6 It isn't really fair to say the presidents added to the debt. They signed off on it, yes, but Congress holds the purse strings. Every time your representative tells you about something wonderful he's done for his district, you can bet it added to the debt. Democrats are usually the biggest spenders but I'm afraid it's all too true that Republicans go along for the ride.
