Afghanistan’s Shadow Army: NMF Strikes Back at the Taliban October 24, 2025
[SriLankaGuardian] A covert network of former soldiers and youth fighters is challenging Taliban rule across Afghanistan through targeted operations and outspoken defiance.
On October 20, National Mobilization Front (NMF) fighters carried out a targeted operation in Kabul city in the vicinity of the First District. The target of this operation was a prominent ‘commander’ of the Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP). No further discloser has been made.
In the intervening night of October 13-14, a series of operations by NMF fighters were carried out against the (Afghan) Taliban on the main road of Takhar University in the Sixth District of Taloqan city, in Taloqan Province, in which one Taliban fighter was killed and another two were injured. A Taliban Ranger vehicle was also partially destroyed.
On September 23, NMF killed a Taliban intelligence officer after a vehicle of the Kabul Intelligence Directorate belonging to the Taliban was targeted by its fighters in the Ghaibi Baba settlement area of 17th District in Kabul.
On September 12, NMF fighters targeted Qari Shabir Ahmad, the Intelligence Director of Shigal District in Kunar Province, killing him inside his home.
On June 25, NMF fighters conducted an operation, killing one Taliban fighter and injuring two, at the Jaldak Checkpoint in the Khum-Zargar area of Hesa-e-Awal District in Kapisa Province
Apart from these violent attacks, NMF has been very vocal on various ‘policies’ of the Taliban regime. On September 18, 2025, for instance, it released a statement on X, condemning the Taliban imposed internet ban, declaring, “The internet shutdown in the provinces demonstrates the weakness and inability of this group against the freedom fighters…” Earlier, on August 25, NMF critizised the Taliban’s decision to hand over a number of Afghans who cooperated with North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), specifically those related to the United Kingdom, to Iran.
As reported on October 4, 2023, a number of soldiers of the previous Afghanistan government under National Mobilization Front aka National Basij Front, officially announced their existence and objectives against the Taliban group in Afghanistan. According to these former soldiers, after the Taliban assumed power in Afghanistan on August 15, 2021, most of the country’s erstwhile military personnel abandoned their weapons and fled the country. Taliban also arrested, tortured and killed many soldiers in different provinces under various pretexts and buried some of them in mass graves in Baghlan, Herat, Nangarhar, Panjshir, and Parwan provinces.
The founding leadership of NMF remains shadowy, though Afghan-language media name Jawed Deh Sabzai as the General Commander of the group. NMF is active in at least 12 to 14 provinces, including Takhar, Baghlan, Parwan, Kapisa, and Kabul. The group highlights that it operates covertly and without overt external association.
NMF’s statement disclose that its members pledge to defend Afghanistan “until the last drop of their blood” and to fight Taliban rule. It also publicly supports cooperation or unity with other anti-Taliban fronts. On September 8, 2025, for example, NMF welcomed the announcement of the Afghanistan Peace & Freedom Movement (APFM) as a collective effort to “free Afghanistan from Taliban and establish an inclusive government.”
The group has identified the Taliban regime as its main enemy, which it views to be a traitor to the national cause and unlawful. It positions itself as open to all Afghan youth and former Security Forces’ personnel who are willing to fight. It also considers Islamic State of Khorasan Province (ISKP) to be its adversary. On June 3, an NMF post on X disclosed that a group of youths led by ‘Commander’ Idris Sediq, the ‘military officer’ in charge of Shakardara (in Kabul Province), had announced that they would fight against the Taliban and ISKP within the framework of the NMF of Afghanistan.
NMF has emerged as a new constituent of Afghanistan’s evolving anti-Taliban resistance, operating through small, mobile guerrilla units across multiple provinces. Its appearance reflects, at once, the continued fragmentation of opposition forces as well as the persistence of organized dissent within Afghanistan. For the Taliban regime, it represents a direct challenge to claims of nationwide dominance. NMF’s activities are another index of the continuing instability of Afghanistan’s security environment and the complex interplay between internal resistance and regional strategic interests.

According to field reports, insurgents launched the attack late Feb. 20 from multiple directions using gun trucks, motorcycles, and foot elements in an attempt to overwhelm the base.
Troops responded with sustained and coordinated firepower, engaging the attackers into the early hours of Feb. 21 before forcing a withdrawal.
Troops have thwarted a coordinated multi-pronged terrorist assault on positions in Kukawa after a prolonged overnight battle supported by air strikes.
Military sources said the attackers, mounted on gun trucks, motorcycles and on foot, launched the assault from multiple directions late on Feb. 20.
Troops mounted a determined defence, engaging the insurgents in intense combat that lasted into the early hours of Feb. 21 before forcing them to withdraw while dragging away casualties.
Air strikes later destroyed one gun truck and several motorcycles carrying fleeing fighters, neutralising additional terrorists.
CJNG has its own “Drone Operators” unit. From 2021 to 2025, it was responsible for roughly one in five cartel drone attacks linked to a particular cartel – 42 incidents that resulted in 21 deaths, according to a report from the National Counterterrorism Innovation, Technology, and Education Center...
That drone was identified as a DJI Avata 2, which sells for about $600 each. It was attributed to the Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación, or Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

[Regnum] Armed men stormed the Puerto Vallarta airport in the Mexican state of Jalisco and set planes on fire. Eyewitnesses reported this on social media on February 22.
Mass unrest erupted in the state of Jalisco following the assassination of the leader of the Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) drug cartel, nicknamed El Mencho. Armed gang members began blocking roads and setting buses and trucks on fire.
One of the groups stormed Puerto Vallarta Airport, which is the third busiest in the country because it is a key tourist route.
Video footage posted online by eyewitnesses shows people running around the airport in panic, seeking shelter. Amid the unrest in Mexico, some foreign airlines have already cancelled flights to the country. Mexican authorities have urged tourists and citizens to stay home and cancel their trips due to the serious security threat.
Earlier, Mexico reported the assassination of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, aka "El Mencho," the head of one of the country's largest drug cartels, the Jalisco New Generation. The assassination was carried out by units of the Mexican Armed Forces. In response to the actions of security forces, cartel members began blocking highways in several regions, including the states of Jalisco, Michoacán, Colima, Tamaulipas, Guanajuato, and Aguascalientes.
However, there has been no official confirmation from the authorities that El Mencho has been eliminated.
"The operation took place in the municipality of Talpa de Allende in the state of Jalisco," the publication noted, citing government sources.
The operation was carried out by units of the Mexican Armed Forces. In response to the security forces' actions, cartel members began blocking highways in several regions, including the states of Jalisco, Michoacán, Colima, Tamaulipas, Guanajuato, and Aguascalientes.
Cervantes was considered one of the country's most powerful drug lords following the arrest of Joaquín Guzmán, known as El Chapo. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel controls a significant portion of the drug trade and operates in many regions of Mexico.
According to the statement, troops came under attack and returned fire "in defense of their integrity," leaving four CJNG members dead at the incident area and three others critically wounded. The ministry stated that those three later died during a medevac transfer to Mexico City, including Mencho.
During this operation, military personnel were attacked, so in defense of their integrity they repelled the aggression, resulting in four members of the "CJNG" criminal group dead at the scene and three seriously injured, who lost their lives during their transfer via air to Mexico City; among the latter is Ruben "N" (a) Mencho, however, the corresponding authorities will handle the expert activities for their identification.
The ministry also reported that CJNG members had armored vehicles and rocket launchers.
In addition to the above, two other members of this criminal organization were detained and various weaponry and armored vehicles were seized, including rocket launchers capable of downing aircraft and destroying armored vehicles.
The statement noted that National Guard and Mexican Army units were being deployed into the Jalisco area, where CJNG operates, to "reinforce security" amid retaliatory unrest this afternoon.

Earlier, the Army had said that an encounter broke out in Passerkut in the Chatroo area of the district at about 10:30 am.

The terrorists, who were reportedly hiding inside a mud house at the foothills, opened fire as troops moved closer, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Notably, the Chatroo forest belt saw nearly six shootouts between bandidossnuffies and security forces last month, in which a soldier and a terrorist were killed.

According to Palestinian media, the two were shot amid IDF operations in Beit Furik, east of Nablus, that followed a clash between locals and settlers, during which troops opened fire at a car, injuring a 14-year-old.

The military has not commented on the reports, but regularly says such killings come in response to ceasefire violations.
Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry confirmed in a noon report that hospitals in the Strip had received three people wounded and the bodies of two people killed by the IDF over the past 24 hours.
The statement did not identify the dead or wounded or specify where they were targeted or the severity of the wounds.
Palestinian media yesterday reported two men killed by IDF gunfire around noon, including 30-year-old Majed Abu Maaruf in northern Gaza’s Jabalia and 46-year-old Osama al-Najjar near southern Gaza’s Khan Younis.
Najjar’s body was reportedly brought to Khan Younis’s Nasser Hospital. There did not appear to be reports that Abu Maaruf’s body had been brought to a hospital.
The IDF on Saturday said it killed a “terrorist” who crossed the ceasefire line in northern Gaza and endangered troops. The military has not commented on the reports that it also killed a man in southern Gaza.
As of today, the IDF has killed 614 Palestinians throughout the ceasefire that began in October, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. The figure cannot be independently verified and does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.

New anti-government protests continued for a second day in Iran, witnesses said Sunday, as university students in Tehran and another city demonstrated around memorials for thousands of people killed in a crackdown on previous nationwide demonstrations about six weeks ago.
Iran’s state news agency said students protested at five universities in the capital, Tehran, and one in the city of Mashhad on Sunday. The scattered protests erupted Saturday at universities following 40-day memorials for people killed in January during anti-government rallies.
Iran’s government has not commented on the latest protests. However,
facts are stubborn; statistics are more pliable... Iranian media sought to highlight pro-regime demonstrations.
Following campus rallies commemorating the protest dead on Saturday, the Fars news agency on Sunday published videos of fresh crowds of dozens of people waving Iranian flags and carrying memorial photographs at universities in the capital, Tehran.
One showed a rowdy gathering at Sharif University of Technology shouting, "Death to the shah" — a reference to the monarchy ousted by the 1979 Islamic Revolution — as they faced off with another group, with men in uniforms between them.
Fars said there had been "tensions" at a minimum of three universities in Tehran, where some students chanted "anti-establishment" slogans.

Many Iranians have held ceremonies marking the traditional 40-day mourning period in the past week. Most of the protesters are believed to have been killed around January 8 and 9, according to activists tracking the situation.
Iranians across the country are still reeling with shock, grief, and fear after the earlier protests were crushed by the deadliest crackdown ever seen under the rule of 86-year-old Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei ...the very aged actual dictator of Iran, successor to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini...> . Thousands of people were killed, and tens of thousands are believed to have been arrested.
Although the crackdown tamped down the largest protests, smaller ones are still occurring, according to protesters and to videos shared on social media.
During the 1979 Islamic Revolution that toppled the shah and brought the Islamic Theocratic Republic to power, 40-day memorials for slain protesters often turned into rallies that security forces tried to crush, causing new deaths. Those were then marked 40 days later, with new protests.
Posts on social media Saturday and Sunday have alleged that security forces tried to restrict people from attending some 40-day ceremonies.
The new protests come while Iran braces for the possibility of a US attack, as the Trump administration pushes for concessions from Iran on its nuclear program and other issues. The US has built up its largest military presence in the Middle East in decades.
The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency says at least 7,015 people were killed in the previous protests and crackdown, including 214 government forces. The group has been accurate in counting deaths during previous rounds of unrest in Iran and relies on a network of activists there to verify deaths.
The corpse count continues to rise as the group crosschecks information despite disrupted communication with those inside the Islamic Theocratic Republic.
Iran’s government offered its only corpse count from the previous protests on January 21, saying 3,117 people were killed. Iran’s theocracy in the past has undercounted or not reported fatalities from past unrest.
The News Agency that Dare Not be Named has been unable to independently assess the corpse count, given authorities have disrupted internet access and international calls in Iran.
