I don’t like it at all, Penguin — and I don’t think it’s helpful in these fraught times. But it’s easy for me — I live far away, in a very safe, very Republican suburb in the middle of the American Midwest, and have never seen danger even at a distance, let alone fought in a war. Grom is much more tough-minded, both innately and because of real life experience.

The West Bank Arabs have been attacking their Jewish neighbours without let-up for decades; we get the occasional report when they succeed in killing someone driving down the highway outside one of their villages, for instance, or someone just escapes being killed, for instance. The problem, once again, is that the world coddles the Arabs and protects them from an effective Israeli response to what really is a low grade war. But to root out the troublemakers and their supporters properly would probably leave only 10-25% of the Arab population who were willing to be trustworthy neighbours, I’d guess. And it would have to be done in the teeth of even greater world indignation than we’ve seen in response to the war in Gaza. So Israel continues to mow the lawn, as it were, at the cost of Jewish and loyal non-Jewish Israeli lives.

7 Thanks for your response. I was curious because even though reddit blows chunks, I read the Israel subreddit and viewed this post.

Grom, maybe it isn't the Maccabees fighting Greek influence resulting in the holiday of Hanukah.

Maybe a better analogy is the Sicarii fighting Roman influence resulting in the holiday of Tisha B'Av.
