3 That's nice and all, but from this distance the massacres give me the sense that there are some local tribal issues involved, not just international/religious politics.

4 Aren’t there always local and tribal issues, with religion being attached on top? Other than jihadi tourism, I mean. But even for ISIS in Syria, foreign fighters were put in units as much as possible by nationality or region, rarely mixed with the locals until the final collapse. Volunteer women, on the other hand, were handed out like candy, then recycled as their husbands were killed.
