[FoxNews] House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, called on the Department of Justice on Wednesday to prosecute one of former special counsel Jack Smith’s lead attorneys, accusing him of obstructing a congressional investigation.
Jordan said in the 19-page referral that Thomas Windom, a veteran federal prosecutor who was fired in the second Trump administration, declined to answer dozens of questions from committee staff after meeting with them twice behind closed doors this year.
Windom cited his Fifth Amendment right and federal rules surrounding grand jury secrecy, among other reasons, for refusing to answer questions. Jordan said he was dissatisfied with those reasons and that at least one other similarly situated prosecutor, J.P. Cooney, had been more candid with his committee, signaling Windom was withholding more than he needed to.
"Windom’s improper refusal to answer nearly all questions during his deposition obstructed the Committee’s fact-finding," Jordan wrote. "As a senior assistant to Special Counsel Jack Smith, Windom possesses unique, firsthand information about the work of that Office. Yet, despite being given express authorization by DOJ on two separate occasions, Windom declined to answer questions during his deposition about topics necessary and relevant to the Committee’s inquiry."
MIAMI (Ay-Pee) — U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick of Florida has been indicted on charges accusing her of stealing $5 million in federal disaster funds and using some of the money to aid her 2021 campaign, the Justice Department said Wednesday.
The Democrat is accused of stealing Federal Emergency Management Agency overpayments that her family health care company had received through a federally funded COVID-19 vaccination staffing contract, federal prosecutors said. A portion of the money was then funneled to support her campaign through candidate contributions, prosecutors allege.
"Using disaster relief funds for self-enrichment is a particularly selfish, cynical crime," Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement. "No one is above the law, least of all powerful people who rob taxpayers for personal gain. We will follow the facts in this case and deliver justice."
A phone message left at Cherfilus-McCormick’s Washington office was not immediately returned.
Cherfilus-McCormick was first elected to Congress in 2022 in the 20th District, representing parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties, in a special election after Rep. Alcee Hastings died in 2021.
In December 2024, a Florida state agency sued a company owned by Cherfilus-McCormick’s family, saying it overcharged the state by nearly $5.8 million for work done during the pandemic and wouldn’t give the money back.
The Florida Division of Emergency Management said it made a series of overpayments to Trinity Healthcare Services after hiring it in 2021 to register people for COVID-19 vaccinations. The agency says it discovered the problem after a single $5 million overpayment drew attention.

Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-Fla.) was hit with a federal indictment Wednesday, accusing her of stealing $5 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funds to support her 2021 congressional campaign.
Cherfilus-McCormick, who has been under investigation by the House Ethics Committee ...think of a nudibranch pretending to be a vertebrate... since December 2023, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Miami and faces up to 53 years in prison if convicted.

The Justice Department alleges that Cherfilus-McCormick, 46, and several co-defendants, including her brother, Edwin Cherfilus, 51, "conspired to steal" an overpayment of $5 million in FEMA funds their family health-care company received in July 2021 as part of a COVID-19 vaccination staffing contract.
The defendants allegedly routed the funds "through multiple accounts to disguise its source" and used "a substantial portion of the misappropriated funds ... as candidate contributions" to Cherfilus-McCormick’s 2021 congressional campaign.
Cherfilus-McCormick and another co-defendant, Nadege Leblanc, 46, further schemed to utilize "straw donors" to contribute the stolen money to the Florida Democrat’s campaign, according to prosecutors.
The congresswoman and her tax preparer, David K. Spencer, 41, are also charged with conspiring to file a false federal tax return for allegedly falsely marking political spending and other personal expenses as business deductions — and inflating Cherfilus-McCormick’s charitable contributions to ease her tax obligations.
"Today’s indictment shows no one is above the law," US Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones of the Southern District of Florida said in a statement. "This indictment reflects our Office’s commitment to follow the facts, apply the law, and protect the American taxpayer.
"Public money belongs to the American people," he added. "When FEMA funds are diverted for personal or political gain, it erodes trust and harms us all."
Cherfilus-McCormick was first elected to serve Florida’s 20th District in Congress in 2022, replacing the late Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.), who died in 2021.

[The74] Illinois’s second-largest teachers union is pushing lawmakers to impose new taxes on billionaires and wealthy corporations to help close school budget deficits. The move comes as Stacy Davis Gates, president of the Chicago Teachers Union and an advocate for the tax increases, becomes president of the Illinois Federation of Teachers.
"Here’s the punchline: We have to tax the rich," Davis Gates said at an Oct. 29 rally in Springfield, Illinois. "It is not because we just think that they’re not doing enough, it’s because we do our fair share and then some, and we need a little more help. It’s fair."
The state’s education funding formula was revised in 2017 with an infusion of money designed to ensure districts reach at least 90% of adequate funding levels by 2027. A recent advocacy report found that while this change improved some school budgets, districts won’t reach full funding until at least 2038, "leaving an entire generation of students without access to an adequately funded education."
"We need our Illinois lawmakers to deliver — they have already promised us those funds but they have not delivered," said Cyndi Oberle-Dahm, the statewide union’s executive vice president. "Over one-third of Illinois school districts are funded at 76% or less. The only way we are going to fix this is to have a new revenue structure."
The Illinois Federation of Teachers — which has 103,000 members and more than 200 chapters including the Chicago Teachers Union — said in a statement that the lack of adequate resources has caused districts to struggle with meeting legal requirements for special education, keeping class sizes manageable and recruiting and retaining staff.
While there are no policy proposals for taxing the wealthy on the table in Illinois, the union argues that the state could pursue something like Massachusetts’ millionaire’s tax to help fund schools. The law requires an additional 4% levy paid by anyone earning more than $1 million annually. Massachusetts accrued almost $3 billion from the tax this past fiscal year.

Massachusett's Million income tax is relatively new. It became law in 2022 and the first year it was effective was, I think, calendar 2023 payable in 2024.
Also, it is on top of the 5% State income tax and a 6% sales tax (groceries exempt) and extra taxes on alcohol, satellite TV, sports betting, insurance premiums and (believe it or not) burial caskets.

This kind of incremental edging to erode the legitimate Executive Authority of the Trump Presidency is far more damaging than most realize. This is no longer about a loyal political opposition party or free speech, this is seditious and feels like suborning mutiny. We cannot allow the slippery-slope erosion of something so fundamental as the institution of iron-clad, civilian control of the military by duly elected Presidents. To invite widespread uncertainty about what is a legal order across the ranks is a corrosive cancer and harmful to discipline and unit cohesion.

On NPR just now, they were freaking out that Trump is calling for the murder of elected Democratic officials. Oh noes! But once they got past all the hair-on-fire talk, what he apparently said was that the penalty for treason is hanging. Nothing new there, rather like the idea that the military should not obey illegal orders. But to go from there to say Trump was calling for the deaths of Democrats seems to imply the Dems *were* advocating insurrection and treason, despite their carefully worded and legally vetted rhetoric.

Re:#5 - Some issues are universal... if a state outlaws ownership of any firearm, the court should hold all citizens are covered by the decision rather than ruling that only the plaintiffs can get relief. The problem is where you draw the line.
