Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief April 30, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • TAJIKISTAN BORDER SECURITY COMMANDER KILLED IN SHOOTOUT ON BORDER – Multiple news outlets report a clash between Tajikistan’s border security forces and a well-armed gang of Afghan drug smugglers took place on Thursday night in the Shugnan District of Gorno Badakhshan. 3 of the criminals were arrested at the scene and Tajik soldiers recovered weapons, night vision devices, $10,000 dollars, and 45 kilograms of heroin. The Tajik Commander who was reputedly killed is said to be Komron Rajabzoda, who is listed as the Chief of the State Committee for National Security in Khorog (capital of Gorno Badakhshan). However, this information has not been confirmed by official sources.

  • TALIBAN ARRESTS PANJSHIRI RELIGIOUS FIGURE IN PANJSHIR – According to local eyewitnesses, Maulvi Yahya Annabi has been arrested by the Taliban and taken to an undisclosed location. While it was not clear what charges he faces, he has long been a critic of the Taliban regime and has advocated for greater ethnic representation in the de facto regime. Annabi was reportedly escorted from a meeting of mullahs and muftis by Taliban security personnel.

  • AFGHAN WOMEN PROTEST INTELLIGENTLY IN KABUL BEFORE THE UN MEETING IN DOHA – In a clear sign that Afghan women’s rights activists have adapted their protest strategies, a small group of women activists took to the streets on Sunday in Kabul to urge the international community from recognizing the Taliban regime. The march was precisely timed and was completed in approximately ten minutes. The group dispersed rapidly after performing their march and Taliban security forces did not have enough time to deploy units to break up the march. As previous marches have often turned violent and some resulted in arrests, opposition groups have recalibrated their planning to minimize the threat of beatings/arrests.

  • OUTRAGE OVER MURDERED WOMAN IN GHOR – A young expecting mother (Zermine) was reportedly murdered on the night of the 26th in Ghor Province (Sadsiyah Village). While initially described as a crime of passion by a local Taliban police official, many now say it was carried out by 2 Taliban security forces personnel. The young woman’s family and neighbors have pressed the Taliban to bring the 2 unidentified Talibs to justice. Ghor has witnessed a spate of gender violence over the past ten days with the murders of 2 women occurring last Sunday and Monday.

  • ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN GHAZNI BURNED DOWN – Arsonists are said to have torched an elementary school in the Al-Biruni township on Friday night. The perpetrators were not identified but the school which serves around 600 students, was gutted in the fire and is considered a total loss.

NEXT 24 HOURS: No Known Threats Reported

Peace groups deploy combatants to protect civilians in North Darfur
That's a new one on me.
Are they defending from in front or from behind the civilians?
[SUDANTRIBUNE] Five armed movements, signatory of the Juba peace agreement, on Thursday, deployed hundreds of fighters on four-wheel drive vehicles to secure the city of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state.

The deployment aims at protecting civilians from militia attacks, as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continued their attacks on the city of El Geneina in West Darfur.

Observers fear that the ongoing conflict between the army and the RSF paramilitary group, made up of the Arab tribes of Darfur, may lead to the involvement of Darfur gangs in the ongoing conflict in the country.

Ahmed Hussein Mustafa, the front man for the Sudan Liberation Movement- Minni Minnawi told Sudan Tribune that a joint force comprising 5 armed movements with 120 military vehicles has been formed to secure the headquarters of government institutions, international organizations, and all areas west of El Fasher.

"The force aims to maintain security and stability, spread reassurance among civilians, combat negative phenomena, and resolve unruly groups that have appeared in the past days, active in looting, theft, and assaulting civilians and their property," Mustafa said.

During the past few days, El-Fasher witnessed bloody festivities between the army and RSF fighters in different parts of the city, killing 61 civilians.

Mediation by the governor of North Darfur, Nimir Abdel Rahman, and traditional leaders succeeded to establish a permanent cease-fire.

However,
women are made to be loved, not understood...
armed Arab groups appeared on cycle of violences and four-wheel drive vehicles in the city’s neighbourhoods after the fighting stopped. They carried out widespread looting and assaulting civilians in El Fasher. Also, they attacked Shala prison, releasing all inmates.

The SLM-MM front man stressed that the armed movements have taken a neutral position since the outbreak of the war and are seeking to mediate between the warring groups to stop the conflict and resort to a negotiated settlement.

The armed movements that make up this force are the SLM-MM, the SLM- Transitional Council headed by al-Hadi Idris, in addition to Justice and Equality led by Gibril Ibrahim, the Sudan Liberation Forces Gathering, and the Sudanese Alliance Forces.

Sudan's fighting death toll rose to 528 -health ministry
That's a suspiciously low corpse count, in my humble opinion.
NPR’s South Africa-based reporter claimed yesterday that fighting is almost exclusively in Khartoum, which is either true or bodies elsewhere are being ignored.
[SUDANTRIBUNE] Sudan’s Federal Ministry of Health has reported that the corpse count from festivities between the army and the Rapid Support has risen to 528, with thousands injured.

On Saturday, the ministry released a statement on the human causalities of fighting from 15 to 27 April 2023, indicating that battles are mainly taking place in the states of Khartoum and West Darfur.

" 528 people had been killed and 4,599 others injured according to the records of the hospitals in Sudan," said the Federal Health Ministry.

The festivities have caused significant damage to hospitals and medical facilities, making it difficult to provide medical care to those in need.

The statement also highlighted that the armed tribal conflict in West Darfur state resulted in the destruction of El Geneina’s main hospital and the Ministry of Health’s headquarters, causing a large number of uncounted deaths.

In a statement on Friday, Human Right Watch called on the Human Rights Council to hold an emergency meeting and create a mechanism to collect and preserve evidence of grave violations, identify likely perpetrators, and make recommendations for accountability.

Heavy fighting continues in Sudan despite US-brokered truce, RSF claims control of 90% of Khartoum
Unexpectedly.
[NYPOST] Heavy fighting
... as opposed to the more usual name-calling or slapsy...
continued to rock Sudan’s capital Saturday even as both sides in the conflict agreed to a 72-hour cease-fire extension this week.

Sudanese Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
s blasted paramilitary forces in Khartoum as the country’s former prime minister appealed for help to the international community and warned that the conflict in Sudan could become worse than the wars in Syria and Libya.

"Sudan is the largest country in that area, bordering seven countries," said Abdalla Hamdok, speaking at a conference in Kenya Saturday. "God forbid if Sudan is to reach a point of civil war proper."

As fighting raged in the capital, refugees who managed to flee massed at Sudan’s border with Egypt where thousands waited to leave the country.

Hundreds of people have already been killed and thousands have fled the bloody conflict in Khartoum and the nearby city of Bahri while many expatriates, including Americans, remained trapped in their homes as the Sudanese army continued to clash with paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces.

The army has been deploying jets or drones on RSF in residential neighborhoods across the capital, according to reports.

Rapid Support Forces claim control of 90% of Khartoum amidst ongoing clashes with Sudanese army

[Shafaq News]
......
Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) announced on Saturday that they had taken control of 90% of the capital, Khartoum, amidst ongoing festivities with the Sudanese army.

In a statement posted on Twitter, the RSF said that they had repelled attacks by the "putschist forces" and that several officers of different ranks had surrendered to their forces.

The RSF has renewed its commitment to the humanitarian truce
..The purposes of a truce are twofold: 1.) bring up more arms, ammunition, and reinforcements; and 2.) get the enemy to relax his vigilance. A truce is not the same thing as a ceasefire, and a ceasefire doesn't mean you have to stop shooting...
and has pledged to open safe passages for citizens to access their basic needs and facilitate the evacuation of foreign nationals.

The Sudanese army, on the other hand, accused the RSF of targeting retired officers, police, and security personnel and storming their homes.

The army released a statement on its Facebook page condemning the RSF's actions, describing it as "terrorist crimes and practices that have nothing to do with the legacies of the Sudanese people."

Since April 15, Sudan has been experiencing violent mostly peaceful festivities between the army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the RSF, led by Muhammad Hamdan Dagalo. The conflict has resulted in numerous casualties and has seen both sides accuse each other of human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
violations.

Haftar's militias arrest activists for planning a seminar on elections
[LIBYAOBSERVER.LY] Five political screeching muppets have been arrested in Sirte city, where Khalifa Haftar
...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy, so it's kind of hard to describe him as a Qadaffy holdover. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all. Actually, he is, but slowly...
's militias hold sway, Libya Crime Watch (LCW) has confirmed.

According to LCW, the screeching muppets, who were members of the "Together for the Homeland" party, were escorted to the city's security directorate.

Their arrest was against the backdrop of their intention to hold an awareness seminar on the elections, as they requested security approval from the local authorities to organize the gathering, the organization said.

"Such practices constitute a flagrant violation of human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
, fundamental freedoms, and international principles that guarantee freedom of expression and political participation."

It called for their immediate and unconditional release and stressed the need to respect political freedom and expression.

Turkish soldier killed in clash with PKK: reports
[Rudaw] A Ottoman Turkish soldier was killed in the southeast of the country, reportedly during festivities with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

A Ottoman Turkish officer affiliated with the interior ministry was injured in Nusaybin, Mardin province and died from his injuries in hospital, Numan Hatip, governor of Tokat province, said in a statement late on Friday. Mardin province is located in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
’s predominantly Kurdish southeast (known to Kurds as Bakur or Northern Kurdistan).

The interior and defense ministries confirmed the death of the soldier without providing details.

Several Ottoman Turkish media outlets and politicians said the soldier died during festivities with the PKK.

The PKK is an gang struggling for the increased rights of Kurds in Turkey but is considered a terrorist group by Ankara. The Ottoman Turkish army often targets the group at home and abroad, especially in the Kurdistan Region.

The PKK announced a unilateral ceasefire in February after the country was hit by devastating earthquakes. It then extended the truce to the May 14 general election, but said it maintains the right to defend itself if attacked.

The number of PKK fighters inside Turkey has shrunk in recent years, following a short-lived ceasefire in 2013, though frequent festivities take place in Kurdish provinces.

The SIU conducted a raid in the Metroville area near SITE and arrested Jehanzeb and Mohsin on a lead provided by two already held suspects —Mohammed Kamal Khan and Abdul Qadir.

"Suspect Jehanzeb is a nephew of TTP commander Syed Wali, who is based in Afghanistan," said SIU SSP Junaid Ahmed Sheikh.

"Syed Wali is involved in demanding extortion from traders, doctors and other people in Bloody Karachi

LHC moved against late-night police raid on Parvez Elahi's residence
[GEO.TV] Former Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

chief minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi's son Rasikh Elahi on Saturday moved the Lahore High Court (LHC) against the late-night police action at his father's property in Lahore and the arrest of scores of people.

A heavy contingent of Punjab Police Friday night raided Parvez Elahi's residence to arrest him, drawing strong criticism from the Pakistain Tehrik-e-Inaf (PTI), which has been voicing concerns against the arrests of its workers and leaders.

The hours-long police action came to a halt after Sohail Zafar Chattha, the Director General of Punjab's Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE), left the scene along with the police contingent.

The police also arrested 19 people on the charges of terrorism and upon resistance during the raid, according to the first information report (FIR). "The ACE team carried out a raid at Parvez Elahi's house in a bid to arrest him," said the FIR.

Iraq
Suspected ISIS militants kidnap two in Gwer, killing one
[Rudaw] Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems...
(ISIS) turbans are blamed for the abduction of two residents of Gwer town 50 kilometers west of Erbil and the death of one of them.

Zaynar Omar and Ghazi Qasim were kidnapped while they were fishing on Friday, Masoud Nuri, mayor of Gwer, told Rudaw’s Dilnya Rahman on Saturday. Omar was recused the same day and the body of Qasim was found the following day.

He added that the locals suspect that ISIS was to blame. Omar has also said that the people who kidnapped him were ISIS fighters.

"Following the incident, an investigative team was formed. The rescued person is being questioned. It is not clear if ISIS carried out the attack because no such case has taken place in Gwer after 2017, thanks to the efforts of Asayish [internal security] and Peshmerga forces," said Mayor Nuri.

The mayor said it is difficult to secure the area due to a security gap between Peshmerga and Iraqi forces in the region that lies on the border between areas of Kurdish and Iraqi control.

Villagers who found the body of Qasim, who is reportedly an Iraqi soldier, told Rudaw that he was shot three times.

Hours after their abduction, Sirwan Barzani, the Peshmerga commander in the area, tweeted that they had carried out an operation against ISIS near the town.

"Joint operations between the #Peshmerga and the Iraqi Army are continuous to clean out caves in the Qerechukh mountain used by #ISIS to hide their weapons and explosives. In the past two days, several operations were carried out," read the tweet.

Erbil and Baghdad have discussed establishing joint brigades to secure areas between their forces such as around Gwer. Talks stalled because of elections and a year of political wrangling to form a government, but funds for two joint brigades are included in the draft 2023 budget.

Masses rally against prospect of fresh overhaul push, as Knesset about to reconvene
[IsraelTimes] Protests held nationwide for 17th weekend, with 200,000 estimated in Tel Aviv; organizers announce day of ’equality’ demonstrations Thursday.
The sub rosa war of the Biden administration against Bibi Netanyahu continues, determined as they are to get their money’s worth from their payments to far left Israeli “activists”, Movement for Quality Government (MQG). MQG is the current name of Antifa’s branch in Israel for driving Bibi Netanyahu and his supporters out of politics, the most recent iteration of the Washington, DC-headquartered anti-democratic OneVoice Movement that’s been trying to remake Israel in its own image since 2092.
Protesters rallied across Israel Saturday evening as part of ongoing demonstrations against the government’s contentious judicial overhaul, with the Knesset set to reopen for its summer session on Sunday, raising the possibility of a renewed push to pass the explosive bills to radically curtail the judiciary.

Israeli company Crowd Solutions estimated that around 200,000 people were gathered at the main protest in Tel Aviv, Channel 13 news reported. Another 30,000 were estimated to be gathered in Haifa, 18,000 in Kfar Saba and 16,000 in Netanya, the company said. Rallies were held in dozens of other locations around the country. Organizers claimed 430,000 participants nationwide.

Iranian Cleric Attacked with Knife in Qom Following Traffic Accident

......
[Shafaq News] An Iranian holy man was attacked with a knife in Qom during a traffic accident on Saturday, following the recent killing of a member of Iran's Assembly of Experts.

Qom police chief Amir Mokhtari explained that the car crashed and two pedestrians were maimed. The driver attacked "one of the victims, a holy man," with a knife. The three maimed were taken to the hospital, including the driver, who cut himself with a knife.

The holy man is still in intensive care, and the motives for the attack are unclear.

The attack comes after the recent death of Ayatollah Abbas Ali Soleimani, a member of the Assembly of Experts who was shot in a bank in Babolsar.

Also, a holy man was reportedly hit by a vehicle in Tehran last Wednesday. The police confirmed that they were pursuing the driver responsible for the accident but did not provide further details.

CENTCOM says SDF has captured an ISIS weapon smuggler in Syria's Deir ez Zor
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

......
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Saturday that the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), supported by the US-led Global Coalition, arrested a dangerous Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems...
(ISIS) bad boy in Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria.

CENTCOM said in a statement, "In the early morning of April 28, 2023, Syrian Democratic Forces conducted a raid to capture an ISIS operative and degrade ISIS operations in the Deir ez- Zor province, Syria."

The statement added that the SDF "advised, assisted and enabled by Coalition Forces, planned and achieved the successful capture of Eid Hasan Hamoud al-Fahd, an assessed ISIS operative and known weapons and ammunition smuggler."

Such planned operations against weapons smugglers of the group aim "to disrupt and degrade ISIS’ ability to carry out violent mostly peaceful attacks in the region," read the statement.

It stressed commitment of the coalition in "advising, assisting, and enabling its partners to maintain security and stability throughout the region."

ISIS lost its final stronghold in Syria in March 2019. The SDF, with the support of the US-led Global Coalition, defeated ISIS after fierce battles in the town of Baghouz in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria, bringing an end to the so-called caliphate declared by the terrorist ISIS.

After Baghouz, thousands of ISIS forces of Evil were transferred to prisons, while their families were transferred to Hawl and Roj camps in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES)-held areas.
