[MSN] A worker at a residential therapeutic school in Swansea, Massachusetts has died after she was allegedly assaulted by a student on Wednesday night.
Meadowridge Academy staff member Amy Morrell, 53, of Riverside, Rhode Island, was allegedly kicked in the chest by a 14-year-old female student resident.
WHAT HAPPENED AT MEADOWRIDGE ACADEMY?
The student was allegedly attempting to leave a dorm building without permission when the physical interaction occurred at approximately 6:55 p.m., according to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office.
Morrell and other staff were attempting to restrain the girl, according to investigators. Shortly after being kicked, Morrell collapsed. Other staff members began CPR and called 911.
Swansea police along with the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office responded to the school.
Morrell was taken to a local hospital overnight and was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon.
STUDENT CHARGED WITH ASSAULT AND BATTERY
"Based upon the initial investigation the juvenile was charged with Assault and Battery causing Serious Bodily Injury and was arraigned this morning in the Fall River Juvenile Court," the district attorney's office said. Her name has not been released.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
Meadowridge Academy is located on Stevens Road in Swansea. According to its website, it is a "therapeutic residential school providing comprehensive treatment to youth and young adults with mental health issues, behavioral difficulties, and complex trauma histories."
Swansea is a town in southeastern Massachusetts, about 50 miles from Boston.
Enrollment data published by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education said Meadowridge Academy had 35 total students for the 2024-25 school year.
The institution is operated by the Justice Resource Institute, a Massachusetts nonprofit that aims 'to pursue the social justice inherent in opening doors to opportunity.'
Morrell worked at the school as a direct care staff member.

"He is and will always be a part of KISS’s legacy," they added before sending condolences to Frehley’s estranged wife Jeanette Trerotola, his daughter Monique Frehley and "all those who loved him, including our fans around the world."
PEOPLE reached out to reps for Simmons and Stanley for comment.
Frehley's family announced his death in a statement shared with PEOPLE on Thursday, saying the rocker died earlier that day in Morristown, N.J., following a recent fall at his home.
"We are completely devastated and heartbroken. In his last moments, we were fortunate enough to have been able to surround him with loving, caring, peaceful words, thoughts, prayers and intentions as he left this earth," his family said.
"We cherish all of his finest memories, his laughter, and celebrate his strengths and kindness that he bestowed upon others. The magnitude of his passing is of epic proportions, and beyond comprehension. Reflecting on all of his incredible life achievements, Ace’s memory will continue to live on forever," the statement concluded.

Prominent members of the Young Republicans, a US political organization, trafficked in antisemitism and racism in a private group chat, Politico reported on Tuesday.
The leaked chat shows group members joking about killing people in gas chambers and a “Hitler aesthetic,” among other white supremacist references.
One group member said a subset of the organization would “vote for the most right-wing person” to lead the national group. “Great. I love Hitler,” responded Peter Giunta, a former leader of the New York State Young Republicans, according to the report.
One message from Giunta included a reference to a “fat stinky Jew,” the report said. Another read, “Everyone that votes no is going to the gas chamber.” Messages from other members also contained references to gas chambers, a suggestion that Jews were dishonest, jokes about rape and other racist and homophobic slurs.
Politico said the Telegram chats, obtained in a 2,900-page leak to the US-based publication, included messages sent between January and August from Young Republican leaders in New York, Kansas, Arizona and Vermont. Many of the anti-Jewish and other racist statements appeared to be jokes.
But the chats expose the insider discourse of some up-and-coming Republican activists, and have led people to be fired or have a job offer pulled, along with condemnations from prominent officials on both sides of the aisle. US Vice President JD Vance, however, has downplayed the controversy, and US President Donald Trump did not comment.
New York Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik, who is expected to run for governor and who has taken center-stage at congressional hearings on campus antisemitism, said she was “absolutely appalled” by the comments in the chat, calling them “heinous, antisemitic, racist and unacceptable.”
Prior to the Politico exposé, she had lauded Giunta for his “tremendous leadership” of the New York State Young Republicans.
Many messages in the chat concerned Giunta’s unsuccessful campaign this year to lead the Young Republican National Federation, an organization for Republicans aged 18-40 with individual chapters in many states. The group condemned the messages.
“We are appalled by the vile and inexcusable language revealed in the Politico article published today,” the group’s statement said. “Such behavior is disgraceful, unbecoming of any Republican, and stands in direct opposition to the values our movement represents.”
The statement added: “Those involved must immediately resign from all positions within their state and local Young Republican organizations. We must hold ourselves to the highest standards of integrity, respect and professionalism.”
But Vance has likened the chat, several of whose members are adults who worked for or serve as Republican officials, to a “college group chat.”
“By focusing on what kids are saying in a group chat — grow up, I’m sorry, focus on the real issues,” he said on Wednesday.
Other members of the chat, whose contents appear to have been leaked under pressure amid an intraparty rivalry, served in leadership positions in their state Young Republican organizations. They include Joe Maligno, who was the general counsel for the New York Young Republican group, and who once wrote, “Can we fix the showers? Gas chambers don’t fit the Hitler aesthetic.”
Samuel Douglass, a state senator from Vermont who leads the state’s Young Republicans chapter, once wrote, in a discussion about whether a woman was Indian, “She just didn’t bathe often.”
At another point, Douglass’ wife, Brianna, chided him for “expecting the Jew to be honest.”
Another member, Bobby Walker, who took over from Giunta as the New York state chapter’s chair, referred to the rape of Native American women as “epic.”
Other messages referenced neo-Nazi rhetoric, such as the number 1488, a trope referring to a 14-word white supremacist slogan and the phrase “Heil Hitler.”
Giunta also wrote, regarding an NBA game: “I’d go to the zoo if I wanted to watch monkey play ball.” On another occasion, Giunta wrote, after taking a flight, “If your pilot is a she and she looks ten shades darker than someone from Sicily, just end it there.”
Offensive slurs were used 251 times throughout the chat, Politico reported.
Some of those involved have lost their jobs, faced calls to resign, or seen a job offer rescinded.
Giunta was fired from his position as New York State Assembly member Michael Reilly’s chief of staff. Likewise, Maligno was fired from his job at the New York State Unified Court System, according to the Guardian, and Walker’s offer to manage New York State Senator Peter Oberacker’s congressional campaign was withdrawn.
Meanwhile, the Kansas chapter of the Young Republicans has been shut down.
Some of the participants in the chat have since apologized.
“There is no excuse for the language and tone in messages attributed to me. The language is wrong and hurtful, and I sincerely apologize,” Walker told Politico. “This has been a painful lesson about judgment and trust, and I am committed to moving forward with greater care, respect, and accountability in everything I say and do.”
Giunta told The New York Times, “I am so sorry to those offended by the insensitive and inexcusable language found within the more than 28,000 messages of a private group chat.”

[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] President Donald Trump has announced a deal that is set to slash the cost of fertility treatments for millions of Americans.
In a press conference from the Oval Office, the commander-in-chief said his administration had reached a deal with the US arm of German drugmaker Merck to cut the price of its in-vitro fertilization (IVF) medications by up to 84 percent.
Trump said he would also soon issue guidance encouraging employers to offer fertility benefits directly to their employees.
The president said: 'We’ll dramatically slash the cost of IVF and the treatment and many of the most common fertility drugs for countless millions of Americans.'
He added: 'This will make all fertility care far more affordable and accessible.
'The result will be healthier pregnancies, healthier babies and many more beautiful American children.'
Nearly 10million women in the US struggle to conceive, estimates suggest, while the average cost for one cycle of IVF is around $25,000, putting it out of reach for most couples.
At the same time, many couples seeking fertility treatments require multiple rounds of IVF in order to have a successful pregnancy.
In the US, about 432,000 IVF cycles were carried out in 2023, resulting in 95,860 babies, with about one in five cycles resulting in a live birth.
The president continued: 'As a result of these actions, the per cycle cost of drugs used in IVF will fall by an estimated 73 percent for American consumers, and the numbers are going to actually be very substantially higher as time goes by.'
The administration has made a deal with EMD Serono, the US arm of the drugmaker Merck, which is also a leading manufacturer of fertility drugs.
Under the agreement, the manufacturer will now sell its medications direct-to-consumer at lower prices via the federal website TrumpRx.
The lower price affects three major IVF drugs, with Merck saying patients will receive an overall discount of 84 percent.
Among the drugs that EMD Serono manufactures is Gonal-f, a medication used early in IVF cycles to stimulate the ovaries to release an egg.
According to GoodRx, the drug is priced at about $2,400 per dose out-of-pocket in the US. For comparison, in Europe, the price is around $300.
The deal also affects its drug Ovidrel, which is administered in IVF just before an egg is retrieved, and Cetrotide, which is used in the cycle to prevent the early release of an egg.
Trump said the FDA would also be working with EMD Serono to expedite approval of another one of its fertility drugs available in Europe called Pergoveris.
In IVF, this is used to stimulate the growth of follicles in women, or sacs that contain immature eggs.
Trump made the announcement today flanked by his Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy Junior, the head of the FDA Dr Marty Makary, the head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Dr Mehmet Oz, and others involved in the push to slash the cost of IVF.
It comes after the administration struck deals with pharmacy giants Pfizer and AstraZeneca over the past month to slash costs for consumers.
Under the deals, both manufacturers will now sell their drugs to Medicaid, the health insurance program for lower-income Americans, at the same price as in Europe, and also offer their drugs at 'most favoured nation' prices, the same price as that in developed nations, on a direct-to-consumer federal website called TrumpRx.
In return, both companies have been promised a three-year reprieve from tariffs, after the president threatened to impose a tariff of up to 15 percent on brand-name drugs from the European Union and 100 percent from other parts of the world.
Trump signed an executive order in February directing the government to expand access to IVF and reduce the costs of the popular fertility treatment.
During his campaign for the presidency last year, Trump pledged that, if elected, he would make IVF treatment free.

People are having babies when they're much older these days. Forty-year-old women are having babies. When you keep young people in school until they're in their mid-twenties it's kinda hard for them to get married and make babies, especially when they find their college degrees aren't worth much. By the time they can afford children they're not as fertile as the were in their late teens and early twenties. You want babies? Gotta do something about it.
