Police in London arrested two people on Wednesday over an attempted arson attack on a synagogue in the north of the city, amid an upsurge in antisemitic incidents in Britain.
The pair — a 47-year-old woman and a 46-year-old man — were detained in Watford, north of the capital, and are being held in custody, police said.
The attack shortly after midnight on Wednesday came after an arson attack on ambulances run by the Jewish volunteer emergency service Hatzalah in London last month and a deadly attack on a synagogue in Manchester in October 2025.
The latest incident targeting the Finchley Reform Synagogue, which police said was being treated as an “antisemitic hate crime,” was being investigated with support from counter-terrorism detectives.
“I hope the swift action by officers today to identify and arrest two people provides some reassurance and demonstrates how seriously we take attacks of this nature,” Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams, who leads policing in the area, said in a statement.
“We are aware of the significant concern that this incident will cause in the community, particularly in the wake of the arson attack in Golders Green last month,” said Williams, referencing the ambulance arson attack.
Describing the attack in an earlier statement, police said two people wearing dark clothing and balaclavas approached the synagogue in Finchley and “threw two bottles suspected to contain petrol,” which did not ignite, the Metropolitan Police Force said.
Monitoring groups have reported an upsurge in antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents in Britain, particularly since the start of the war Gaza war sparked by Hamas’s terror onslaught on October 7, 2023.
The Community Security Trust recorded 3,700 instances of anti-Jewish hate across the UK last year, a four percent rise on 2024, but down on 2023.
Two men and a boy have been charged over the ambulance attack on March 23, in which four Hatzalah ambulances were destroyed.
The 2025 Yom Kippur attack on the Manchester synagogue left two people dead and three seriously injured, prompting increased anxiety among Jewish communities.
In February, a court jailed two men for life after police foiled a separate plot to carry out an Islamic State-inspired gun attack on a Jewish gathering in Manchester.
Two Iranians also appeared in court in London in March, accused of spying on the Jewish community in London on behalf of Tehran.
Earlier this year, the British government announced that about 28 million pounds ($38 million) would be provided to help provide security at synagogues, Jewish schools and community centers.

'A lethal kinetic strike' was carried out on Wednesday, according to SOUTHCOM. The strike was ordered by US Southern Command General Francis L Donovan.
The military said the vessel was operated by a 'Designated Terrorist Organization,' and that intelligence confirmed it was 'transiting along known narco-trafficking routes in the Eastern Pacific and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations.'
No US military personnel were harmed in the strike, according to the announcement.
US Southern Command shared a declassified video on X and its website of the drug smuggling boat getting destroyed.
In the black and white footage, a vessel that appears to have been a three-engine speedboat can be seen cutting through the waves.
About five seconds into the video, a missile can be seen flying towards the boat from out of frame before striking it and causing a large explosion.
The speedboat can then be seen on fire and slowly coming to a stop before the video ends.
The vessel was destroyed as part of Operation Southern Spear, which was launched by the Trump administration in September 2025 in an effort to reduce the flow of drugs entering the US.
The operation's declared aims are 'detecting, disrupting, and degrading transnational criminal and illicit maritime networks.'
US Southern Command is in charge of carrying out the operation.
It is one of the eleven unified combatant commands in the United States Department of Defense, and its area of responsibility is the Caribbean, all of Latin America below Mexico and the surrounding waters.
Following the unveiling of Operation Southern Spear, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that several cartels, and even the regime of former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro, were designated as Foreign Terrorist Organizations.
In December 2025, President Trump signed an executive order designating fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction.
Those moves have given the US legal leeway to destroy suspected drug trafficking vessels and kill their operators without due process.
Critics of Operation Southern Spear have called the strikes on drug smuggling vessels illegal and expressed concern that the intelligence leading to the attacks may not always be accurate, creating the possibility of innocents being killed.
Wednesday's strike has brought the total number of vessels destroyed as part of Operation Southern Spear to 52, and it has brought the total number of people killed in the attacks to 174.
That breaks down to an average of about seven boats destroyed per month and an average of about 23 people killed per month since the operation began on September 1.
Between April 11 and Wednesday's strike, three other attacks that were part of Operation Southern Spear have been conducted.
Two boats in the Pacific were destroyed on Saturday. Two people were killed in the first strike, and a third who abandoned the vessel is presumed to be dead. An additional three people were killed in the second strike.
A third boat was destroyed on Monday, killing two more people.

Sources in Hezbollah and the Lebanese government told Rooters that efforts at reaching a ceasefire were underway. The reports came a day after a historic Israeli-Lebanese meeting in Washington, and six weeks after Hezbollah began attacking Israel amid the US-Israeli war with Iran, drawing a heavy Israeli military response.
For its part, the US denied pressuring Israel to agree to a ceasefire in Lebanon.
"This is not something we have asked for, nor is it part of the peace negotiations with Iran, but the president would welcome the end of hostilities in Lebanon as part of a peace agreement between Israel and Lebanon," read a statement attributed to a senior US official that was sent to querying news hounds.
Fighting between Israel and Hezbollah continued on Wednesday. Five IDF soldiers were maimed, one seriously and four lightly, in a Hezbollah rocket attack in southern Lebanon, the military announced. The troops were taken to a hospital and their families were notified, the IDF added.
During a visit to southern Lebanon on Wednesday, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir said he had approved new battle plans for both Lebanon and Iran and designated southern Lebanon, up to the Litani River, as a "killing zone for Hezbollah terrorists."
TEMPORARY TRUCE AIMED AT SPURRING IRAN, LEBANON PEACE TALKS
An Israeli security source told Channel 12 that while Washington seeks to de-escalate the fighting with Hezbollah, it is also sympathetic to Israeli concerns and therefore has proposed a temporary ceasefire lasting one week, preserving an option of returning to fighting if a more robust deal is not reached in that time.
An Israeli official rejected an Iranian claim that a ceasefire in Lebanon would take effect on Wednesday night.
"There is no ceasefire in Lebanon," a senior Israeli official told The Times of Israel. "It’s in Lebanon and Israel’s mutual interest to dismantle Hezbollah."
ZAMIR: IDF HAS APPROVED PLANS FOR LEBANON AND IRAN
Israeli officials have said the IDF is establishing a demilitarized "security zone" in southern Lebanon up to the Litani River, until the threat of Hezbollah is removed. The buffer zone would be controlled with surveillance and firepower, as well as ground troops in areas deemed strategically necessary, the military has said.
Defense Minister Israel Katz has said he instructed the IDF to raze all buildings in the so-called "first line" of Lebanese villages close to the Israeli border, to ensure Hezbollah cannot use them to stage attacks on Israel.
On Wednesday, Zamir visited the 162nd Division in the Beit Lif area of Lebanon, near the border with Israel.
"Yesterday, I approved plans for the future, together with the General Staff Forum. We continue to conduct ongoing situation assessments and approve plans both in Lebanon and in Iran," he was quoted by the IDF as saying during the visit.
He praised the IDF’s strikes in Iran and said the military was at "a very high level of readiness."
"Air Force aircraft are armed and ready, and the targets are loaded on the systems. We know how to launch them for a powerful strike immediately," Zamir continued.
LEBANON APPEALS TO UN OVER ISRAELI ATTACKS
Lebanon’s health ministry said on Wednesday that Israel targeted paramedics working in the southern town of Mayfadun "three consecutive times," killing at least three of them and injuring six others, while one paramedic remains missing.
The ministry said three paramedic teams were attacked, one after another, while trying to rescue people maimed in an initial Israeli strike.
It decried the "flagrant crime, which reflects the Israeli enemy’s determination to prevent paramedics from performing their life-saving work by any means."
The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the claims.
Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported separate Israeli strikes on Wednesday on two vehicles, both on the coastal highway around 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of Beirut and outside Hezbollah’s traditional strongholds.
Lebanon’s foreign ministry, meanwhile, sent a formal complaint to the United Nations ...an organization which on balance has done more bad than good, with the good not done well and the bad done thoroughly... about Israel’s April 8 attacks. The Lebanese health ministry says the April 8 attacks killed 357 people, including 71 women and 30 children. Israel has said the strikes killed more than 250 Hezbollah operatives.
Overall, the war in Lebanon has killed more than 2,000 people there and forced 1.2 million from their homes, Lebanese authorities say. The IDF has said that it has killed some 1,700 Hezbollah operatives in Lebanon, including hundreds of members of the terror group’s elite Radwan Force, since hostilities escalated.
In addition, 13 IDF soldiers have been killed in southern Lebanon amid the fighting, two non-combatants were killed by Hezbollah rockets, and an Israeli civilian was mistakenly killed in the north by Israeli artillery shelling.
Israel will expand the buffer zone in Lebanon while continuing to strike Hezbollah forces, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Wednesday evening.
The buffer zone will also be stretched eastward, Netanyahu noted, so that Israel "can better help our Druze brothers in their time of need."
Netanyahu added that the current fighting in Lebanon was focused around the town of Bint Jbail, which he described as "the capital of Hezbollah in southern Lebanon," and added that the IDF is close to taking the town.
The ongoing talks with Lebanon, Netanyahu said, were currently taking place due to Israel's strength. The talks had two purposes: dismantling Hezbollah and establishing a lasting peace. "Peace through strength," Netanyahu noted.

The ceasefire will last only until Hezbollah breaks it, which will be a matter of days, at best. In the meantime, the IDF units in the fight get a short break to run home to visit their families and do their laundry, and load up on ammunition.

According to the statement, Shomua Abu Abed was detained in March, during the war with Iran that started February 28, and had been passing information to a foreign agent since October in exchange for hundreds of dollars in cryptocurrency.
Abu Abed allegedly carried out "a large number of missions," including photographing security sites, IDF bases, and the Haifa oil refinery, as well as transmitting information about an unnamed Israeli former security official.
Abu Abed "carried out the missions despite suspecting from the early stages of the relationship that she was being deployed by an Iranian entity," the statement said.
Abu Shomua was charged in the Nazareth District Court, and law enforcement requested she be held in jug until the conclusion of the proceedings against her, police and the Shin Bet said.
Police have over the past two years arrested more than 50 suspected spies for Iran in some 40 cases that have been made public. Police are reportedly forming an Iran espionage investigations unit, after a man was accused in a recent case of plotting to harm former prime minister Naftali Bennett.
The growing number of suspected spies has already prompted Israel to open up a new wing in Haifa’s Damon prison for those indicted on such espionage charges.
Only one of the alleged spies has been convicted so far, as most cases are still making their way through the legal system.

About 70 Paleostinian men were found hiding inside a garbage truck by Israeli police as they attempted to cross into Israel from the West Bank, apparently in search of work.
The Israel Police released footage showing the back of the truck when it was being opened late Monday, revealing the men tightly crammed inside the waste compartment. Police are seen in the video, some with their weapons drawn, surrounding the truck.
Some of the men inside raised their hands in the air or put them behind their heads as they were discovered and pulled out of the truck, one by one. Occasionally, a voice in Arabic can be heard commanding: "Eskot," or "Be silent."
The Defense Ministry said the men were "trying to infiltrate central Israel" and that they were stopped at a West Bank checkpoint.
Authorities did not provide details on the motive for the attempted entry, but Itai Almog, a local police commander, described them as "illegal entrants," a term usually referring to Paleostinian laborers who enter Israel without legal authorization.
Almog said the men were on their way to cities across Israel and taken for questioning. The driver, an Israeli citizen, was driving without a proper license and arrested.

Some in the West Bank have said they haven’t been able to pay rent after losing the permit to work inside Israel. Confined to the territory, where jobs are scarce and wages far lower, some have sold their belongings or gone into debt as they try to pay for food, electricity and school expenses for their children. Others have paid steep fees for black-market permits or tried to sneak into Israel, risking arrest or worse if they are mistaken for terrorists.
Very sad. If only the government of the West Bank, the Palestinian Authority, which is rally the old PLO dressed up in a suit and tie, hadn’t continued their pay-for-slay program among many others that encourage terror attacks on Israel. After 10/7 allowing that to continue is just too risky.
Israel, which has militarily controlled the West Bank since capturing it from Jordan in 1967 during the Six Day War, says it is under no obligation to allow Paleostinians to enter for work and makes such decisions based on security considerations.
Before the war, tens of thousands of Paleostinians worked inside Israel, mainly in construction and service jobs.

The problem with modern/educated societies is that the younger generations do not learn to work. Examples:
At 14 I worked at a dairy cleaning up manure. For pay
During shop class, a 48 ford was disassembled and kids worked on engine, transmission and body. I helped with bailing hay at harvesting hay. A friend mowed the cemetery. One friend trapped minks.

[IsraelTimes] A Palestinian who allegedly attempted to stab an Israeli man at a West Bank farming outpost was shot and “neutralized,” the military says.
The IDF says troops were dispatched to the Emek Doron farm, near the settlement of Revava, following “a report of a terrorist who tried to carry out a stabbing attack.”
Aside from the suspect, no other injuries are reported.
[IsrelTimes] Two remotely operated, improvised explosive devices detonated in Tehran early today, Iran’s state media reports.
A Revolutionary Guard security source says the explosions slightly injured three people including a member of the paramilitary Basij, an all-volunteer force loyal to the Islamic Republic, the Islamic Republic News Agency says.
The state media agency reports a third device was defused.
Chip DillerMohammad Balideh, a Revolutionary Guard commander for Tehran region 10, told the Hamshahri newspaper “the situation is normal and under control.”
“Nothing extraordinary happened here, just a limited explosion on the street at the hands of traitorous and unpatriotic elements, with no fatalities or serious damages,” Balideh says.
