6 Not everyone that age demands a finished HGTV extravaganza. Trailing daughter #2’s very tall husband had upon graduating from university invested in a $30,000 post-war fixer upper bungalow in a nice enough but not exciting older neighbourhood — down the street from this house, in fact. His house was in the style of a Sears bungalow, built in 1947 — when building materials were still rationed — so the roof rafters had clearly been salvaged from a building condemned after a fire, and the studs were 1”x2” rotated 90* to have a wide enough nailing face rather than the standard 2x4s used before and after.

His parents helped him scrub it from top to bottom and paint the interior, his brother helped him refinish the floors, he spent his salary on a new furnace and hot water heater, then we helped them insulate and finish the attic for a third bedroom and office, put in a new kitchen, redo the bathroom, and get new carpet laid in the bedrooms.

He sold it a few years later when td#2 was transferred to Dallas, rolling the profit into the downpayment for their next home, but they worked really hard to get to that point, just as both his parents and Mr. Wife and I had done at the same age. Both kids, like both sets of parents, had worked their way through college in addition to scholarships, and had chosen a good public university rather than taken out huge loans to go ivy league. Interestingly, a great many of the top students from their very good public high school had made similar practical choices — some even choosing to go to community college for their first two years before transferring to university to finish, a substantial cost savings, though it wasn’t nearly as prestigious or as fun as the classic route. But the economy was going through a correction in 2008-2011, and the kids were being bombarded with warnings about financial risk.

8 It’s these spoilt kids nowadays, Seeking cure. They insist on hot water for washing their dishes, internal spaces heated well above freezing, flush toilets — the decadence is truly beyond belief. No doubt the Republic will fall within weeks after they take over.
