[Task & Purpose] Minnesota National Guardsmen will wear bright reflective vests so they won’t be confused with law enforcement agencies that wear military-style camouflage.
"Members of the Minnesota National Guard are serving in support of local law enforcement agencies and are not licensed peace officers," said Army Maj. Andrea Tsuchiya, a spokeswoman for the state’s National Guard. "These vests are being used to distinguish our members from those of other agencies, due to similarFederal law enforcement agencies have been increasingly dressing in military-style garb over the years, and that can make it hard for civilians to tell the difference between the police and the military. Photos from Minneapolis show that U.S. Border Patrol and FBI agents have been wearing gear that closely resembles troops’ uniforms.
That appears to be why Minnesota National Guardsmen will wear reflective vests if activated "to help distinguish them from other agencies in similar uniforms," a Jan. 17 post on the Minnesota National Guard’s Facebook page says.
The move is not targeted at any specific agency. Rather, it is meant to make sure that people do not mistake Minnesota National Guardsmen for state or federal agents wearing camouflage uniforms, a state official told Task & Purpose. uniforms being worn."

Actually, the vests will cover up the US ARMY Name Tape on their uniform, making it clear they are not acting as Army troops, just state employees. Hopefully, some Army JAG has a prepared activation order to federalize thenmen masse, and just have them shed the vests in a simple unit formation and march over them as they join the federal forces in any confrontation. A perfect George Wallace photo-op moment might be forthecoming!

[ZERO] BLUF: For decades, the federal government has awarded certain special contracts exclusively to so-called disadvantaged businesses and women-owned small businesses. Until 2023, SBA presumed that racial minorities were "disadvantaged." The resulting discrimination was absolute: according to an analysis conducted between 2020 and 2023, these programs made not a single award to white men.
Everyone within the system knows such fraud is rampant. A 2018 government audit reviewed 25 8(a) recipient firms which together received more than $100 million. Of these, 20 "should have been removed from the . . . program" due to ineligibility.
The Trump administration has taken important steps to address these problems. Late Friday, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced he was ordering a "line by line" investigation of 8(a) contracts. President Biden’s SBA sought to award 15 percent of all federal contracts to disadvantaged firms. Trump SBA administrator Kelly Loeffler has reduced the goal to the law’s actual standard of 5 percent. Her administration has also demanded financial records from 8(a) businesses to weed out fraud.
But the core problem with these programs is not fraud. It is that they systematically discriminate against one group: white men.
Instead of trying to reform 8(a), the Trump administration should abolish it. Under the Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause, the administration would be within its rights to stop all contracting based on race and sex, even if such contracting were justified under the fig leaf of a "disadvantage" essay. The White House could also support Senator Joni Ernst’s "Stop 8(a) Contracting Fraud Act," which would pause 8(a) contracting until a thorough audit is completed, or call on Congress to end the program altogether.
When the administration says, "no DEI," it should mean it. In federal contracting, that’s also what the Constitution requires.
Having worked for a number of Disadvantaged SBA's & 8-A's in the 80's & 90's. It was clear the owners even then played the system. Not 1 of them that I worked for was, actually minority or Female owned and operated. All were run by Older White Males, using a woman as the centerpiece for the cert.

So many grievances with our govt. I tried for a SBA Loan to open a Five Guys. I was lifeguard right next to the original Five Guys and when I heard they were franchising, I wanted in. Had a business plan. Went to the banks to get the loan and was denied.
Probably a coincidence. I had two locations in a major city. A smaller unit and a larger unit with double the square footage. Probably a coincidence, but a Five Guys opened in my larger unit about two years later after my loan application.

Loaded my diesels with Cetane, fired the generator, moved the hay under cover, put propane heaters in the barns, turned off the water and unplugged the hot tub.

We have been hearing Freezing Temps, Ice/Rain for several days now.
A repeat of last weekend, with this time as far south as Savannah GA. predicted with serious issues.
Well it did boost the economy here, with a lot of panic buying.
But! Weather forecast maps now show mainly rain with a slight chance of some late night near freezing temps below Atlanta for us further south.

Connecticut. About a 1/2" last night, possibly 12"-18" Sunday into Monday. A significant storm, but not going to break any records. The extreme cold is the bigger threat.
Maryland and parts south are not used to these storms and don't have the snow removal equipment that states that get a lot of snow have.

Skid-I got the semi-annual maintenance plan from the dealer, along with the 7 year warranty. Like you, the 15 second lag before auto-start made battery power source for satellite TV and wifi-computer mandatory. Great sense of security it provides when you live on a small hilltop and get a 3 ft snowfall on un-plowed private access road.

Panic buying... I worked at a milk bottling plant and was amazed how people would always, always go buy extra milk. If a winter storm knocks your electricity out something perishable like milk should be the last thing you should fill your refrigerator with.

During a press briefing on Tuesday, Trump highlighted the accomplishments of his administration.
“[I] Signed an executive order to bring back mental institutions and insane asylums,” Trump said. “We’re going to have to bring them back. Hate to build those suckers, but you’ve got to get the people off the streets.”
Trump went on to say that while growing up in Queens, New York, there was a place called “Creedmoor.”
Trump shared how he had asked his mom why there were “bars on the windows.” He shared that his mom told him, “people that are very sick are in that building.”
“I’ll never forget — I don’t know if it’s still there, because they got rid of most of them,” Trump added. “The Democrats in New York, they took them down, and the people live on the streets now. That’s why you have a lot of the people in California and other places, they live in the streets.”
In an interview with Daily Caller White House Correspondent Reagan Reese in August 2025, Trump was asked if he would “be open to the government reopening insane asylums for people with serious mental illness.”
Trump responded by pointing out “states like New York and California” that had mental institutions ended up releasing people “into society because they couldn’t afford it.”
“They used to have them, and you never saw people like we had, you know, they used to have them,” Trump said. “And what happened is states like New York and California that had them, New York had a lot of them. [FoxNews] Fermented beverage evidence discovered at Bronze Age cemetery site in Gansu Province
Archaeologists recently uncovered proof of ancient fermented beverages in western China — revealing how people brewed beer-like drinks more than 3,000 years ago.
The research was published in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports in December.
The study centered around the Mogou site in Gansu Province, located in northwestern China near the northeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau.
The site had long been used as a cemetery during the Bronze Age, in the late second millennium B.C. Researchers analyzed 42 vessels from four tombs and found microscopic residue showing they once held fermented liquids.
Experts conducted microfossil analyses and uncovered starch granules, phytoliths and fungi that show the "diverse range" of the diet of ancient Mogou people, per the study's abstract.
The Mogou people brewed the beverages using the "qu method," which involved preparing the fermentation starter with rice and Monascus mold, or red mold. The drinks were crafted from grains such as millet, rice, wheat and barley.
Li Liu, an East Asian Languages and Cultures professor at Stanford University and co-author of the study, said these fermented beverages were "likely similar to unfiltered beer, with a porridge-like consistency."
The drinks also had a low alcohol content and a "mildly sweet-sour flavor profile," Liu told Fox News Digital. "A hint of apples, bananas and chickory"
"They were probably consumed fresh and did not include hops, which are used in brewing modern beer."
"Fermentation would have enhanced preservation, nutritional value and digestibility, allowing them to be consumed beyond strictly ritual contexts."
Liu added that fermented alcoholic beverages had a long history in China. They were used as mortuary offerings and in festive settings for around 10,000 years.
"At the same time, these beverages may also have functioned as everyday food resources, as fermentation would have enhanced preservation, nutritional value and digestibility, allowing them to be consumed beyond strictly ritual contexts," she added.
The most surprising aspect of the study, Liu said, was the evidence that red mold was used in the fermentation process — an unusual type of mold in the Tibetan Plateau region.
"Rice may not have been locally produced in this highland environment, and the growing of Monascus typically requires warm and humid conditions," Liu said.
"Its presence in the western highlands suggests a remarkably long-lasting and far-reaching cultural transmission of brewing knowledge."
She also said the brewing methods stayed largely the same for centuries, suggesting a well-established tradition.
