I agree the owners data needs to be erased.
If the Government tracks and keeps records of ownership, it but one reason, and that is future confiscation and population control.

How do we know if they really will erase the data, and did not just back it up to 2x 1TB thumb drives, for later use?

8 Even if the federal registry is destroyed, many states have their own registry. Using CT as an example: any handgun purchase has a state form (DP-3) that goes to the police department the purchaser lives in. Also the CT State police require any purchase of a firearm to be approved by the CT version of NICS. The CT State Police are known to keep a database of what person owns what guns, although it is often inaccurate.
