Khas Kunar or Sarkani (Sarkano) District (Pashto: خاص کونړ ولسوالۍ, Persian: ولسوالی خاص کنر) is the largest district in the Kunar Province, Afghanistan. It is situated in the southern part of the province and borders Nangarhar Province to the south and Pakistan to the east.
[Persecution.org] Armed Fulani militias carried out coordinated attacks on several Christian villages in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau state on Oct. 14, leaving at least 13 people dead and several others injured.
The assailants, reportedly motivated by an extremist ideology, targeted Rawuru, Tatu, and Lawuru villages — areas predominantly inhabited by Christians. The attackers also stole nearly 40 cows and caused widespread destruction of farmlands.
Eyewitnesses from the mission center in Rawuru reported that the gunmen invaded their compound around nightfall, opening fire on residents who had gathered for evening prayers. Two members of the mission center were killed on the spot, while several others managed to escape into the nearby bushes. The attackers later advanced toward Tatu village, where ten additional people were killed in what appeared to be a deliberate attempt to terrorize Christians.
In the Lawuru community, located a few miles away, two more residents were shot dead, and their livestock was taken by the assailants. Locals said the attackers had earlier issued threats and warnings about their intentions, which were reported to security forces. However, no preventive measures were taken before the assault occurred.
“We informed the authorities days before the attack that we were under threat, but no action was taken,” said a church leader from Rawuru who asked not to be named. “Now, our brothers and sisters are dead, and our homes are destroyed.”
The violence extended to other nearby villages, including Rachas in Heipang District and Rawuru in Fan District, both under Barkin Ladi LGA. According to local sources, the simultaneous nature of the attacks suggested a high level of coordination and planning. By dawn, 13 people were confirmed dead, while several others sustained gunshot wounds. Crops, barns, and houses were set ablaze, further displacing families who have now sought refuge in nearby communities.
The Executive Chairman of Barkin Ladi LGA, Hon. Stephen Gyang Pwajok, confirmed the attacks during the mass burial of the victims held in Rachas village the following day. Addressing mourners, Pwajok described the attacks as unprovoked and condemned the killings. He emphasized that the perpetrators appeared to be working with the intention of displacing indigenous Christian communities from their ancestral lands.
Da Paul Tadi-Tok, the district leader of Heipang, also spoke at the burial, voicing deep concern about the frequency of attacks targeting Christian farming communities in the area. He called on the government to implement strict regulations that would prevent non-resident herders from grazing within settled communities. He said that such measures could help identify infiltrators who often disguise themselves as herders to launch attacks.
Tadi-Tok further appealed for the revitalization of Operation Rainbow, Plateau state’s community-based security initiative, arguing that local defense mechanisms remain the most effective in responding swiftly to distress calls in remote areas.
Brigadier General Shippi Gakji Goshwe (Rtd.), the security adviser to Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang and coordinator of Operation Rainbow, assured residents that the government was intensifying its efforts to strengthen local security structures. He announced that recruits were undergoing training to support conventional security agencies in responding to rural violence.
Despite these assurances, fear remains high across Barkin Ladi and surrounding LGAs, where Christian villagers have repeatedly faced attacks attributed to armed Fulani militias. During the past year, similar incidents have been recorded in Mangu, Riyom, and Bokkos LGAs, resulting in hundreds of deaths and large-scale displacement.
Local community leaders continue to express frustration over the lack of accountability and timely intervention by security forces, especially given that many of the attacks are preceded by public threats. Churches in the region have appealed for international attention, calling on humanitarian organizations to support displaced families and ensure that justice is pursued for the victims.
For now, communities across central Plateau remain on edge, bracing for further attacks as the rainy season draws to a close — a period when many farmers are traditionally targeted while harvesting their crops. The recurring violence has left many Christians questioning their safety and the future of their ancestral homeland.

Jama'atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'awati wal-Jihad (JAS) — or ''People Committed to the Propagation of the Prophet's Teachings and Jihad'' — has long terrorized communities in and around the Niger State community of Shiroro, which is 128 kilometers northwest of Abuja, the national capital.
In June 2024, the group killed 20 young men, beheading 10 of them, in an attack on a Shiroro village. Residents were forced to hold the severed heads as the holy warriors took pictures and shot video. In July 2022, at least 30 Nigerian Soldiers were killed in an ambush after the holy warriors attacked a mine in Shiroro. A local leader told Rooters that the holy warriors also killed seven coppers and eight civilians and kidnapped several Chinese workers.
About 5,000 Shiroro residents were displaced by violence over a three-day period in 2021. At the time, Sen. Mohammed Sani Musa, representing Niger East in the National Assembly, referred to the group as ''heartless, venomous and hydraheaded'' terrorists.
In Shiroro, JAS kidnaps women and girls to be gang-raped and forced into marriage with its fighters. It recruits boys into its fold and brainwashes them into killing in the name of religion. JAS is known to extort money from those it views as unbelievers.
However,

JAS thrives on ideological fluidity and predation, unlike the doctrinal and tighter command discipline of rival Boko Haram faction Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. JAS is led by Abubakar Saidu, or ''Sadiku,'' a Borno State native sent to Niger State in 2014 by late Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau ....the lunatic leader of Boko Haram who was reported dead at least eleven times, pledged his body and soul to ISIS, told his fighters to hang it up once or twice, and been fired by the Caliph and refused to step down. Last seen in 2017, sneaking into Cameroon while wearing a burka. Eventually the got him, or so they say.... . Sadiku gradually embedded himself in the Alawa Forest Reserve area and began coordinating with local Fulani ... a peculiarly brutal tribe of Moslem herdsmen infesting Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and probably other places that are light on law and order and heavy on tribal identity... communities. By 2021, Boko Haram had hoisted its flag in the Shiroro community of Kawuri. Under Sadiku, JAS has blended jihadism with local Fulani banditry. [M.NAHARNET] Suspected Boko Haram gunmen have raided the village of Nigeria's army chief in northeast Borno state, killing two residents and setting fire to several homes, residents said Tuesday.
Dozens of Boko Haram fighters stormed Buratai, the native village of chief of army staff Major General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, around 7:00 pm (1800 GMT) on Monday night, shooting indiscriminately and forcing residents to flee into the bush.
The assault was followed by a failed suicide attack at a military checkpoint in the town of Biu, 25 kilometers (15 miles) away, residents and vigilantes assisting the military in fighting Boko Haram said.
The raid in Buratai follows a similar Boko Haram attack in April where 20 people were killed and more than half of the village was razed to the ground, including the army chief's own home.
In Monday's attack, witnesses said the insurgents seized two male residents and slit their throats before setting fire to homes.
"They slaughtered two people they apprehended while trying to flee the village and burnt more than 30 homes," Buratai resident Tanimu Mudi told AFP.
Yuram Bura, a vigilante working with the Nigerian military, confirmed the raid, saying: "There was a an attack on Buratai yesterday (Monday) night by Boko Haram gunmen where they cut the throats of two people and burnt several homes."
On Tuesday, a failed suicide bomber injured a a female member of a local vigilante group that has been fighting Boko Haram alongside the military when he attempted to set off his vest at a security checkpoint outside Biu.
"The bomber's gait gave him away as he walked towards the security post because it was evident he was carrying something under his dress which raised our suspicion%u200E," local vigilante Babagana Maina told AFP.
"When he realized he had been exposed he detonated the explosives before reaching the security post, slightly injuring a female vigilante on her shoulder."
Biu, the largest town in southern Borno, 180 kilometers from Borno state capital Maiduguri, has been hit by several deadly suicide and bomb attacks %u200Etargeting markets and bus stations blamed on Boko Haram.

Three drones carrying explosive devices targeted a Baja California Attorney General’s Office facility in Tijuana on Wednesday night, prompting the U.S. Consulate in Tijuana to issue a security warning, authorities said.
No one was injured in the attack, believed to be the work of an organized crime group, Attorney General Maria Elena Andrade said at a midnight news conference.
The assault happened about 7 p.m. at a parking lot of the facility in Playas de Tijuana, a beach neighborhood just south of the border fence. The building is used by the attorney general’s anti-kidnapping unit. The improvised explosive devices, filled with nails and pieces of metal, caused some damage to the building and to employees’ vehicles, Andrade said.
Officials said they believe they know which group is behind the attack, but declined to name it or provide further details due to the ongoing investigation. No arrests have been made.
Andrade said she believes the attack may have been in response to arrests her office has made related to organized crime. She added that it might be the first time drones have been used to target any of their facilities in Baja California.
"My entire team is working with all the resources available to the state prosecutor’s office to ensure that this cowardly attack is not left unpunished," she said.
The case is being investigated as an act of terrorism, officials said.
Officials suspect that three explosive devices were dropped in the parking lot.
"It wasn’t an attack on the community," she said. "It was directed straight at the courtyard of our facilities because of the precision with which these devices can be operated."
The U.S. Consulate issued a security warning for U.S. citizens on Wednesday night. "Monitor local news and stay away from the area. Inform your friends and family of your status," the Consulate said in a post on social media.
Andrade said that her office had been in communication with the U.S. Consulate on Wednesday night.
There have been other attacks on attorney general officials in Baja California, including vehicles burned last month in Mesa de Otay and Playas de Tijuana.

In exchange, he was paid 10,000 euros ($11,700) from Russian intelligence and 0.17 bitcoin from Iranian intelligence, the court ruled Wednesday.
In its judgment made public Thursday, the Oslo court said the information was "of a nature that could be used for direct actions and physical attacks against the concerned individuals."

State television said a blast hit a bus on the road between the cities of Deir Ezzor and Mayadeen, some 50 kilometers (30 miles) away.

ISIS jihadists, once in control of large swaths of Iraq and Syria, were territorially defeated in Syria in 2019 in a battle spearheaded by the US-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) with support from an international coalition.
During Syria’s civil war, which erupted in 2011, ISIS carried out similar attacks on buses targeting the forces of former ruler Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad Oppressor of the Syrians and the Lebs... Since the new Islamist-led authorities took power after Assad’s December ouster, jihadist attacks on government-controlled areas have been scarce.
In May, ISIS claimed its first attack on the new forces, with the Observatory saying one member of Syrian army personnel was killed and three others maimed.
The following month, authorities accused ISIS of being behind a deadly suicide kaboom in a Damascus church that killed 25 people, though the group never grabbed credit.
