[IsraelTimes] Taiwan has seemingly become the first country to welcome Israel’s recognition of Somaliland.
Israel on Friday became the first country in the world to recognize the breakaway Somalian region as an independent state, drawing widespread condemnation from countries backing Mogadishu.
In a statement, the foreign ministry in Taipei says Israel, Somaliland and Taiwan are “like-minded democratic partners sharing the values of democracy, freedom, and rule of law,” according to the Focus Taiwan news site.
Israel enjoys friendly relations with Taiwan and strong trade ties, though the relationship is largely informal due to Israel’s diplomatic ties with the People’s Republic of China.
According to Focus Taiwan, Taipei and Somaliland have fostered bilateral relations for several years, and in 2020 opened reciprocal representative offices in each other’s capitals.

[HUMANGLEMEDIA] The Dec. 25 US strikes against terrorists in Sokoto State, northwestern Nigeria, have left villages rattled and wanting to flee, as waves of misinformation spread more fear and push many residents to abandon their homes.
When the explosive devices from the US airstrike landed in Birkini, a satellite village in Jabo town, Sokoto, North West Nigeria, on Thursday, Dec. 25, locals said they were alarmed after years of relative calm that allowed them to sleep peacefully at night. More than 18 civilian neighbouring communities were similarly shaken after the blast in Tambuwal Local Government Area (LGA), prompting some residents to pack their belongings and flee.
The villagers believed they were under direct attack.
Before the news of the incident became widespread, rumours spread in the area that the American government was targeting Muslim-dominated settlements in Nigeria.
Muhammad Bawa, a commercial driver from Birkini, said the airstrike, which targeted suspected Islamic State terrorists, occurred close to his farm. He said locals read social media posts claiming that “the American government is envious of Nigeria’s long history of peace and has been misled into believing that Nigerian Christians are being persecuted”.
To be fair, the Houthis have a slightly higher probability of actually hitting their target country if it’s just across the way. Not that it actually gets as high as probable — I’d be very worried if I were somewhere in the rest of Somalia when they were shooting off, or in Saudi Arabia, or in the middle of the ocean, but still. The leader of Yemen’s Houthi rebels warned that any Israeli presence in Somaliland would be considered a “military target,” according to a statement from the group published Sunday.
“We consider any Israeli presence in Somaliland a military target for our armed forces, as it constitutes aggression against Somalia and Yemen, and a threat to the security of the region,” said the group’s chief Abdulmalik al-Houthi, according to a statement published by rebel media online.
Israel on Friday announced that it was officially recognizing Somaliland, a first for the self-proclaimed republic that in 1991 declared it had unilaterally separated from Somalia.
The Houthi chief warned that the move carried grave consequences, saying recognition was “a hostile stance targeting Somalia and its African surroundings, as well as Yemen, the Red Sea, and the countries along both shores of the Red Sea.”
Somaliland, which has for decades pushed for international recognition, enjoys a strategic position on the Gulf of Aden and has its own money, passport and army.
Regional analysts believe that a rapprochement with Somaliland would provide Israel with better access to the Red Sea, enabling it to hit Houthi rebels in Yemen.
The Houthis began attacking Israel and maritime traffic in November 2023, a month after the October 7, 2023, Hamas massacre, firing more than 130 ballistic missiles and dozens of drones and cruise missiles at Israel, including one that killed a civilian and wounded several others in Tel Aviv in July 2024, prompting Israel’s first strike in Yemen.
Israel in response repeatedly attacked the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen, located some 1,800 kilometers (1,100 miles) away. Since the October 2025 ceasefire in Gaza, the Houthis have halted their attacks on Israel and the IDF has not struck the rebel group.
Somaliland has been diplomatically isolated since its unilateral declaration of independence, even if it has generally experienced greater stability than Somalia, where Al-Shabaab Islamic militants periodically mount attacks in the capital Mogadishu.
Israel’s recognition of Somaliland was criticized by the African Union, Egypt, Turkey, the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council and the Saudi-based Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
The European Union and the US State Department also insisted that Somalia’s sovereignty should be respected. The UN Security Council is slated to hold an emergency session on Monday to discuss the Israeli recognition.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer was under pressure Sunday after "abhorrent" social media posts by a British-Egyptian activist came to light, days after the premier welcomed the former prisoner’s return to the country.
Alaa Abd el-Fattah only arrived back in the UK a few days ago, after years of diplomatic efforts by London to secure his release from detention in Egypt.
But after old social posts emerged of him calling for violence against "Zionists" and the police, the opposition conservatives called Sunday for him to be stripped of his citizenship and deported to Egypt.
Posting on X on Friday, Starmer had said he was "delighted" Fattah had been reunited with his loved ones in the UK, after Egypt lifted its travel ban.
Now Starmer is facing calls to retract those comments over the content of the activist’s posts, which date back to 2010.
According to The Daily Telegraph, the tweets include statements that "I consider killing any colonialists and especially Zionists heroic, we need to kill more of them," as well as "There was no genocide against Jews by the Nazis — after all, many Jews are left," and also a tweet reading: "Dear Zionists, please don’t ever talk to me, I’m a violent mostly peaceful person who advocated the killing of all Zionists including civilians, so f*** off."
He also once wrote: "Police are not human, they don’t have rights, we should just kill them all."
A Foreign Office statement said Sunday: "Mr El-Fattah is a British citizen. It has been a long-standing priority under successive governments to work for his release from detention, and to see him reunited with his family in the UK. The government condemns Mr El-Fattah’s historic tweets and considers them to be abhorrent."
The tweets had also previously surfaced in 2014, when he was nominated for the prestigious Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. His nomination was later withdrawn due to the controversy.
Shadow justice minister Robert Jenrick, of the opposition Conservatives, called on Sunday for Fattah to be stripped of his citizenship.
"If the Prime Minister really was unaware that El Fattah was an bad boy, he should immediately retract his comments expressing ’delight’ at his arrival and begin proceedings to revoke his citizenship and deport him," Jenrick wrote on X.
Fattah was a leading voice in Egypt’s 2011 Arab Spring uprising. He was detained in Egypt in September 2019, and in December 2021 was sentenced to five years in prison on charges of spreading false news.
His imprisonment was branded a breach of international law by UN Sherlocks, and international campaigns were launched to get him freed.
His mother went on a long-running hunger strike as part of her efforts to secure his release. Fattah himself went on hunger strike this March while behind bars and was later released after being pardoned by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi.
The Board of Deputies of British Jews said in a statement Sunday that it had raised the issue of Fattah’s past comments with the government.
"His previous bad boy and violent mostly peaceful rhetoric aimed at ’Zionists’ and white people in general is threatening to British Jews and the wider public," the organization said. "The cross-party campaign for such a person, and the warm welcome issued by the government, demonstrate a broken system with an astonishing lack of due diligence by the authorities."

As many as 10,500 Pakistani workers will be provided employment in various sectors, including ship breaking, hospitality, healthcare and agriculture, as well as welding, technician roles, chefs, waiters, housekeeping, nursing, medical technicians and farming.
Skilled and semi-skilled job aspirants will travel to Italia for employment in these sectors. Each year, 3,500 Pak workers will secure overseas jobs under seasonal and non-seasonal quotas.
This includes 1,500 Paks under the seasonal quota and 2,000 under the non-seasonal quota annually. Italia is the first European country to allocate job quotas specifically for Pakistain.

It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. The same group claimed last week to have broken into former prime minister Naftali Bennett’s phone.
In a statement on X, the Handala hack group said it had hacked into an iPhone 16 Pro Max belonging to Braverman, adding it would release later in the day details of his alleged involvement in the scandal that has roiled Netanyahu’s office.
The first files released purportedly contain phone numbers of brass hats and others in Netanyahu’s inner circle, including the premier’s wife Sara Netanyahu.
There are also what appear to be innocuous videos and official documents, including one on emergency procedures put in place during the June war with Iran.
The group called its operation Bibi Gate, an apparent reference to the affair.
The Prime Minister’s Office told The Times of Israel, "No breach has been found. The issue is being investigated."
"We have everything: encrypted chats, hidden deals, shameful moral and financial indulgences, abuse of power, blackmail, payoffs. For years, you performed your little dance, thinking Handala was not among you. But we were in the room, every time," the hacker group claimed.
"The files, the voices, the videos, every thread of Braverman’s double life, every secret that ties your regime to the heart of corruption, are about to surface," Handala wrote.
In the Qatargate affair, two of Netanyahu’s advisers are alleged, while they were in his employ, to have worked on behalf of Qatar for the Perception PR firm headed by Yisrael Einhorn, Netanyahu’s former campaign manager.

Earlier this month, images, contacts, and other information claimed by Handala to have been obtained from Bennett’s phone were published on a website alleged to be run by the hacker group, and a link to download what it claimed was his list of phone contacts was shared by the account @Handala_Red on X.
There was no way to confirm that the account and the website were run by the group claiming to have hacked the former prime minister’s phone. Bennett said that while his phone itself was not hacked, unauthorized access was gained to his Telegram account.
Along with the message and the list of contacts, Handala published various images of Bennett with his family and at public events, as well as photos of several official letters that it claimed he had sent and received.
Bennett, who served as prime minister from June 2021 to June 2022, is seen as the most credible challenger to Netanyahu in next year’s elections.

The report said that a Russian rocket sent the satellites to circle the Earth on a 500-kilometer (310-mile) orbit from the Vostochny launchpad in eastern Russia.
The three satellites are dubbed Paya, Kowsar and Zafar-2.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Iran and Russia have deepened ties, with Western countries accusing Iran of providing missiles and drones for Russian attacks, though Tehran denies that.
The two countries also signed a "strategic partnership" treaty in January.

The Defense Ministry announced on Sunday the delivery of the first operational high-power laser interception system developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd., dubbed "Iron Beam," to the Israel Defense Forces.
The system, which has successfully intercepted rockets, mortar shells and drones during extensive testing, will be absorbed by the air force and integrated into the country’s multi-layered air defense array alongside Iron Dome, David’s Sling and Arrow systems.
Calling the handover "a historic occasion," Defense Minister Israel Katz said the system marks "the first time in the world that a high-power laser interception system has reached operational maturity," adding that it "changes the rules of the game and sends a clear message to all our enemies... do not test us."
Defense Ministry Director General Amir Baram said the delivery "marks the transition from development to serial production," calling Iron Beam "only the beginning of the technological revolution" and noting it is expected to significantly improve both Israel’s defensive capabilities and the cost balance between threats and costly interceptors.
IAF chief Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar described the moment as "especially moving," saying the system is "another vital component in the air defense battle of our forces, who proved their operational capabilities during the war."
Rafael CEO Yoav Turgeman said the company is "proud to deliver... the most advanced laser system in the world for intercepting aerial threats," noting that even during intense fighting, Rafael "proved impressive operational capabilities using high-power lasers."
Bezhalel Machlis, president and CEO of Elbit Systems — which supplied the laser for the system — also welcomed the delivery, saying that "the company continues its work on the development of high-power laser solutions for military applications."

On December 1, it was announced that the Iron Beam would be handed over to the IDF at the end of the month, with the Defense Ministry’s Directorate of Defense Research and Development head Danny Gold saying that "with development complete and a comprehensive testing program that has validated the system’s capabilities, we are prepared to deliver initial operational capability to the IDF."
The Iron Beam has been in development for over a decade, after it was first unveiled in 2014. It was declared operational in September after completing development and final tests.
The system is not meant to replace the Iron Dome or other air defense systems, but to supplement and complement them, shooting down smaller projectiles and leaving larger ones for the more robust missile-based batteries such as the David’s Sling and Arrow systems.
As long as there is a constant source of energy for the laser, there is no risk of it ever running out of ammunition. Officials have hailed the system as a potential "game-changer" in the battle against projectile attacks.
The main downside of a laser system is that it does not function well in low visibility, including heavy cloud cover or other inclement weather.
[IsraelTimes] Syrian authorities have released one of the country’s few remaining Jews, Salim Hamadani, after he was arrested several weeks ago, a Jewish community activist says.
Hamadani, an antiquities dealer in Damascus, was reportedly arrested on suspicion of illegal trading in antiquities.
Joe Jajati, who was born in Syria, lives in New York and acts as a liaison between the Jewish community and the Syrian government, says Hamadani has been released after 20 days in detention.
Jajati, a friend of Hamadani, says on X that Hamadani has been cleared of all charges and thanks the Syrian government for its “diligence, cooperation, and for ensuring a fair and transparent trial.”
Jajati adds that the government showed Hamadani a “high standard of care, respect, and dignity” during his detention, and that the arrest was “not an act of prejudice.”
Hamadani’s arrest came at a sensitive time, as the new Syrian government works to improve its international image, given concerns over its treatment of minorities.
Only a handful of Jews remain in Syria, but Syrian Jewish expatriates in the US, including Jajati, have been working to build ties with the new government since it took power earlier this year.

Sheikhmous Ahmed, who supervises all IDP and refugee camps in Rojava, confirmed to Rudaw English that Iraq is repatriating a new batch of nationals. He said the group comprises 230 families (840 individuals).
Al-Hol, which holds nearly 25,000 people with alleged ISIS ties, is located in Hasaka province and has long been notorious for dire living conditions and the presence of radicalized individuals, earning a reputation as a potential incubator for extremism. Iraqis and Syrians constitute the majority of its residents, though thousands of people from other countries who joined ISIS or lived under its rule also remain in the camp.
The camp previously housed around 60,000 people.
The latest batch of Iraqi, comprising around 240 families (around 850 individuals), was repatriated earlier this month.
Regarding the total number of Iraqis who have returned from al-Hol camp, Jahangir stated that the figure "has reached approximately 21,000 Iraqi citizens."
Iraqis returning from al-Hol are transferred to al-Jadaa camp in Nineveh province for rehabilitation before being reintegrated into society.
Baghdad has reached an agreement with the United Nations ...a formerly good idea gone bad... ensuring that no Iraqi families will remain in al-Hol by 2027, with all expected to be returned through staged repatriations.
In September, Iraq hosted a meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York to advance plans to empty and dismantle al-Hol. The gathering resulted in the creation of a US-led joint task cell to accelerate the repatriation of foreign nationals.
