Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani revealed Monday he will ditch his rent-stabilized Queens apartment and move to Gracie Mansion with his wife, Rama Duwaji, after his inauguration.
The Democratic socialist, who has been living in a $2,300 one-bedroom pad in Astoria, said the decision was ultimately down to his family’s safety.
"My wife Rama and I have made the decision to move into Gracie Mansion in January," he said in a statement.
"This decision came down to our family’s safety and the importance of dedicating all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for."
Mamdani, whose campaign leaned heavily on rent freezes for New Yorkers, has faced widespread criticism for living in his dirt-cheap digs for years — despite his six-figure salary as a Queens assemblyman.

Went to the link and, as famous as it is, it was the first time I've ever seen a picture of Gracie Mansion. I always imagined it would be a lot bigger and more...gracious.
I always imagined the mayor looking like the Monopoly guy in a tuxedo with a monocle and top hat, greeting people arriving at the mansion for some glittering ball all wearing tuxedos, furs, gowns and jewelry. Don't think any of that will be happening with the Mamdanis living there. whimper Maybe I've watched too many 1930s movies. Does this mean that we're a society in decline?

We lived across the park- Carl Schurz Park- from Gracie Mansion, on Gracie Square for a while back in the day. It is a modest building indeed, painted a sort of mustard yellow at the time. Suitable for a mayor of modest means, and Mr Mamdani has much to be modest about. Perhaps he will be like Mr De Blasio, and just not wake up, get up, or go to work. Perhaps.
