[RT] A curfew has been imposed in a region of Uzbekistan as the country’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev responded to unrest, acknowledging that people have been killed in festivities with police this week.
"Government buildings were attacked. Unfortunately, there were casualties among civilians and law enforcement officials," Mirziyoyev told local MPs in the city of Nukus on Sunday, the site of Friday’s riots.
The president did not specify how many people had bit the dust. The authorities had previously said a "criminal group" instigated street protests and attempted to seize power in Uzbekistan’s northwestern region of Karakalpakstan.
A one-month state of emergency came into effect in the region on Sunday, with a curfew fixed from 9pm to 7am. Other measures include a ban on protests and "restrictions on the freedom of movement," according to a document published on the president’s website.
The demonstrations ostensibly began after the government unveiled a plan to revoke Karakalpakstan’s autonomy as part of a package of constitutional amendments. Mirziyoyev, however, argued that the backlash was fueled by "misunderstood interpretations" of the proposed reform.
Mirziyoyev has promised that the status of Karakalpakstan will remain unchanged, and that the final draft of the amendments will be put to a referendum.
At the same time, the president warned of "harsh measures" against "those who try to disturb the peace, calm and public safety."

"The arrest of the duo is a big success for the security forces as a major conspiracy of Pakistan has been thwarted. I also came to know that he had shared the pictures of the BJP headquarters with his handlers across the border," he said. Raina said terror organisations, frustrated by BJP's expansion in Jammu and Kashmir, have repeatedly threatened him over in the past many years and since they failed to target him, they hatched a conspiracy to plant their activist in the BJP to target him and other leaders of the party.
However, he said BJP is determined to wipe-out Pakistan-sponsored terrorism from Jammu and Kashmir and "we will not be cowed down by threats or conspiracies". The BJP chief claimed he was also told by the security agencies that Shah was keeping a close watch on his movement in the twin districts of Rajouri and Poonch and was passing the information to his handlers in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
"I have full faith in the training, ability and courage of our police and security forces who are determined to root out terrorism. With the arrest of Shah and his associate, the Pakistani conspiracy to target me has failed," he said.
Reacting strongly, the Congress chief spokesperson said "this is for the first time that such a thing had happened (when an office bearer of a party is directly involved in terrorism." "BJP should answer to the nation about the presence of terrorists in their ranks holding important party positions. It is a very serious matter and a threat to the security of the nation," he said. Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and Director General of Police Dilbag Singh lauded the villagers for their courage and announced cash rewards for them.

A teenage Paleostinian shot Saturday by Israeli soldiers during festivities in the northern West Bank has died of his wounds, the Paleostinian Authority Health Ministry said Sunday.
Kamel Abdullah Alawneh, 17, was shot in the stomach and hand during fighting with Israeli soldiers outside a town near Jenin, PA health officials said.
According to both military and Paleostinian media accounts, Alawneh was shot while clashing with Israeli troops who set up a checkpoint at the entrance to the village of Jaba’.
The Israel Defense Forces said a Paleostinian hurled a Molotov cocktail at the soldiers, who fired at the suspect in response.
"A hit was identified," an IDF statement said. "The circumstances of the incident are being clarified."
No troops were maimed.

[Rudaw] A suspected Ottoman Turkish drone on Sunday targeted a base of the Syrian army in Tal Rifaat, northwestern Syria, injuring two regime soldiers, local media reported.
"A suicide drone belonging to the Ottoman Turkish army targeted a point of Damascus government forces in the Tal Rifaat district ... wounding two of its soldiers," Hawar News Agency (ANHA) reported.
ANHA added that the bombing also resulted in material damages.
