The vessel’s staff worked around the clock to get the destroyer ready after it was scrambled into action from dry dock earlier last month. The ship was covered in scaffolding, without any missiles and midway through a planned maintenance, when RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus was struck by a drone.
Sir Keir Starmer had faced fierce criticism over the sluggish deployment of HMS Dragon to protect the major British base as the conflict in Iran rages on.
But the destroyer – which only arrived weeks after the fighting kicked off – is now heading away from the front line.
The Ministry of Defence has revealed that the ship has sailed to a safe berth to undergo repairs, according to the MailOnline. The stop will reportedly include attending to what officials described as “a minor technical issue with onboard water systems”, the outlet reports.
The MoD said that the vessel would retain a “very high level of readiness” and would be “able to sail at short notice if required”.
It is currently unclear where exactly HMS Dragon is or what port it is going into for security reasons. However, the UK has naval bases on Cyprus and Gibraltar in the region.
Defence insiders insisted there’s no crisis onboard, saying the crew have had full access to food and water throughout as it temporarily withdraws. They also stressed the stop-off had been planned in advance at “roughly this stage” of the deployment.
HMS Dragon took a week to get to sea, a further three days to leave British waters, four days to call in Gibraltar and six to span the Mediterranean. Families gathered on the dockside as the Type 45 Destroyer left Portsmouth Harbour on March 10. The warship finally arrived in Cyprus in the last week of March.
The air defence destroyer joined US and French warships to defend the eastern Mediterranean from Iranian missiles and drones.
The Sun reported at the time that five out of six of the Royal Navy’s £1billion destroyers were in port being repaired while the RAF base in Cyprus came under attack.
The MoD had told MPs that the HMS Dragon was “operational” which means it should have been ready to sail in no more than 72 hours. But her sailing came a week after Sir Keir Starmer ordered her to sea – and ten days after the strike on the Cypriot base.
The sluggish response saw the ship engulfed in a row over Britain’s readiness to respond to a crisis – and the seemingly small size of the Royal Navy.
The latest setback comes amid growing embarrassment, with US President Donald Trump and his War Secretary Pete Hegseth taking repeated swipes at the Royal Navy. Trump has slammed Sir Keir’s wavering response to the conflict more than once in the past month.
A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said of the latest development: “HMS Dragon is undertaking a routine logistics stop and a short maintenance period in the Eastern Mediterranean allowing the ship to take onboard provisions, optimise systems and conduct maintenance.
“HMS Dragon will remain at a very high level of readiness during the period, able to sail at short notice if required.
“The UK continues to maintain a robust and layered defensive presence in the Eastern Mediterranean working in coordination with allies.
“This includes Typhoon and F-35 jets, Wildcat and Merlin helicopters and advanced counter-drone and air defence systems.”
The Royal Navy’s Type 45 destroyers, like HMS Dragon, have Britain’s best air defence missiles. Their radars can track 1,000 objects from 250 miles away and blast up to eight missiles simultaneously to intercept targets.
Two additional Merlin Crowsnest helicopters have also arrived in Cyprus.
UK Typhoons and F-35 jets, supported by Voyager refuelling and Royal Navy Merlin and Wildcat helicopters have also continued their defensive missions across the region.

Evap issues are pretty common , especially in warmer water. Usually, ships just top off their tanks in port and resume operations. It’s not like they are operating in the middle of the Atlantic. Evaporator issues are a bigger issue for steam ships where water generation is split between boiler water and potable.

@3 Probably not. Partly because spending an extended time in a prison cell. Partly what has happened so far doesn't really prevent the USS Ford or HMS Dragon from operating if they really had to.
USS Ford is a new ship, so defects aren't unexpected. HMS Dragon was in the middle of maintenace when it was rushed back into service so it's possible a fix was rushed or not done.

[NextGov] This latest cyber assessment released during the war with Iran mirrors similar cyber intrusions made by an Iran-aligned group that targeted Pennsylvania water systems in late 2023.
Iran-aligned hackers have exploited and disrupted operational technology control systems embedded in multiple U.S. critical infrastructure sectors, targeting equipment manufactured by Rockwell Automation, according to an advisory issued Tuesday.
The hackers have set their sights on the company’s Allen-Bradley line of programmable logic controllers, or PLCs, which are digital computers that interface with operational equipment to monitor and automate industrial processes like water treatment, power generation and manufacturing.
The cyber intrusions have, in some cases, resulted in operational disruption and financial loss, according to the assessment signed by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, FBI, NSA, EPA, the Department of Energy and U.S. Cyber Command’s Cyber National Mission Force.
The disruptions occurred by manipulating data on human-machine interfaces and on supervisory control and data acquisition, or SCADA, displays, as well as harmful interactions with project files, it adds.
The advisory is the latest signal indicating that Iran-aligned hacker groups have successfully targeted and impeded U.S. systems amid the ongoing U.S.-Israel war against Iran that broke out Feb. 28.

Possibly this is one of those things that’s run into the Justice Department personnel shortage. Because getting information on that lot is apparently easy enough — Andy Ngo has been building a large data base for years, among others, and there’ll be even more data in local police files that the local prosecutors refused to reference.
But it seems to me that despite all their funding, organization, and noise, they are no longer moving public opinion. Everyone who is going to believe their claims already does, and the rest of us are no longer fooled. Trump declared the truce was subject to the Strait of Hormuz being reopened. However,

"This will be a double-sided CEASEFIRE! The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East," Trump wrote.
"We received a 10-point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate."
"Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two-week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated," he added.
"On behalf of the United States of America, as President, and also representing the Countries of the Middle East, it is an Honor to have this long-term problem close to resolution," Trump said.
The announcement marked the fourth time Trump has pushed back his threat to bomb Iran’s energy and civilian infrastructure sites if it does not agree to his demands. He first gave Tehran 48 hours to reopen the Strait of Hormuz on March 21 and has since pushed back that deadline by five days, 10 days and one day respectively, with the latest postponement following his warning that "a whole civilization will die tonight" if Iran did not agree to his demands by a Tuesday, 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time deadline he set.
After Trump spoke, a US official confirmed the American military halted all offensive operations against Iran, though said defensive measures and operations remain in effect. Signaling Iranian attacks would continue, an American defense official quoted by Axios said the US expected some time to pass before the ceasefire order was relayed to the lower ranks of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
IRAN, US AND ISRAEL ALL CLAIM VICTORY
In its official response to Trump, Iran said it would stop launching attacks if strikes against it stop, according to a statement on behalf of the Iranian Supreme National Security Council issued by Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.
"For a period of two weeks, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible via coordination with Iran’s Armed Forces and with due consideration of technical limitations," the statement added.
Separately, Iranian state media quoted the Supreme National Security Council confirming that talks with the US will begin Friday in the Pak capital of Islamabad, adding that the negotiations do not mean an end to the war.
Claiming victory, Iran said the talks, which may last up to 15 days and can be extended by agreement, aim to finalize details of its 10-point proposal, which calls for "continued Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz, acceptance of enrichment, lifting of all primary and secondary sanctions."
Other key demands in the 10-point blueprint, offered through mediators in Pakistain, include US military withdrawal from the Middle East, an end to attacks on Iran and its allies, the release of frozen Iranian assets and a UN Security Council resolution making any deal binding.
These terms would represent an extraordinary step down by the US after 47 years of hostilities with Iran, starting from the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
"It is to be noted that the adoption of such a resolution shall render all these agreements binding under international law and shall constitute a significant diplomatic victory for the Iranian nation," the Supreme National Security Council said.
That statement appeared to irk Trump, who falsely claimed on social media it was "made up" by a site in Nigeria and berated CNN ...formerly the Cable News Network, now who know what it might stand for... for reporting on it, as the White House quickly tried to frame the two-week ceasefire as a win.
"This is a victory for the United States that President Trump and our incredible military made happen," Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement to The Times of Israel.
"From the very beginning of Operation Epic Fury, President Trump estimated this would be a 4-6 week operation," she said. "Thanks to the unbelievable capabilities of our warriors, we have achieved and exceeded our core military objectives in 38 days."
"The success of our military created maximum leverage, allowing President Trump and the team to engage in tough negotiations that have now created an opening for a diplomatic solution and long-term peace," Leavitt added.
"Additionally, President Trump got the Strait of Hormuz reopened," she said.
The channel was open before the war started, though, and Iran now says safe passage must be coordinated with its forces.
Trump himself later echoed Leavitt, telling AFP in a telephone interview that the United States won a "total and complete victory. 100 percent. No question about it."
He added that Iran’s uranium "will be perfectly taken care of, or I wouldn’t have settled," without elaborating.
Several hours after Trump’s initial announcement, Netanyahu’s office issued a statement welcoming the ceasefire, while stressing that it does not cover Lebanon despite Pak mediators’ claims to the contrary.
"Israel supports President Trump’s decision to suspend strikes against Iran for two weeks, subject to Iran immediately opening the straits and stopping all attacks on the US, Israel and countries in the region," the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement only released in English.
"Israel also supports the US effort to ensure that Iran no longer poses a nuclear, missile and terror threat to America, Israel, Iran’s Arab neighbors and the world," the statement continued.
"The United States has told Israel that it is committed to achieving these goals, shared by the US, Israel and Israel’s regional allies, in the upcoming negotiations."
"The two-week ceasefire does not include Lebanon," the premier’s office added.
The response from Netanyahu followed a statement sent by a senior Israeli official to news hounds saying the US "coordinated in advance" with Israel and insisting that Iran "is opening the Strait of Hormuz without getting any of its demands it advance, such as a commitment for a final end to the war, reparations, the removal of heavy sanctions against it and more."
The official added that the Trump administration told Israel that during the coming negotiations hosted by Pakistain, the US will stick to its guns in demanding Iran remove all nuclear material from the country, halt uranium enrichment, "remove the ballistic missile threat and more."
A regional official, however, said the two-week ceasefire allows both Iran and Oman to charge fees on ships transiting through the Strait of Hormuz, with the Islamic Theocratic Republic to use the money for reconstruction. The strait, which is in the territorial waters of both Oman and Iran, is considered an international waterway and tolls have never been paid before to pass through it. What amount of negotiation is worthwhile with people like that? They only 'understand' strength.
The only negotiation should be along the lines of, 'You wanna talk, throw down your weapons and come out with your hands up and maybe we won't kill all of you.'

Keep in mind it is rare for Trump to be obvious and this seems to be a bit too obvious.
Based on what is public knowledge, the aviators did a hell of a job on Iran, but short of lots of boots on the ground there does not seem a way to effect a regime change. I don't think the American public will tolerate the time and number of troops on the ground to effect regime change. Attempting to do so could cost the Republicans in this year's mid term and the 2028 Presidential election.
I would love to see the IRGC completely destroyed and the remaining leadership hung by their necks, but not at the cost of losing elections in 2026 & 2028.

Yada, yada, yada. Our side has been pushing it 24hrs a day for over a month. That is an operational tempo hard on personal and machines to sustain. Those aircraft have a maintenance hours to flying hours ratio that needs a lot of work and its at literally a world away from supply sources. The initial military priorities have been done in rendering the Iranian forces non-operational. Time to reconstitute what we have in theater to prep for phase 2 when the Iranians think they can get away with breaking it like Hamas.

But patience, grasshopper! As St. Yogi said, to win before you fight is the acme of skill.
