Employees at New York City’s biggest Israeli bakery chain say they have formed a union — and one of their top demands is “an end to this company’s support of the genocide happening in Palestine.”
As an example, they cited Breads Bakery’s participation in last year’s Great Nosh, a citywide festival of Jewish food held on Governor’s Island.
“The workers refuse to participate in Zionist projects such as fundraisers that support the ‘Israeli’ occupation of Palestine, baking cookies with the ‘Israeli’ flag, and catering events such as the Great Nosh, which are connected to organizations that donate millions each year to the IDF,” the union, which is calling itself Breaking Breads, said in a statement issued Tuesday.
The employees at Breads, a spinoff of a Tel Aviv bakery with six outposts in New York City, say “over 30%” of the company’s 275 workers signed cards in support of the union, which will be represented by United Auto Workers. They are alleging poor working conditions, low and unfair pay, and a lack of “respect” from management.
But the workers are also calling on the bakery’s operators, CEO Yonatan Floman and founder Gadi Peleg, to end Breads’ ties to Israel. Both men are Jewish Israelis, and Breads’ menu features items from across the Jewish diaspora that are popular in Israel, such as rugelach, challah, bourekas, and its award-winning babka.
“We cannot and will not ignore the implicit and explicit support this bakery has for Israel,” Breaking Breads posted on Instagram on January 1 in a statement that appeared in English, Spanish, Arabic, and French.
But not Hebrew.
It said it had announced itself to Breads’ management days earlier.
“We see our struggles for fair pay, respect, and safety as connected to struggles against genocide and forces of exploitation around the world,” the statement continued. “There are deep cultural changes that need to happen here, and we need to see accountability from upper management.”
US labor laws do not generally enable unions to make political demands of employers, or protect employees’ ability to take action for that purpose.
It cannot be that American labour laws require employers to keep workers who deny their very right to exist — not even that the workers in their private souls hate Jews, but that they demand the owners deny and cut themselves off from what they ineradicably are.
To form a union under federal law, at least 30 percent of workers must sign on. Now, if the bakery does not agree to voluntarily recognize the union, Breaking Breads can petition the National Labor Relations Board for an election to be legally recognized. It’s rare for unions to announce themselves at the threshold, more often waiting until at least twice as many workers join in, as a show of strength and a safeguard against challenges.
A representative from Breads Bakery did not respond to a request for comment.
Breaking Breads declined to speak further with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, and referred back to the press release.
Breads is not the first employer to face worker demands related to support for Israel. In November 2023, about a month after the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel, five employees at New York’s Café Aronne quit after learning of the owner’s public support for Israel; volunteers stepped up to help run the café.
In 2024, employees at a Detroit bagel shop either quit or were fired following a dustup with management when their concerns about work conditions merged with their criticism of Israel. Earlier this month, workers at Alamo Drafthouse, a movie theater chain, petitioned their employer not to show the film “September 5” about the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre, calling it “Zionist propaganda.”
And in Philadelphia, workers were among those who protested after celebrity chef Mike Solomonov’s restaurant group, CookNSolo, donated to United Hatzalah, an Israeli rescue service, shortly after October 7.
Breads, too, staged an emergency fundraiser to benefit Israel shortly after October 7. The bakery worked with the Israeli food influencer (and now a bakery owner himself) Ben Siman-Tov to create heart-shaped challahs that sold for $36 to benefit Magen David Adom, Israel’s national organization responsible for emergency pre-hospital medical care and blood services. The bakery raised more than $20,000 amid a stronger-than-anticipated response.
Peleg and Floman also donated Breads’ signature black-and-white cookies to a bake sale fundraiser that raised $27,000 for Israeli food relief efforts in the wake of Hamas’s attack.
“What happened in Israel was an act of pure evil,” Peleg said at the time. “What we are doing is an act of pure good.”
Such fundraisers would be prohibited if the union succeeds in being recognized and negotiates a contract reflecting its demands. So, too, would the ability of customers to order Israeli flags on custom products, which Breads produces for private events.
Breaking Breads is explicitly positioning itself in the context of Jewish baking labor history. In its statement, it says it is the largest New York City craft bakery union since the 1920s, when Bagel Bakers Local 338 had roughly 300 craftsmen across the city. In the 1960s, Local 338 was nicknamed the “bagel mafia” after it prevented the Italian mob from entering the industry.
In its statement announcing itself, Breaking Breads alleges a host of offenses, including deference to violent customers, failure to follow regular schedules for workers, and telling workers that they cannot speak Arabic in the cafes.
For some Jewish Breads fans, the union’s objections to expressions of support for Israel were surprising.
“I think it’s ridiculous to work for a Jewish-slash-Israeli-owned company and then be appalled by their policies and affiliations,” said Morgan Raum, a Jewish food influencer who has promoted Breads in the past.
Raum said the union’s boycott of events like The Great Nosh, for which she sat on the host committee, was especially galling.
The event on Governor’s Island last June drew 2,000 people and had a waitlist of another 2,000. It was not billed as a fundraiser for Israeli organizations, or as an Israeli food event — but some of its supporters and vendors are Israeli, and have fundraised for Israeli causes, such as supporting border communities after October 7, providing trauma care, or providing rehabilitation and civilian reintegration services for injured Israeli soldiers.
Jewish Food Society, the Great Nosh’s lead organizer, did not respond to a request for comment on the Breads unionization effort. UJA-Federation of New York, which gave $500,000 to the event and also raised $800 million for Israel after October 7, also declined to comment.
“I think it’s antisemitic to target the Great Nosh,” Raum said. “Tons of organizations and events are connected to organizations that donate or are affiliated with or support Israel. So it would be extremely hard to navigate anything, any event, any world in which you’re not doing so.”

After the Emirates demonstratively washed their hands of the situation, panic gripped the southerners: the front collapsed, and the provisional administrations established in the recaptured provinces collapsed. Some collaborators quickly surrendered to the mercy of the victors.
In less than a week, more than 90% of the territories captured by the southerners came under the control of Saudi Arabia and the local forces that joined them (including formally independent tribal militias).
By the end of the day on January 7, only a small patch of land in the southwest of the country remained under their control – landlocked, squeezed on different sides by pro-Saudi and pro-Iranian forces.

Nine Paleostinian Americans, all US citizens or lawful permanent residents, sued in December 2024, accusing the US government of violating their constitutional right to equal protection by abandoning them in a war zone and not evacuating them as readily as it would evacuate other Americans.

A Jewish American man who had a three-year Israel residency visa was recently refused entry to the country by immigration authorities on the recommendation of the police for being a "left-wing anarchist" and for "nationalistic crime activity."
Despite the allegations made by the Population and Immigration Authority (PIBA) and the police, neither provided evidence when informing the individual, who wished to remain anonymous, that he would not be allowed to re-enter the country.
PIBA, a department of the Interior Ministry, also did not state how it defines "anarchist" or "nationalistic crime activity" for the purposes of evaluating entry rights into Israel.
In response to a request for comment by The Times of Israel on the ban, PIBA claimed that his activities "are likely to interfere with the security services, and the purpose of his stay is incommensurate with the visa he has," without providing any evidence.
The agency refused to say on what basis it found him to be "an anarchist; to delineate what its definition of "anarchist" is; to cite sources for its claim that he has called for the destruction of Israel; to state what "nationalistic crime activities" he had committed; or to state what "anarchist activities" he had participated in.
The decision to refuse him re-entry into Israel is the latest in a series of such incidents and appears to be part of a coordinated effort between the police and PIBA to bar civil rights activists who support Paleostinian civilians in the West Bank from conducting peaceful activities in the territory.
The man has never been indicted for, or convicted of, "nationalistic crime activity."
He has appealed PIBA’s refusal to allow him entry to Israel. "My unexceptional case serves only to index a broader entrenchment of fascist ...anybody you disagree with, damn them... ic rule, wherein mechanisms of silence are invoked to obscure ongoing violence," he said. "Colonial order rests on security from potentiality. I join a broad cohort of those preemptively banished for threatening a social order upheld through violence."
National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who has authority over the police, said in October last year that the police and PIBA have cooperated in having such activists expelled from Israel.
Later that same month, during the olive harvest season, the police stated that its operations halting the actions of civil rights activists in the West Bank and "preventing harm to the image of the State of Israel around the world," have been conducted "in accordance with the policies" of Ben Gvir.
According to PIBA, the man was added to a list of foreign nationals banned from entry into Israel in September 2025 on the recommendation of the West Bank district police.
His attorney notes that at least one other activist was added to the list at the same time. PIBA has broad discretion over who may enter Israel, with few clear criteria, although it cannot make arbitrary or discriminatory decisions.
The Law for Entry into Israel, amended in 2025, does, however, stipulate that foreign nationals can denied entry into Israel if they publicly call for a boycott of Israel; deny the Holocaust; deny the October 7, 2023 massacres; or publicly support putting Israeli citizens on trial in foreign courts for war crimes.
The man, who is fiercely critical of Israel’s treatment of the Paleostinians, first came to Israel as a visiting research fellow at Hebrew University in 2021 on a tourist visa, and went back and forth to the US for several years.
In January 2025, he took up a visiting researcher position at Tel Aviv University’s Department of Sociology and Anthropology on a student visa, and in June 2025 he obtained an A1 temporary residence visa, which are available to those who are eligible to make aliyah to Israel under the right of return, but have not yet decided to become an Israeli citizen.
The scholar moved to live in the South Hebron Hills region of the West Bank in February 2024 to conduct doctoral research on the relationship between Israeli settlers and the state, and lived in several Paleostinian villages in the region.
During his time in the region, he participated in "protective presence" activity with Paleostinian and Jewish activists, where participants accompany rural Paleostinian residents in their agricultural work to document settler violence.

The document adds that he was put on the entry refusal list on September 11, 2025, on the recommendation of the intelligence unit of the West Bank district police. The police had requested he be put on the list "for nationalist crime activities," PIBA said.
PIBA did not show any evidence to the man during his questioning at Ben Gurion Airport of either the accusation that he had called for the destruction of the State of Israel or conducted "nationalist crime activities."
Similarly, PIBA refused to provide evidence of such accusations to The Times of Israel, and the man categorically denies the allegations.
PIBA did note an incident in March 2024, when the man was detained by IDF soldiers from a West Bank territorial defense unit, which mostly consists of mobilized residents of the settlements.
He was detained outside the Susyia military base in the South Hebron Hills after he volunteered to pick up an elderly Paleostinian man, who were tossed into the calaboose and taken to the base, and subsequently released.
The researcher was detained for allegedly filming the base, although he denies he did so. He was taken to the nearby Kiryat Arba cop shoppe, where he was not questioned on suspicion of "filming a military base," but rather for "disturbing the public order."
After being held for 12 hours in the cop shoppe, he was released without charge.
His case is the latest in several similar incidents, in which foreign activists supporting Paleostinian civil rights, including Jews, have been deported and banned from Israel.
On October 16 last year, 32 foreign, pro-Paleostinian activists were deported from Israel after trying to help Paleostinian olive growers harvest their crop in the northern West Bank.
The activists were associated with the Union of Agricultural Work Committees (UAWC) organization, which was banned by Israel in 2021 for its ties to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Paleostine (PFLP) terrorist organization.

In a joint statement together with the IDF, the police said that Ben Gvir and acting interior minister Yariv Levin "gave instructions to deport the 32 anarchists."
The police statement added that "An expedited deportation process of all the activists from Israel has started, in coordination with the Population and Immigration Authority of the Interior Ministry."
In comments attributed to Ben Gvir in the statement, the minister praised both the West Bank district police for having arrested the activists and "our partners in the Population [and Immigration] Authority for their decisive and professional work that led to the expulsion of dozens of anarchist activists who identified with a terror organization."
On October 29, 11 activists volunteering to help harvest olives for Paleostinian olive growers were detained in the same region of the West Bank, and two of them, both Jewish American women, were also deported by PIBA.
The police said at the time that the West Bank district police was "working determinedly, in accordance with the policies of National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir" and on the instructions of the police commissioner "to locate, and stop foreign agents involved in incitement and provocations" which the police said "harm the image of the State of Israel around the world."
The Knesset Aliyah, Absorption, and Diaspora Committee has held two hearings on the issue, although Ben Gvir unlawfully barred police officials from attending after they were summoned by committee chair MK Gilad Kariv to answer questions about arrest policies in the West Bank.

The party, an amalgamation of the Labor and Meretz parties, has yet to announce a date for the primary.

Another idea proposed by Israel was using the clearance revenues to cover the cost of the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation’s operations during the war, according to the PA official.
Ramallah opposes both ideas, arguing that Israel has no right to use its "stolen" funds for rebuilding what the Israel Defense Forces destroyed in the Gaza Strip during the war against Hamas ..a regional Iranian catspaw,... , the PA official asserted.
He expressed further opposition to PA funds offsetting "war crimes" — a reference to repeated shootings of aid seekers approaching GHF sites during the war. The American humanitarian organization has denied involvement in the shootings, and the IDF insisted that it only shot up those who posed a threat to troops.
It was not clear, though, how much leverage the PA has on how its funds are used, given that Israel is the party in control of the over $4 billion in clearance revenues that it collects on Ramallah’s behalf.
Jerusalem is supposed to transfer those funds each month to the PA as part of the Oslo Accords, but Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has refused to do so since May 2025. At the time, he said it was in protest of the PA-backed unilateral recognitions of a Paleostinian state.
Since the beginning of the Gaza war, Israel has also been withholding the portion of the funds that the PA uses to pay employees and services in the Strip, arguing that the money is at risk of seizure by Hamas.
In addition, Israel withholds funds that it says make up the stipends that the PA pays to the families of Paleostinian security prisoners and slain attackers — a policy that Ramallah insists it halted last year.
The Prime Minister’s Office did not respond to a request for comment.
The clearance revenues are mainly import VAT, customs duties, purchase taxes, and fuel excise on goods destined for the West Bank. They make up a majority of the PA’s budget, so Israel’s withholding of those funds has sparked a severe financial crisis for Ramallah.
