UK charities urge government to welcome Gazans with family ties in Britain
[IsraelTimes] Tens of thousands of Gazans who manage to leave the Strip linger in limbo, with very few countries – none in the Arab world – willing to take them in as refugees

London police: Attackers of UK-based dissident Iranian journalist fled the country
[IsraelTimes] Presenter on news channel that had gotten ’state-backed threats from Iran’ was stabbed near his home; Tehran denies connection

British counterterrorism police investigating the stabbing of a journalist who works for a TV channel critical of the Iranian government said on Tuesday that three suspects had fled the country within hours of the attack.

Pouria Zeraati, a presenter at London-based Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
International, was stabbed in the leg Friday afternoon outside his home in London. Police said Zeraati, who has been released from a hospital, was attacked by two men who fled in a car driven by a third man.

"We have established that after abandoning the vehicle, the suspects traveled to Heathrow Airport and have left the UK,’’ Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command, said in a statement late Tuesday. "We are now working with international partners to establish further details.’’

Police said that while the motivation for the attack is still unclear, Zeraati’s occupation, together with recent threats to UK-based Iranian journalists, triggered a counterterrorism investigation. Iran International, a satellite news channel that broadcasts in Farsi, has previously received threats due to its coverage of Iran.

Mehdi Hosseini Matin, Iran’s charge d’affaires in the UK, has said "we deny any link" to the incident.

The police says it has disrupted "a number" of plots to kill or kidnap people in the UK who were seen as enemies of the Iranian government. Officers are working with intelligence agencies to disrupt future plots and provide protection for the targeted organizations and individuals, police said.

The UK government in 2023 unveiled a tougher sanctions regime against Iran over alleged human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
violations and hostile actions against its opponents on UK soil.

Early last year, Iran International temporarily shut down its operations in London and moved to studios in Washington, DC, after what it described as an escalation of "state-backed threats from Iran," which has declared it a terrorist organization. The station resumed operations at a new location in London last September.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Three days off have been announced in Dagestan and Chechnya on the occasion of Eid al-Adha
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[KavkazUzel] In connection with the Eid al-Fitr holiday, days from April 10 to 12 were declared non-working in Dagestan, and from April 9 to 11 in Chechnya.

As the "Caucasian Knot" wrote, in 2024 the fasting month of Ramadan began in most of the republics of the North Caucasus on March 11, in Dagestan the first day of Ramadan was declared on March 12.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim lunar calendar, a month of fasting, spiritual and moral purification, as well as strengthening faith and will.
…not to mention the occasional spot of religiously sanctioned murder… so we won’t mention it.
During Ramadan, Muslims must abstain from food and drink during daylight hours. The month of fasting ends with the holiday of breaking the fast of Eid al-Fitr.

The days from April 10 to 12 in Dagestan will be non-working due to the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, the administration of the head and government of the republic announced on April 2 in its telegram channel.

“Taking into account Saturday and Sunday [April 13 and 14], Dagestanis will rest for five days in a row. This decision was announced today by the head of the region, Sergei Melikov,” the publication says.

In Chechnya, April 9, 10 and 11 have been declared holiday non-working days; a decree on this was signed by the acting. O. the head of the republic, Muslim Khuchiev, reported on the evening of April 2, the Grozny-inform news agency.

“In connection with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr (Eid al-Fitr) on the territory of the Chechen Republic and on the basis of an appeal from the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Chechen Republic […] to declare April 9, 10 and 11, 2024 non-working (holiday) days on the territory of the Chechen Republic” - the agency quoted from the decree.

Investigation into the disappearance of Seda Suleymanova has begun
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[KavkazUzel] The investigator, in responses to the authors of appeals demanding to investigate the disappearance of a native of Chechnya, Seda Suleymanova, informed about the beginning of a criminal investigation, reported the CK SOS Crisis Group.

As the "Caucasian Knot" wrote, on August 23, 2023, security forces came to 26-year-old Seda Suleymanova and her fiance, who fled from Chechnya to St. Petersburg, and detained them, explaining that the girl was suspected of stealing jewelry. Later, the young man was released, and the girl was sent to Grozny, where she was handed over to relatives. The lawyers were not allowed to meet with the client, citing her refusal of their services. Seda’s friend Lena Patyaeva held protests in February and March, reminding that nothing has been known about Suleymanova’s fate for more than six months.

On March 20, human rights activists reported that none of the federal departments, to which numerous statements were sent about the fate of Seda Suleymanova, who was taken by her relatives to Chechnya, checked the information about the possible murder of the girl. More than 2 thousand appeals were forwarded to the Chechen security forces, who organized the detention of Seda in St. Petersburg.

Seda Suleymanova turned to human rights activists back in October 2022 because she was afraid that her family might commit an “honor killing,” since her relatives from Grozny were not satisfied with her lack of religiosity. In January 2023, Seda found a job and decided to stay in St. Petersburg. In February of the same year, her relatives already tried to kidnap her, but she managed to escape. After this, Seda changed her job and residence address, but remained in St. Petersburg, where she was detained in August. The prosecutor's office, in response to a statement by human rights activists, stated in February that the girl voluntarily left for Chechnya, although two sources in Chechnya voiced the version that Suleymanova was killed by relatives.

The Investigative Committee opened a criminal case in connection with the disappearance of Seda Suleymanova, the SOS Crisis Group reported today.

According to human rights activists, applicants who sent requests through a special form began to receive responses from the Investigative Committee about the initiation of a criminal case into the “unknown disappearance” of Seda. Before this, they only received replies from the prosecutor’s office, which stated that the applicant did not have the right to request such information or that the appeal had been transferred to the Investigative Committee.

“The progress and results of the investigation of the criminal case have been taken under control by the Investigation Department,” the Investigative Committee stated in its responses.

Human rights activists expressed gratitude to everyone who is demanding an investigation into what happened to Seda Suleymanova. “Any progress that occurs in this matter is thanks to you,” says the Telegram channel of the Crisis Group*.

“Everything you did - signed appeals, spread information about  Seda’s disappearance  - is not meaningless. It brings results. We must not give up, we have no right to give up. For the sake of  Seda  and other girls and women suffering from domestic violence, sent to hands to the aggressors with the consent of the state,” the human rights project “Marem” commented on the message on its Telegram channel.

On October 20, 2023, Suleymanova’s fiance Stanislav Kudryavtsev announced that he had converted to Islam and asked to meet with her, but did not receive a response from the girl’s relatives. Kudryavtsev witnessed Seda’s detention: security forces detained him outside the apartment and placed him in front of the peephole so that the girl would open the apartment door. “When Seda opened the door, they immediately burst in. She fell to the floor, was shaking in shock, crying, saying that they would kill her at home. She called it an “honor killing,” he told human rights activists.

Israeli Ambassador Halperin: Three Russians remain hostage from Hamas
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] Three Russians, who also have Israeli citizenship, are still being held hostage by the Palestinian Hamas movement, Israeli Ambassador to Russia Simone Halperin told reporters on April 3.
Russia does not seem very exercised by this situation, given that they’ve chosen to openly side with Hamas against the Joooooos….
“Three people with dual citizenship, including Russian,” Izvestia quoted her as saying.

Halperin reported that Hamas held 134 people hostage, of whom the Israeli authorities declared 36 dead. There are no Russians on the list of dead, she clarified.

The New York Times reported in March that Hamas had rejected a deal proposed by Washington to exchange hostages for Palestinians held in Israeli prisons. According to the publication, they planned to release hundreds of Palestinians in exchange for 40 hostages.

Hamas took hostages in an unprecedented attack on Israeli border areas beginning on October 7, 2023. In response, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) began military operations in the Gaza Strip. Since then, there have been hostage exchanges, including the release of two Russian women by the Palestinians in November.

In January 2024, the Hamas leadership announced that the deputy head of the organization's Politburo, Saleh al-Arouri, was killed in an explosion at the movement's office in Libya. In this regard, the movement announced that it was refusing any negotiations with Israel, including on a truce or exchange of hostages.

Leonel Moreno is under investigation for gun charges
Leonel Moreno, the "migrant influencer" who mocked America on social media and encouraged migrants colonists to squat in the homes of US citizens, is facing potential federal firearms charges, The Post has exclusively learned.

Internal federal documents reviewed by The Post show the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has been in contact with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) regarding Moreno, and is mulling charges against him.

The exact charges are not known, but sources said they would likely be brought under a section of the Gun Control Act which prohibits those on parole from possessing, shipping, transporting or receiving firearms or ammunition.

Moreno crossed into the US illegally in 2022 but was allowed to stay in the country on a Biden administration, the same old faces in slightly different places, the same old ideas, the same old graft

Outspoken political leader Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman on Thursday was elected as a new emir of Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
Pakistain for the next five years.

JI Central Information Secretary Qaisar Sharif said that over 45,000 members of the party cast their votes to elect the new emir during the recent intra-party elections.

"Naeem received over 80% of the votes and become the sixth emir of the party," he added.

He would remain the party's chief till 2029, the party’s information secretary added.

As per the party’s constitution, elections are held regularly at all levels in the JI, Sharif said, adding, "JI does not belong to any individual or a [certain] family but to every member and worker".

Over 45,000 members of the JI countrywide elected the new emir via secret balloting, he added.

The JI information secretary said that the JI Majlis-e-Shura, however, had proposed three names for the post of the party chief to the party members.

JI incumbent Emir Sirajul Haq

is completing his second term as the party’s head on April 8 (Monday), he added.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, former president Arif Alvi and other politicians of the country congratulated Naeem on his election as the JI chief.

Palestinians officially relaunch bid to become United Nations member state, US ‘signals opposition’
[IsraelTimes] Palestine Liberation Organization seeks recognition as state from world body, which granted it observer status in 2012, but vote on application can be vetoed by US.
I’m confused. They keep telling us the Palestinian Authority government is nothing like the PLO, even though PA President Mahmoud Abbas is the current head of Fatah, the largest group in the PLO.
The Paleostine Liberation Organization has officially revived its application to become a full member state in the United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
, according to a letter from its UN envoy dated Tuesday.

The PLO, which has had observer status at the world body since 2012, has lobbied for years to gain full membership, which would amount to recognition of Paleostinian statehood.

In a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres
...Portuguese politician and diplomat, ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations. Previously, he was the UN High Commissioner for Refugees between 2005 and 2015. He was the Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002 and was the Secretary-General of the Socialist Party from 1992 to 2002. He served as President of the Socialist International from 1999 to 2005. In both a 2012 and 2014 poll, the Portuguese public ranked him as the best Prime Minister of the previous 30 years...
, the Paleostinian UN envoy, Riyad Mansour, requested "upon instructions of the Paleostinian leadership" that an application dating back to 2011 be reconsidered this month by the Security Council.

The letter has been transmitted to the council, according to the documents seen by the AFP news agency.

Mansour has repeatedly said in recent months that in the face of Israel’s military offensive in the Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamas with about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
Strip in response to the devastating October 7 onslaught by Hamas
...a regional Iranian catspaw,...
, UN membership was a priority for the PA.

A council committee of 15 members first assesses an application to see if it satisfies the requirements for UN membership. The application can then either be shelved or put forward for a formal vote in the Security Council. Approval requires at least nine votes in favor and no vetoes by the US, Russia, China, La Belle France, or Britannia.

If the council approves the membership request, it then moves to the General Assembly for approval. A membership request needs a two-thirds majority to be approved by the assembly. A country cannot join the United Nations unless both the Security Council and General Assembly approve.

The 2011 application, launched by Paleostinian Authority President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
...aka Abu Mazen, a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial. While no Yasser Arafat, he has his own brand of evil, just a little more lowercase....
, never came before the Security Council for a vote, and the General Assembly voted to grant the PA observer status in November 2012.

The UN Security Council committee assessed the application for several weeks to see if it satisfied the requirements for UN membership. However,
some people cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go...
the committee was unable to reach a unanimous position and the Security Council never formally voted on a resolution on Paleostinian membership.

Diplomats said the Paleostinians lacked the minimum nine votes needed to adopt a resolution. Even if they had won enough support, the United States had said it would veto the move.

Observers believe the current Paleostinian push for membership is unlikely to reach the assembly as the United States, Israel’s closest ally, could use its Security Council veto power to derail the recommendation.

The League of Arab States, the Organization of the Islamic Conference
OIC is an international organisation with a permanent delegation to the UN, with 57 member states. It represents all countries with substantial Moslem populations (as opposed to the Arab League, which excludes members not of the Master Race) except those which member countries block from joining. These include India, which has more Mohammedans than does Pakistain, whose membership is vetoed by Pakistain...
, and the Non-Aligned Movement sent a letter to Guterres on Tuesday, also seen by AFP, supporting the bid by the PA.

"We wish to bring to your attention that, as of this date, 140 Member States have recognized the state of Paleostine," said the joint letter, which included a list of those countries.

Little progress has been made in achieving Paleostinian statehood since the signing of the Oslo Accords between Israel and the PA in the early 1990s. Among the obstacles are persistent Paleostinian terrorism and incitement against the Jewish state, along with expanding Israeli settlements.

The PA exercises limited self-rule in the West Bank and is Israel’s partner in the Oslo Accords. Hamas in 2007 ousted the Paleostinian Authority from power in the Gaza Strip.

US signals opposition to renewed Palestinian bid for statehood status at UN

[IsraelTimes] State Department says Palestinian state should be established ‘through direct negotiations… not at the United Nations,’ as PLO envoy seeks vote later this month.

#3  Minister says U.S. must back Israel if seeks presence in Mideast

Amid escalating tensions with the Biden administration, Israel's Energy Minister, Eli Cohen, who until recently served as the Foreign Minister said on Wednesday that if the U.S. does not provide unequivocal support to Israel, "it has no role in the Middle East."

Cohen said Israel is America's ally and the sole democracy in the region, sharing the same values. "Let me tell you who is observing the ongoing conflict: the Saudis, the Emiratis, and the Bahrainis. They say that if the U.S. doesn't back Israel fully against those who threaten us and Iran's proxies, it certainly won't back them either."

#7  #6 I don't think that's the core problem.

If Western elites were as ruthless and greedy as claimed they'd just use the West's power to coerce the payment of petrodollar protection money from the Arab world.

This would be amoral and corrupt and undesirable but at least the Western populace would be kept safe by deterrence.

The Western leadership class seems to suffer from a from of collective suicidal masochism, which is inexplicable to me.

IDF begins calling up Haredi yeshiva students after exemptions expire
Everyone pulls their weight.
[IsraelTimes] The army has begun calling up ultra-Orthodox yeshiva students this week following the expiration of a legally dubious temporary regulation instructing conscription authorities not to draft Haredim.

At least some yeshiva students who had previously been issued deferments from service were sent an order, known in Hebrew as a Tzav Rishon, to report for a pre-draft assessment, according to Hebrew news site Walla. The students in question had previously received the same order in question before being given their deferrals.

Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara on Sunday told the legal advisers of both the defense and education ministries that the process of drafting members of the ultra-Orthodox community into the army must begin the next day.

"Beginning April 1, 2024, there will be no source of authority for a blanket exemption from military conscription for yeshiva students, and the defense establishment must act to draft them into military service in accordance with the law," wrote Baharav-Miara, in a letter first published by Channel 13 news.

Per the State Attorney’s Office, there are currently some 63,000 enrolled yeshiva students who are legally subject to the draft, but it seems unlikely that military police will begin actively enforcing its conscription orders through arrests.

WCK round-up: aid groups complain about IDF but won’t leave; WCK suspends operations, sends aid ships back to Cyprus
Groups accuse Israel of ‘systematic’ attacks on aid workers, but won’t leave Gaza
How can we miss you if you never leave?
[IsraelTimes] Humanitarian NGOs say conditions have become impossible for them, with soldiers disregarding a mechanism in place to allow relief efforts to operate safely

Aid groups said on Wednesday that the international community must treat the Israeli strike that killed seven humanitarian workers in Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
as a watershed moment, accusing Israel of "systematic" attacks on civilians and NGOs working there.

Charities told AFP they had no immediate plans to pull out of Gaza after an Israeli air strike killed seven staff members of the US-based food charity World Central Kitchen late Monday. But they said conditions were becoming increasingly impossible, pointing to serious problems with a coordination system that is designed to keep aid workers safe from military activity aimed at rooting out armed members of Hamas
...one of the armed feet of the Moslem Brüderbund millipede,...
and other terror groups.

The United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
says the bloodiest-ever Gaza war had left nearly 200 aid workers dead even before the Monday night attack, including more than 175 members of the UN’s staff.
How many of the dead were also on the payroll of Hamas or another jihadi group?
The WCK stressed that its staff had come under attack "despite coordinating movements" with the IDF and traveling in a de-conflicted zone in two armored cars branded with the WCK logo and another vehicle.

Israel described the deadly strike as unintentional and apologized for the deadly strike, while vowing to probe the incident, at a time of an outpouring of anger from governments around the world.

But the UN and others say the way Israel has conducted the war puts relief providers and other civilians at grave risk.

"Israel has now killed more aid workers in Gaza than all other armies, militias, and holy warriors in all other wars combined," said Jan Egeland who heads the Norwegian Refugee Council.

"I deeply hope that this terrible attack will act as some kind of watershed moment, and lead to a change in approach," he said, reiterating calls for a sustained ceasefire.

Bushra Khalidi, Oxfam’s policy adviser for the Paleostinian territories, said staff have been "terrified" and tried to minimize their movements.

"There’s been a deliberate and systematic assault on humanitarian aid efforts, including humanitarian aid workers," she said. "We’ve seen a systematic disregard for the de-confliction system."

’DEEP CRISIS’
Benjamin Gaudin, who leads the Middle East operations of Premiere Urgence Internationale, a La Belle France-based NGO, said his organization had no immediate plans to pull out, even though it was "very difficult" to continue to work in Gaza.

"This attack is catastrophic, not only for the World Central Kitchen, but also for the entire humanitarian community," said Gaudin.

Like other relief groups, Gaudin’s NGO has been seeking to closely coordinate their movements with Israel through a special "platform," but pointed to communications problems.

"So far it hasn’t guaranteed the safety of the organizations, because many incidents have occurred, despite this system being put in place," he said.

Egeland said the notification and coordination system with the IDF was "in deep crisis" and had to be rebooted.

The deadly attack "either shows that Israel has no control over its forces — that indiscriminately attack in Gaza — or that it has never communicated with its armed operations the notifications that it had promised to communicate," he said. "Both would be unforgivable."

Camilla Dogliotti of Handicap International, whose office in Gaza City was destroyed in a bombing strike in late January, said "the level of risk is very high in some southern and central areas of Gaza and unacceptable in all other areas."

"This new attack is first and foremost the consequence of Israel’s continued disrespect of international humanitarian law and of the required protection of civilians, including aid workers, during conflict," she charged.

’UNPRECEDENTED DANGER’
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that the military had "unintentionally" killed the aid workers, calling it a "tragic case" that would be investigated "right to the end."

IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi apologized for the incident on Tuesday: "It was a mistake that followed a misidentification, at night, during a war, in very complex conditions. It shouldn’t have happened," Halevi clarified, adding that there was no "intention of harming WCK aid workers."

Since October 7, World Central Kitchen has served millions of meals in Israel and Gaza
[IsraelTimes] Non-political aid agency, founded in 2010, provided over 500,000 meals to displaced, vulnerable Israelis in wake of Hamas attack, has been working for months to get food into Strip. World Central Kitchen (WCK), the food charity founded by celebrity chef José Andrés, called a halt to its work in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday after an Israeli airstrike killed seven of its workers, mostly foreigners, the previous night. The group said it will make decisions about longer-term plans in the region soon.

IDF chief apologizes as details emerge of strike that picked off Gaza aid cars one by one
[IsraelTimes] Halevi: Deaths of 7 WCK staffers ‘a mistake that followed a misidentification, at night, in very complex war conditions’; report claims ‘each commander makes his own rules’ in Gaza.

IDF says UN peacekeepers in Lebanon were hit by Hezbollah roadside bomb
[IsraelTimes] Military had already denied claims it carried out March 30 strike in Rmeish, in which four UNTSO members were maimed

peacekeepers maimed in a blast in southern Leb
...an Iranian satrapy currently ruled by Hassan Nasrallah situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozen flavors of Christians, plus Armenians, Georgians, and who knows what else? It is the home of the original Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
’s Rmeish on Saturday that Lebanese officials blamed on Israel were hit by a Hezbollah roadside kaboom, the Israeli military said Wednesday.

Shortly after the March 30 incident, the Israel Defense Forces denied carrying out any strikes in the Rmeish area. Hezbollah-linked media and security sources speaking to Rooters had claimed that the IDF carried out a dronezap on a vehicle with four UN employees.

The IDF’s Arabic-language front man, Lt. Col. Avichay Adraee, said Wednesday in a post on X that according to the latest information available to the military, the UN peacekeepers were maimed by "an bomb that had been planted by Hezbollah in the area."

According to the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), the three military observers — from Australia, Chile, and Norway — and a Lebanese translator were carrying out a foot patrol and were not in a vehicle as the initial reports suggested.

UNTSO said they were maimed after a "shell went kaboom! near their location."

An ongoing Lebanese army investigation determined that a landmine was the cause of the blast, a judicial official said Wednesday,

"Preliminary results of a Lebanese army investigation have found that the observers were maimed by a landmine," the Lebanese official told AFP, requesting anonymity as they were not authorized to speak to the media.

The ongoing investigation by the Lebanese army and peacekeepers from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) had yet to determine who planted the mine, the official added, noting three mines were in the area, "one of which went kaboom!."

The observers from UNTSO, which supports UNIFIL, had been on a foot patrol along the so-called Blue Line — the UN-demarcated border between Lebanon and Israel, the peacekeepers said.
