3 I still don't get why the MM are doing this.

The short answer is they are mad, but that lacks explanatory power.
Let us ponder some possibilities:

1) They looked at the payoff matrix given the current situation and decided they liked "Islamic Apocalypse" better than any of the other choices such as "Live Happily Ever After". This is both a rational choice and a bit mad.

2) It makes for a great plot twist. Who expected to see the Arabs and the Juice fighting their common enemy, the Persians, standing if not together at least nearby as they deal with this annoyance. My compliments to whoever thought this one up!

3) It worked before. Way back in the pre-Islamic days when the world was desert tribes, attacking and subjugating your neighbors was a viable strategy. (see Mohamed, et al)

Unfortunately, this does not scale to the modern world. Due to global interconnections, now you are not just fighting the neighboring tribe and whatever resources they can muster, but multiple aircraft carriers from halfway around the world. It is bad luck to be the small dog in the fight, no matter how many buckets of sand you have.

4 Adding on to what Steve said:
Russian (and maybe China) has decided not to grant asylum to remaining Iranian leadership so they have nowhere to escape to.
Their deaths at the hands of the general population is likely to be very painful and maybe not quick
Even if they were pardoned and allowed to remain in Iran, they would have no power or influence and would, at best, be the same at every other citizen.
Islam forbids Muslims from taking their own life (unless of course you are murdering infidels)
