I didn't realize I was supporting poss two other families.

Where is that income tax deduction?
Can I setup deductible college funds for them?
Are all of the family dependents or just the children?
What about medical expenses, HSAs for when they get shot?

10 The 37% number is stunning, but without knowing what this article calls "welfare" needs description, explanation. Is SS called welfare? Is VA disability called welfare? How broad is that BRUSH?

My old political economy professor, Thomas Schelling (1979) always* started and ended a lecture with the question Who Pays?

*mostly always. He was great. The tough bastard made it to 95 yo. I was blessed to hear him, learn from him. He and Edward Purcell were my most enlightening professors. I miss them.

12 @9 it depends where they live. The cost of living in some states is way too high to afford on low paying service jobs (food stores, gas stations, big box stores) and the like.

This is the second time in a fortnight the name Thomas Schelling has popped up on my radar. The previous instance was a Great Courses lecture on Game Theory where his name came up as the author of "The Strategy of Conflict". Apparently, the Universe is reminding me that I need to read it.
