7 I'd guess the couriers get on a certain list and when checking in, get pinged for special treatment a la 'personal staff of member of congress' or something and get into the 'shortcut' route. Decently dressed yet not attractive would walk right on by people without them looking twice, especially if looking once is der raycicst.

But on the point, is the question here about why are customs being handled locally in any aspect at all, and federalizing that procedure - therefore they (the local politicians) might lose their customs (access)?

8 @6 Customs (and agents) are for people entering the US, not leaving. In theory TSA should be identifying the people leaving the country with, IIRC, more than $10,000. In practice I don't think TSA is expected or trained to handle people leaving the country with larges sums of money.

9 My Georgia hunting license is no good in Germany or France. Seems to me that there should be a method to making the USD 'no good' in foreign lands unless approved in advance or electronically certified at an airport currency exchange. Perhaps some sort or algorithm of bar code.

Or am I just dreaming ?

10 Besoeker most of the world's international business is done in dollars and the petro-dollar is still king so that wouldn't work too well.

11 ...Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember a few years ago a European country had their customs guys go on strike (Greece, maybe) and airline flights into said country STOPPED dead for a few days due to some international agreement.

Or am I hallucinating that?
