In fairness to the British nanny state, they did eliminate gun crime. In our modern by-the-numbers world, that counts as success.

Eeyores will claim that knives have simply replaced guns as the tool of choice, overall violence has not abated, and the net change is essentially zero. All of which is true, but that just means the nannies will have to work harder to mold the New Soviet Man or whatever we are calling that nowadays.
