In the future, lemonade may still be called lemonade even if it contains less than seven percent sugar.

The German Food Codex Commission (DLMBK) has overturned the previous regulation requiring lemonades to contain at least seven percent sugar and has relaxed its guidelines for soft drinks. This brings to an end a dispute over the minimum sugar content that has lasted more than five years.

Now, lemonades need only contain “ingredients to achieve a sweet taste (e.g., sugars, sweeteners),” according to an announcement in the Federal Gazette. How much remains to be determined.

Manufacturers Warned: Too Little Sugar in the Lemonade
The trigger for the years-long dispute was the Hamburg-based beverage manufacturer Lemonaid (see image), whose organic lemonade, in the view of food inspectors, was not sweet enough with a sugar content of six percent and therefore should not be sold as “lemonade.”

The Hamburg-Mitte District Office demanded in a 2019 warning notice that the manufacturer either rename its trendy beverage or add more sugar. The company fought back against this.
It was supported in this by the Hamburg Health Authority, which stated even then: “Foods with low sugar content should not be penalized, but should be the norm.” The lemonade continued to be sold throughout the dispute.
