There is a chance that Mojtaba is in fact dead, and that the regime deliberately selected a dead man as SL.

Why would they do that? In the hopes that israel goes looking for a ghost while ignoring the real decision makers. A distraction.

A fiendishly clever plot. But it assumes that Israel is whacking top guys serially, one after another. Makes more sense to go after a handful in parallel. You can whack them now or whack them later, and you never know when you might get lucky.

OK, Mossad might be wasting resources proving a dead guy is dead, but that is useful knowledge and a big media victory.
