The officer promptly ordered a search of Amaya's vehicle, leading to the startling discovery of the group - which included some children - crammed together in the sleeping area of the cab.
Amaya is now charged with 23 counts of smuggling of persons, including some minors. He is also charged with possession of a controlled substance under one gram, according to the Laredo Morning Times. The truck driver can now face a lengthy prison sentence under a 2023 law signed by Governor Greg Abbott, under which individuals caught smuggling people in Texas face a mandatory 10 year prison sentence. He remained in custody Monday evening on multiple bonds exceeding $100,000.
Meanwhile, the migrants - from Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico - were referred to Border Patrol.
In the body camera footage shared by the Department of Public Safety, the truck could be seen traveling down the highway with the trooper in tow before he pulled Amaya over.
At first, the suspect claimed he was just on his way to pick something up - and when he was asked if he had a commercial driver license, Amaya said he just did not have it on him at the time.
Didn’t even bother to have fake documents? Did he never hear that Planning Prevents Problems?
When the trooper then asked for permission to search the vehicle, Amaya seemed to get defensive.
'Is that required?' he asked the trooper as he tried to call his lawyer.
'There's no reason you should be searching the vehicle,' he insisted.
At that point, the trooper informed Amaya that he would get a K9 to search the vehicle, and if the dog found anything, he would have probable cause to search the truck.
'That's fine, I'd like to just wait for the other units,' the trooper replied.
Backup arrived shortly afterward, and a K-9 was walked around the truck until the officer called out, 'he got a hit!,' at which point Amaya was detained.
Third strike and he’s out.
Together with a third officer, the trooper searched the vehicle - unzipping the compartment to the sleeping area, where he found the migrants sitting.

[SucanTribune] South Sudan’s military has disarmed and taken in Sudanese soldiers fleeing the contested Heglig oilfield and intends to assume control of the area from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a senior general said on Monday.
The RSF claimed control of Heglig, a strategic hub in Sudan’s West Kordofan state, earlier on Monday after the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) abandoned their defensive positions.
Following the takeover, Youssef Aliyan, head of the West Kordofan Civil Administration, announced the deployment of a specialized force, established in coordination with RSF leadership, to secure the oilfield. Citing emergency laws, Aliyan issued a decree banning unauthorized armed groups and removing informal checkpoints, warning that the force would use “legitimate means” to enforce the measures.
Aliyan further stated that his administration was coordinating security and community peace efforts with officials in South Sudan’s neighbouring Unity State to maintain stability along the border.

[Darfur24] Military and civilian sources said on Sunday that the second-in-command of the Rapid Support Forces, Abdul Rahim Dagalo, held a meeting on Saturday with a number of civilian administrations west of Babnusa in West Kordofan State.
Sources told Darfur24 that the Rapid Support Forces leadership gave the Nazirs a number of cars, while promising to give the Umdas cars as well.
A local source stated that Abdul Rahim Dagalo vowed during his meeting that he would not return to Nyala until he had taken control of Heglig in West Kordofan, El Obeid in North Kordofan, and Dilling and Kadugli in South Kordofan.
Meanwhile, Darfur24 observed the Rapid Support Forces beginning extensive mobilization operations around Abu Zabad, where a group of combat vehicles was seen crossing north of Abu Zabad towards Al-Dubaibat.
A well-informed military source said that the Rapid Support Forces deployed in the areas of Al-Sunt and Abu Zabad moved with all their equipment towards Al-Dubaibat.
These moves would tighten the noose around areas in South Kordofan, where Dilling is about 57 km away from Dubeibat.

Allegations of harassment and extortion by rogue vigilante members in parts of northern Nigeria are provoking apprehension about their unintended role in fueling insecurity and banditry, residents and victims say.
In a recent incident, a Fulani man, whose location was withheld for security reasons, narrated how he was attacked by local vigilantes after failing to pay an extortion demand of N10,000. The victim explained that he had just purchased a motorcycle and could only offer N2,000.
“Immediately one of them became furious and started beating me,” he said. “Others joined in, beating me into a coma. They also stole my N40,000 and a power bank.”
The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, treated, and discharged. He reported the incident to the relevant authorities, but no action was taken, and neither his money nor the stolen item was returned. He said the vigilante members continue to mock him when he passes by, highlighting a lack of accountability.
The rogue activities by self-styled vigilantes risk undermining public confidence in law enforcement and may encourage criminality. “When citizens see that those who enforce law with impunity go unpunished, it can fuel retaliatory crimes and strengthen the cycle of banditry,” an expert said.
No concrete actions has been taken to curb such abuses and or enforcement of accountability among security auxiliaries.

They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The legitimate Yemeni government has accused the them of having ties to the Iranian government. Honest they did. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews They like shooting off... ummm... missiles that they would have us believe they make at home in their basements. On the plus side, they did murder Ali Abdullah Saleh, which was the only way the country was ever going to be rid of him... alliance.
A Yemeni government official said that the Saudi-led coalition didn’t issue required permissions for flights to or from Yemen, briefly halting flights to and from the southern city of Aden — the seat of the internationally recognized government.
The official described the move as a "Saudi message" to the separatist Southern Transitional Council, following its latest takeover of areas across southern Yemen, including much of the sprawling oil-rich province of Hadhramaut, which borders Saudi Arabia ...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula, largely made up of sand and oil rigs. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual haj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. Formerly dictatorial and steeped in Olde Tyme Religion, deferring to Salafist holy men on all issues, it has now done a 180 and is making a serious effort to modernize, so as not to be left in the sand by its Gulf Arab neighbors. The holy men have been shoved to the background and the nation is now still dictatorial but somewhat rational. That doesn't make them trustworthy, but it's a start... . The escalation could lead to Yemen being split into two states after more than three decades of unification.
The move was later reversed, allowing flight operations in Aden airport, where hundreds of passengers were stranded for hours, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to brief the media.
An News Agency that Dare Not be Named journalist at the airport said that workers have begun processing passengers of a Cairo-bound flight that was supposed to take off early Monday.
Since the entry of a Saudi-led coalition into Yemen’s war in 2015, the coalition has controlled the country’s airspace. Saudi Arabia didn’t acknowledge closing Yemen’s airspace on Monday.
UAE-BACKED COUNCIL EXPANDS CONTROL
The Southern Transitional Council, or STC — an umbrella of gangs trained and financed by the UAE — has expanded its control over Yemen’s south earlier this month. They seized control of Seiyun in Hadhramaut, including crucial oil fields and energy installations following brief festivities with the Yemeni military, and allied tribes.
Forces of the secessionist group were deployed across the strategic Wadi Hadramout ...the formerly independent Qu'aiti state and sultanate, annexed by Communist South Yemen in 1968, encompassing a region along the Gulf of Aden, extending eastwards to the borders of the Dhofar region of Oman. The people are called Hadhramis and speak Hadhrami Arabic. The city Tarimis is estimated to contain the highest concentration of descendants of the Prophet Muhammad (PTUI) anywhere in the world, approximately seven in every square yard... area, which includes major urban centers and military bases, according to STC-allied media. They took over the presidential palace and the international airport in Seiyun last week, and advanced to the province of Mahra, which borders Oman, the group said.
STC hoisted the flag of South Yemen over government buildings across the country’s south including on the border crossing with Oman. Images circulated on STC-allied media showed the South Yemen flag, with its light blue chevron and a red star, flying over government buildings and schools in the south.
The separatists enjoy loyalty through much of southern Yemen and have repeatedly pushed to break up Yemen into two countries, as it was between 1967 and 1990.
Hundreds of STC supporters erupted into the streets in Aden to call for the establishment of an independent state in the south. The demonstrators raised the flag of South Yemen, and pictures of Aidarous al-Zubaidi, the STC leader, who is also vice president of the country. There were also protests in Hadramout.
"It’s the summit day, the day of great triumph ... when we liberated all regions of the south," said Mohammed al-Zaher, a Yemeni resident while flying the flag of South Yemen, which was known as the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen.
They vowed to stay in the streets until the declaration of the south’s independence, and on Monday, a group of demonstrators were seen setting up a protest camp in the district of Khor Maksar.
STC forces seized the presidential palace in Aden over the weekend, forcing presidential guards to vacate the facility, according to the government official.
The STC sought to portray its military advances as necessary to restore stability in the region, and to fight the Iran-backed Houthis, al-Qaeda and the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems.... group. It said that Hadhramaut Valley has turned into a "platform for smuggling operations" for the Houthis and "hotbeds" for al-Qaeda and IS hard boys, and that its operations there came after "the exhaustion of all options proposed in recent years to restore stability."
The chairman of the ruling Presidential Council, Rashad al-Alimi, meanwhile, on Sunday called for the Emirati-backed forces to withdraw from areas they recently seized in Hadhramaut and Mahra.
"We categorically reject any unilateral measures that would undermine the legal status of the state, harm the public interest, or create a parallel reality," he said in a statement following his meeting with diplomats from the United States, United Kingdom and La Belle France, in Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh.
’MAJOR SHIFT’
The STC’s latest escalation was a "major shift," which will have regional repercussions, with the UAE appearing to be "the main winner," through expanding its influence in Yemen, said Ahmed Nagi, a senior Yemen analyst at the International Crisis Group, a Brussels-based think tank.
"This changes the balance of power in Yemen," he said. "The key question now is how Saudi Arabia will respond, given the direct implications for its national security."
The UAE’s support for the secessionists has threatened the Saudi-led coalition fighting against the Houthis for more than a decade. The UAE is part of the coalition.
Yemen’s war began in 2014, when the Houthis swept down from their northern stronghold and seized the capital, Sanaa, along with much of the country’s north. In response, the Saudi-led coalition intervened in 2015 to try to restore the internationally recognized government to power.

An Arab Israeli teenager from the mixed Jewish-Arab city of Ramle was shot and killed by Israel Defense Forces soldiers in the West Bank on Sunday, after allegedly throwing stones at motorists along the highway.
A second Paleostinian suspect was critically injured and later died of his wounds in Israeli custody.
Soldiers of the Paratroopers Brigade’s 890th Battalion were on patrol near the Paleostinian town of Azzun, east of Qalqilya, on Sunday evening, when the IDF said they identified three suspects hurling stones at the highway.
The soldiers opened fire, killing one suspect and wounding a second. The third suspect was detained and taken for questioning, the IDF said.
The PA’s official WAFA news agency reported that the three suspects had themselves been traveling in a car along the Nablus-Qalqilya road at the time.
The Arab Israeli teenager, identified as 19-year-old Moamen Abu Riyash, is originally from Ramle, in central Israel, but had been living in Qalqilya with his family in recent months, according to the Ynet news outlet.
His relatives denied on Monday that Abu Riyash had been involved in throwing stones, and demanded a transparent investigation into the circumstances of his death.
"He wasn’t throwing stones and wasn’t participating in it. Other people were throwing stones and then the shooting started, and the bullets hit him," they told Ynet. "We demand a commission of inquiry that will reveal the truth."
The Paleostinian Authority Health Ministry announced on Monday that the second suspect, Baraa Bilal Issa Qablan, 21, had died in Israeli custody after sustaining serious gunshot wounds.
The Paleostinian Red Islamic Thingy charged that its ambulances were initially blocked by the IDF from reaching the scene, delaying medics from treating Qablan’s wounds.
Both his body and Abu Riyash’s body remained in Israel’s possession on Monday.
In a separate incident on Sunday night, the IDF said a Paleostinian suspect tried to ram soldiers with a vehicle in the West Bank town of Burqin.
The military said that the soldiers, who were carrying out a raid in the town, fired at the vehicle, which then expeditiously departed at a goodly pace.
It said security forces were "working to locate the terrorist."
The incidents came a day after an attempted ramming near a checkpoint in the West Bank city of Hebron. The would-be attacker was shot and killed by soldiers of the Paratroopers Brigade, along with an uninvolved Paleostinian civilian.
Violence in the West Bank has surged since Hamas ..the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood,... ’s attack on Israel in October 2023. According to the Paleostinian Authority, over 1,000 Paleostinians have been killed by Israeli forces or settlers since then. The IDF has said that most of those killed were button men, rioters clashing with troops or Death Eaters carrying out attacks.
The same source says six people were wounded in a strike on a tent belonging to displaced people on the Hamas-controlled side of Gaza City’s Shejaiya neighborhood.
The Palestinian Authority’s official news agency WAFA also reports a man killed in a drone strike on western Deir el-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip. The area is also on the Hamas side of the so-called Yellow Line.
The IDF confirms carrying out the strike in Deir al-Balah but offers no immediate comment on the reported strike in Jabalia.
“The terrorist was struck in order to remove the threat to IDF troops deployed in the central Gaza Strip in accordance with the [ceasefire] agreement,” the military says.
Palestinian media reports several casualties in the strike.
The M-16 was found by reservists of the Carmeli Brigade at a booby-trapped site in the Strip’s north, following intelligence indicating that the weapon was stored there, the military says.

Formerly dictatorial and steeped in Olde Tyme Religion, deferring to Salafist holy men on all issues, it has now done a 180 and is making a serious effort to modernize, so as not to be left in the sand by its Gulf Arab neighbors. The holy men have been shoved to the background and the nation is now still dictatorial but somewhat rational. That doesn't make them trustworthy, but it's a start...
