1 Mizrahi Jews are the 2500-year old communities of the Middle East that date back to the the Babylonian Exile following the destruction of the First Temple. There is nothing else they could be in Iran.

The ones in Iran are the small remnant that did not escape before the Mullahs closed the borders to them in 1980 or so. The vast majority of the Persian Jewish community lives in Israel, with smaller populations in Europe and North America — there were a number who made their way to my synagogue in Buffalo, NY in the 1950s after they found Francophone Canada much too cold for their taste. Brilliant, erudite, cultured people, and very Zionist after waiting faithfully for Israel’s resurrection for two millennia, every year of which — and for five centuries before that — they ended the Passover Seder meal by saying, “Next year in Jerusalem!”

The statement is a strong CYA so they won’t be punished again by the authorities for supporting “the Zionist entity” even a little. They don’t believe at all what they’re quoted as saying.
