3 The 20% thing was a curious remark. Is this Trump being a businessman saying we are doing the work and should get paid for it? (the Free Rider problem in economics)

Or is he maneuvering people to his stated position that the Strait is toll-free internation water?

4 The United States should start escorting ships through the Straits in convoys, with air cover. I'm sure several dozen tankers would gladly fork over a substantial fee to be guaranteed safe passage through the area. That also puts the pressure on the US to develop an escort - reviving the demand for a multipurpose frigate that can handle both air and surface threats. Eliminating a few dozen Iranian ports would also help the situation. ARCLIGHT is your friend, use it!

Trump backtracks from proposal to charge 20% toll for securing Strait of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump backtracks from an earlier assertion that Washington would charge a 20% toll for securing the Strait of Hormuz, declaring that the US will instead compensate those costs through investment deals with Gulf countries.

“Based on highly productive conversations with Middle East leadership, I have decided to replace the 20% United States reimbursement fee with trade and investment deals that the various Gulf States will be making into the United States,” Trump writes on Truth Social.

It’s unclear whether Trump’s plan to charge a 20% toll would have ever worked or whether his claim of new investments from Gulf countries will end up being a repackaging of previously pledged investments that have yet to come in in full.

Trump also claims oil is “flowing like never before” out of the Strait of Hormuz, thanks to the US military efforts in the region, adding that a blockade of Iranian ports is now in place.

6 Like I've said before - if Trump wants to prove he controls the Strait simply send a destroyer through without incident. That would demonstrate control.

So half the room is raising their fists, shouting "No Tolls! Freedom of navigation!", and the other half is thinking "We could make some money here".

I see that Zerohedge has labeled this a TACO moment (Trump Always Chickens Out) which only adds to my suspicions that this is yet another Trumpian play.

Poor Donnie! Constantly outwitted by his enemies, yet somehow getting what he actually wanted. Whatever you do, please don't throw him in the briar patch!
