Anti-Islam activists and pro-Muslim counter-protesters clashed on Tuesday in Dearborn, Michigan, prompting a heavy police presence.
Dearborn, home to one of the largest Muslim populations in the country, has recently become a target for activists who accuse it of operating under "Sharia law," according to MLive.
The clash began when Jake Lang, who participated in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, arrived on Michigan Avenue and attempted to burn a Quran, the outlet reported.
Lang held up a lighter attempting to light the religious text on fire, but counter-protesters knocked it from his hands.
Later, Lang slapped the Quran with a slab of bacon before a counter-protester grabbed the book and took off with it.
Lang and his group later marched toward City Hall ahead of the City Council meeting Tuesday night.
Police maintained a perimeter on the sidewalks and along Michigan Avenue, intervening briefly when the clash escalated following Lang’s attempted burning of the book.
One person was seen being arrested at City Hall, according to MLive. No injuries were reported.
The chair of the Michigan Democratic Party, Curtis Hertel, condemned the attempted burning of the Quran.
"Attempting to burn a religious document is an unacceptable act of hate," Hertel said in a statement. "Dearborn is a beloved, multicultural city with tens of thousands of people who are cherished friends, family members, and neighbors."
Michigan gubernatorial candidate Anthony Hudson, a Republican, walked with supporters along the sidewalk as part of a demonstration that appeared unconnected to Lang's, according to MLive.
Hudson had initially planned a protest in Dearborn, calling it an "American Crusade" against "Muslim infiltration" and "Sharia Law," according to a news release from the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
But after visiting three mosques in the area, Hudson said there are many false and misleading narratives about Dearborn being spread and that all he found from Muslims in Dearborn was hospitality, according to the release. He also said he was opposed to outsiders traveling to Dearborn with plans to burn the Quran.
"We welcome Mr. Hudson’s remorse for his admitted fearmongering against the Dearborn community and American Muslims in general," CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid said in the release. "We invite him to further discussions to learn about the Islamic faith and what Muslims generally believe counter to false narratives and misinformation perpetuated by those with political agendas."
In response to Hudson’s change of heart, Lang spray-painted the word "cuck" on his campaign bus in Dearborn, criticizing him for "selling out," MLive reported.

[IsraelTimes] The teen, one of three convicted for the crime, has prison term cut from nine to seven years for incident last year that drew widespread outcry
A French court has reduced the sentence of one of the teenagers convicted in the antisemitic gang rape of a 12-year-old Jewish girl outside Gay Paree in 2024, shortening his nine-year sentence by two years.
The crime in June 2024 drew widespread outcry in La Belle France as an example of rising antisemitism in the country, and prompted protests. It was broadly condemned by French politicians, including President Emmanuel Macron, who denounced the "scourge of antisemitism."
Three boys were convicted in connection with the rape, and two were sentenced this June to prison terms of nine and seven years, respectively. Neither of them appealed their sentences.
Now, the teen rapist who received the longest sentence has had his prison term reduced by the Versailles Court of Appeal to seven years to match the other teen’s sentence, according to French outlets. Both were 13 at the time of the crime.
"The court took into account the entire case, as required by law: the facts, their seriousness, but also the minor’s personality and the need to prepare for his future reintegration," his lawyer, Melody Blanc, said in a statement reported by Le Monde.
She argued that the shorter punishment was "fair, proportionate, and in accordance with fundamental legal principles."
What about the reintegration of the preadolescent girl they raped? Who is reconsidering her life sentence?
The girl’s ex-boyfriend, who was also convicted, was 12 at the time and could not be sentenced to jail due to his age. He was placed in closed foster care for five years, according to reports.
The three boys dragged the girl into a shed where they beat her and forced her to have sex while uttering death threats and antisemitic remarks, according to the charges.
The victim’s lawyers, Muriel Ouaknine-Melki and Oudy Bloch, lauded her "courage" in a statement, and said: "The most important thing is that she succeeded in bringing the perpetrators of her assault to justice and that two of them are incarcerated."
Germany's interior minister Alexander Dobrindt on Wednesday backed Berlin’s decision to strip a man of his citizenship for supporting Hamas, saying naturalized citizens should forfeit their nationality when they are found not to uphold German values.
German media reports that the Syrian man who came to Berlin as a young child posted a photo on Instagram one day after his naturalization showing two Hamas fighters, with the caption “Heroes of Palestine.”
Berlin’s immigration office became aware of the case through security agencies and believes it was deceived, as he had declared his loyalty to German values, the media reports.
Since the reform of Germany’s nationality law in June 2024, naturalization applicants must declare their commitment to the free democratic basic order and to Germany’s special historical responsibility, in particular for the protection of Jewish life.

Ship-tracking data analyzed by The News Agency that Dare Not be Named showed the Talara traveling away from Iran.
On Friday, Iran’s military seized the vessel as it traveled through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf through which 20% of all oil traded passes. The ship had been traveling from Ajman, United Arab Emirates, onward to Singapore.
The US Navy has blamed Iran for a series of limpet mine attacks on vessels that damaged tankers in 2019, as well as for a fatal drone attack on an Israeli-linked oil tanker that killed two European crew members in 2021.
In May 2022, Iran took two Greek tankers and held them until November of that year, and seized the Portuguese-flagged and Israel-affiliated fat merchantman MSC Aries in April 2024.

Iranian scientists with ties to the regime made a secret trip late last year to Russia, where they met with military experts and may have sought to advance nuclear weapons work, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday.
Citing various documents it had obtained, the newspaper said the visiting scientists were connected to institutions previously implicated in nuclear work, and that the visit — on November 7-11, 2024 — was arranged by an organization serving as a front for Iran’s Organization of Defensive Innovation and Research (SPND), the military body Western officials believe is behind Iran’s nuclear weapons research efforts.
The Financial Times said the visit was the second last year, and included meetings with the sanctioned Russian company Laser Systems, which develops lasers for civilian and military use.
In addition, Andrei Savin, a former technical director at Laser Systems and now a professor at Baltic State Technical University — a Russian military tech school — traveled in February this year to Tehran, where he met officials believed to be linked to SPND, and also representatives from DamavandTec, considered a front company for SPND, the report said. In October, the US sanctioned DamavandTec and its CEO, Ali Kalvand, accusing them of trying to obtain items "applicable to the development of nuclear bombs."

Former CIA analyst Jim Lamson, now a senior research associate at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, told The Financial Times it appears that the Iranian group was "seeking laser technology and expertise that could help them validate a nuclear weapon design without conducting a nuclear explosive test."
In August, The Financial Times reported on a previous trip by Iranian nuclear scientists to view Russian facilities working on technologies relevant to nuclear weapons production.
According to that report, which was based on various official letters, travel documents, and corporate records, Kalvand and four of his employees traveled to Moscow on August 4, 2024, claiming to be employees of a Tehran-based consulting firm. However,
you can observe a lot just by watching... the report said, they all entered Russia on diplomatic passports, issued just weeks before the trip.
During their time in Moscow, The Financial Times said the nuclear scientists visited a Russian scientific institution that produces dual-use technologies, which have both civilian applications and are related to nuclear weapons research.
The newspaper noted that it was unable to identify the specific technologies that Iran was seeking from the Russian facilities, but said that one of the Iranian scientists, Soroush Mohtashami, is an expert on neutron generators — a component that can trigger detonation in some nuclear weapons.
In a letter Kalvand sent to Russian scientist Oleg Maslennikov ahead of the visit, he said that the purpose of the trip would be "to discuss and agree on technical and production aspects of electronic device development," the FT reported, and "to consider general potential paths for expanding scientific co-operation."
According to documents reviewed by the newspaper, the visit by the Iranian scientists also had a secondary purpose — acquiring radioactive materials.
In May 2024, the report said, Kalvand sent a letter to a Russian supplier of nuclear isotopes, in which he requested three radioactive isotopes, for research purposes, in unspecified quantities: tritium, stronium-90, and nickel-63.
The three isotopes all play different roles in the production and testing of nuclear weapons. However,
you can observe a lot just by watching... the FT said it found no evidence that Kalvand ever received the isotopes he was seeking.
[NAHARNET] Former Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblat voiced Wednesday his support to Lebanese Army chief Rodolphe Haykal after U.S. senators harshly criticized him.
A scheduled visit of Haykal to the U.S. was cancelled Tuesday after U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham posted on the X platform that Haykal is "a giant setback for efforts to move Lebanon forward because of a reference to Israel as the enemy and his weak almost non-existent effort to disarm Hezbollah."
Another senator said that Haykal is "shamefully directing blame at Israel" instead of seizing the opportunity to free Lebanon "from Iran-backed Hezbollah terrorists".
These posts came after the Lebanese Army condemned Israel's attacks on Lebanon and accused it of violating Lebanon's sovereignty and obstructing the deployment of the army in south Lebanon.
Jubmlat described Haykal as a patriotic person and stressed the importance of respecting the ceasefire agreement, extending the state's authority over all Lebanese territories, halting Israeli violations, and liberating the Lebanese prisoners.

''Merely responding with reactions that fall short of addressing the aggression will only lead to further attacks and massacres,'' Hezbollah warned.
It added that "national duty requires taking a firm and unified stance in confronting the crimes of this enemy and deterring its aggression by all possible means, in addition to adhering to all elements of strength that Lebanon possesses, as they are the only guarantee for thwarting the enemy's plans and protecting Lebanon's sovereignty and security."
