Kearsarge

**USS *Kearsarge*** is a name shared by five notable ships in the United States Navy, all honoring **Mount Kearsarge** in New Hampshire. The most famous is the original **sloop-of-war (1861)**, which defeated the Confederate raider **CSS *Alabama*** in 1864 during the American Civil War.

Subsequent vessels carrying the name include:
* **USS *Kearsarge* (BB-5)**: A pre-dreadnought battleship launched in 1898, the only US battleship not named after a state, later converted into a crane ship (**AB-1**) in 1920.
* **USS *Kearsarge* (CV-33)**: An **Essex-class aircraft carrier** commissioned in 1946 that served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars and recovered two **Project Mercury** space capsules.
* **USS *Kearsarge* (LHD-3)**: The current active **Wasp-class amphibious assault ship**, commissioned in 1993, which supports Marine landing forces and humanitarian missions.

The name originates from **Mount Kearsarge** in Merrimack County, New Hampshire, a peak rising approximately 2,900 feet above sea level. The name "Kearsarge" is believed to be derived from the Native American Pennacook word "Carasarga."
