The Lod District Court on Sunday sentenced seven men to between 12 and 14 years in prison for their role in the death of Yigal Yehoshua in 2021 during a riot that took place during a short war in Gazoo that year.
The 56-year-old victim’s family demanded a harsher sentencing and will ask the State Prosecutor’s Office to appeal the ruling.
The seven men sentenced are five Lod residents — and Israeli citizens — Yusef al-Qadhayim, 21; Walid al-Qadhayim, 25; Karim Bahlul, 18; Iyad Marahla, 20; and Haled Hassouna, 51; along with two West Bank residents, Ahmad Danun, 25; and Kamel Deif Alla, 21, who were in Israel illegally at the time. The ages given are their ages at the time of the crime.
The seven were convicted in May this year on charges of causing injury with terrorist motivations and other crimes for their role in pelting Yehoshua’s car with rocks, bricks and other objects as the 56-year-old made his way home in Lod in May 2021. Yehoshua, who was hit in the head by a brick, was maimed and later succumbed to his wounds.
Like other mixed Jewish-Arab cities, Lod, just south of Tel Aviv, saw a series of violent mostly peaceful inter-communal disturbances that month following the May 10 outbreak of a conflict between Israel and Hamas ..one of the armed feet of the Moslem Brüderbund millipede,... in Gaza.
The seven men who were sentenced to prison on Sunday were originally charged with causing Yehoshua’s death, but due to "significant evidentiary problems" were convicted on the lesser charges in a plea bargain.
In handing down the sentences, the Lod court said the Arab assailants had been "triggered" by a rock-throwing incident committed by Jewish rioters in the city prior to the fatal attack on Yehoshua, and that they had not acted in a premeditated manner.
However,
a lie repeated often enough remains a lie... the court found that the attack on Yehoshua was carried out with "nationalistic motivations and as an act of terrorism."
Alongside the prison sentences, the court awarded Yehoshua’s family NIS 900,000 ($268,000) in compensation from the attackers.
The Ynet news site reported that people in the courtroom yelled out "not enough" when the sentence was read.
Irina Yehoshua, the victim’s widow, was quoted by Ynet as saying, "On the one hand I’m happy that it’s over... but unfortunately, the sentence handed down today is not enough, and our feeling is that the court was lenient with the murderers."
Tami Kalenberg-Levi, who Ynet said is representing the family on behalf of the governmental legal aid agency, told the news site that the family would request that the State Prosecutor’s Office appeal the ruling.
"This is not the punishment they were expecting," she said.
The May 2021 riots and war came after Israel moved to evict some 70 Paleostinians from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in East Jerusalem, to be replaced by right-wing Jewish Israelis.

An Israeli soldier was killed on Sunday after being hit by gunfire during what the military said was a car-ramming attack in the northern West Bank.
A Paleostinian suspect who carried out the attack at the Jit Junction — near the Paleostinian town of the same name and Israeli settlement of Kedumim — was rubbed out by troops, the Israel Defense Forces said.
The slain soldier in the incident was named as Staff Sgt. Inbar Avraham Kav, 20, of the Paratroopers Brigade’s 890th Battalion, from the northern town of Lotem.
Medical officials reported that he had sustained a severe head injury. Magen David Adom took him to Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva for treatment, where he succumbed to his wounds.
The incident began when a truck driven by the suspect allegedly accelerated toward Israeli troops at the junction, hitting Kav, before colliding with a vehicle, according to an IDF investigation. The soldiers then opened fire on the driver, killing him.
The military said that after being hit by the truck, the slain soldier was also hit by gunfire as the other troops opened fire on the attacker.

Witnesses and medics said Israeli tanks had deepened their incursions in the Sabra, Tel Al-Hawa, Sheikh Radwan and Al-Naser neighbourhoods, closing in on the heart and the western areas of Gaza City, where hundreds of thousands of people are sheltering.
The Israeli military launched its long-threatened ground offensive on Gaza City on September 16 after weeks of intensifying strikes on the urban centre, forcing hundreds of Palestinians to flee, although many still remain.
Hamas ..a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth",... claimed Sunday that it had lost contact with two hostages during Israeli operations in a pair of Gazoo City neighborhoods, as three Israel Defense Forces divisions moved deeper into the northern city in a bid to conquer it.
In a statement, the terror group’s al-Qassam Brigades armed wing said it had demanded that the IDF "withdraw to the south of Street Eight (one of the streets in Gaza City) and halt aerial sorties for 24 hours starting at 6 p.m. today so that attempts can be made to extract the prisoners (hostages)."
The statement’s apparent indication of the hostages’ exact location is unprecedented.
Both hostages were kidnapped in the Hamas onslaught of October 7, 2023, that sparked the war in Gaza. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum said in a statement that their families were working with authorities to review the Hamas statement, and asked that the names of their loved ones not be made public.
Terror groups in the Gaza Strip are holding 48 hostages, including 47 of the 251 kidnapped by Hamas-led faceless myrmidons on October 7, 2023. They include the bodies of at least 26 confirmed dead by the IDF. Twenty are believed to be alive, and there are grave concerns for the well-being of two others, Israeli officials have said. Among the bodies held by Hamas is also an IDF officer killed in Gaza in 2014.
The Hamas statement came after the IDF said the air force over the past day struck some 140 targets, including buildings used by terror groups, operatives, and other infrastructure, while medical sources in the Hamas-run Strip reported at least 77 killed by Israel over the past 24 hours.

Israel’s ground troops also pressed on in southern Gaza, with forces from the IDF’s Gaza Division killing terror operatives and destroying Hamas infrastructure, including surveillance equipment, in the Strip’s south, the military said.

Four people were taken hostage alive from the shelter, including Hersh Goldberg-Polin, and 16 were murdered. Seven managed to survive and were later rescued.
Hussein was also involved in attacks on troops during the war in Gaza, the IDF says. Attawi, the other Nukba commander involved in the attack on the Re’im shelter, was killed in an Israeli strike in October 2024.
GAZA CITY CLANS BOMBED AFTER REFUSING TO GOVERN ANTI-HAMAS ENCLAVE — REPORT
Israel recently approached two large Gaza City clans about forming anti-Hamas enclaves in the city, and, after being turned down, bombed homes that belong to them, according to a report in the Saudi daily Asharq al-Awsat on Sunday.
The outlet said the Shin Bet approached representatives of the Durmush and Bakr families, both of which have remained in Gaza City, about implementing a plan to divide the city into zones controlled by gangs supported by Israel. According to the report, which cited security sources and contacts on the ground in Gaza, the Durmush and Bakr families rejected the offer, which would have required them to fight Hamas and pass intelligence to Israel.
The proposed scheme appeared to be similar to a model implemented with gangs carving out anti-Hamas enclaves in Gaza’s south that claim support from Israel.
A member of the Bakr family, who asked not to be named, confirmed the details to the paper.
According to the sources cited by Asharaq al-Awsat, the families rejected the offer on Friday. On Saturday, Israel struck several houses belonging to members of the families in Gaza City, killing about 36 people, the report said.

On June 8, 2024, Israeli special forces from the Shin Bet and Israel Police’s elite Yamam unit raided an apartment belonging to Abdallah al-Jamal — Muhammad’s relative and a journalist — in Nuseirat and rescued the three hostages, in a mission later named Operation Arnon after the slain Yamam officer.
As the forces breached the building where the hostages were held, Muhammad al-Jamal shot Zmora fatally. Abdallah al-Jamal and other members of the al-Jamal family were killed during the raid, but not Muhammad.
Hostage Noa Argamani was also rescued in the operation from a separate nearby building.
Hamas’s government media office claimed at least 274 people were killed amid the operation, an unverified figure that also does not differentiate between combatants and civilians.
Alongside al-Jamal, the recent Israeli Air Force strike also killed Sari Idris Muhammad al-Aqrab, a Hamas terrorist who invaded Israel during the October 7 onslaught and was considered "close" to al-Jamal, the Shin Bet said.

Iran identified the executed man as Bahman Choobiasl, whose case wasn’t immediately known in Iranian media reports or to activists monitoring the death penalty in the Islamic Theocratic Republic. However,

Iran accused Choobiasl of meeting with officials from the Israeli spy agency Mosssd ...sees all, knows all, gets 'em all in the end... Iran’s Mizan news agency, which is the judiciary’s official mouthpiece, said Choobiasl worked on "sensitive telecommunications projects" and reported about the "paths of importing electronic devices."
Iran is known to have hanged nine people for espionage since its June war with Israel. The Israel Defense Forces conducted a sweeping assault on Iran’s top military leaders, nuclear scientists, uranium enrichment sites, and ballistic missile program. Jerusalem said the attack was necessary to prevent the Islamic Theocratic Republic from realizing its avowed plan to destroy the Jewish state, and that Tehran had been taking concrete steps toward assembling an atomic bomb.
Iran responded by firing missile barrages at Israeli cities and military sites.
Entangled in a decades-long shadow war with Israel, Iran has put to death many individuals it accuses of having links with the Mossad and facilitating its operations in the country.
Earlier this month, Iran executed Babak Shahbazi, who it alleged spied for Israel. Activists disputed that, saying Shahbazi was tortured into a false confession after writing a letter to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky offering to fight for Kyiv.
Iran has faced multiple nationwide protests in recent years, fueled by anger over the economy, demands for women’s rights and calls for the country’s theocracy to change.
In response to those protests and the June war, Iran has been putting prisoners to death at a pace unseen since 1988, when it executed thousands at the end of the Iran-Iraq war.
The Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights and the Washington-based Abdorrahman Boroumand Center for Human Rights in Iran put the number of people executed in 2025 at over 1,000, noting the number could be higher as Iran does not report on each execution.

The measures, which bar dealings linked to the Islamic republic's nuclear and ballistic missile activities, took effect overnight after Western powers triggered the so-called "snapback" mechanism under the 2015 nuclear accord.
"The reactivation of annulled resolutions is legally baseless and unjustifiable... all countries must refrain from recognising this illegal situation," the Iranian foreign ministry said in a statement.
"The Islamic Theocratic Republic of Iran will firmly defend its national rights and interests, and any action aimed at undermining the rights and interests of its people will face a firm and appropriate response," it added.
The return of the sanctions ends months of tense diplomacy aimed at reviving nuclear talks derailed since June, when Israeli and US forces bombed Iranian nuclear facilities.
