1 Teen murder suspect stomped to death and filmed dying in Mississippi jail: coroner

Authorities confirmed that 18-year-old Mielun Butler died after an assault inside the Hinds County Raymond Detention Center on July 3, just two days after he was booked on a murder charge by the Jackson Police Department. Butler was being held on a $1 million bond.

Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said Butler was found unresponsive around 5:35 a.m. in a housing unit containing approximately 97 detainees. Jail staff provided medical treatment before Butler was transported to Merit Health, where he was pronounced dead. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is leading the homicide investigation, while the sheriff's office is conducting an internal administrative review into whether any policies or procedures were violated.
