#9  In the Wind and the Lion, the Brian Keith version of Teddy Roosevelt was delightful, and fairly authentic. " America wants Pedecaris alive or Raisuli dead"... line among my favorite.
The other was "Gentlemen, nothing in this world is certain - absolutely nothing. The fate of the nation will be decided by the American people in November, and the fate of Morocco will be decided tomorrow, by me. And now, if you don't mind, I'd just like to be alone with my bear!"

Sadly, those days when American citizenship was a prized and widely respected status are long gone.

#10  As long as I've been reading Rantburg, since shortly after 9/11, this site has carried articles about war, violence, pogroms and all kinds of instability in Sudan. I've gotten the impression that Sudan might actually be more dangerous than Afghanistan. So, is it oil or what? Why would American citizens go there? Especially, why would American citizens go there when they can pretty much assume that Biden will not send the cavalry to their rescue?

#12  Why would American citizens go there?

Soldiers have families and kids
Contract maint and operations loggie techs have families and kids
Logistic warehouses have operation staff w/kids
Kids have schoolteachers and bus drivers
Families get groceries, buy clothes, go to American movies, church services
Churches have priests
Groceries get delivered
Kids get sick
Sick kids go to clinics
Clinics have American trained nurses, doctors
Starbucks, Pizza Hut, Subway, KFC... offer employment to American dependents as do the military for administrative, clerical roles.

Quite often mini/micro communities are built to provide for civilian augmentees.

[As referenced by TW in her experience] non-military commercial interests are also represented in these communities.

Those are likely the 16,000+.

Another thought: How many of those Americans are dual-citizen something? Not necessarily Sudanese, but members of that floating expat society that staffs all sorts of projects, and may or maynot have deliberately acquired American citizenship along the way like many of the Afghan-Americans who returned home when things were “civilized”, then got caught in the reconquest? Similar intent to the many Lebanese-X who wanted an escape card when the time came, and all the Mainland Chinese who sent their wives to give birth in California or bought Canadian citizenship against future need.

Africa Horn
Fog o’War: Is Sudan's Omar al-Bashir free or in prison?
[Garowe] As the war in Sudan enters the fourth week, it is not clear if deposed leader Omar al-Bashir
...Former President-for-Life of Sudan He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself head cheese. He fell out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. Sudan's potential prosperity has been pissed away in warfare that has left as many as 400,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced. He was overthrown by popular consent in 2019. Omar has been indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court but nothing is expected to come of it...
is still held in prison or was freed, with one of the groups fighting claiming to have released him while another one insisting that he is still under custody within a "secure" location in Khartoum.

In 2019, al-Bashir, who was in charge of Sudan for three decades, was ousted from power following a civilian uprising that was backed by the military. By the time he was tossed, he was being sought by the International Criminal Court [ICC] over war crimes in the fragile Darfur state.

Ironically, the Rapid Support Forces [RSF] and the Sudan Armed Forces [SAF] who had jointly backed the civilian uprising, are now locked horns over the control of the country with both parties claiming victory. Over the weekend, the two groups battled near the base where al-Bashir is being held.

Military officials told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named that Bashir, as well as Abdel-Rahim Muhammad Hussein and Ahmed Haroun — who both held senior security positions during the Darfur crisis — had been moved to a military-run medical facility in Khartoum under tight security for their own safety.

Later on, the army accused RSF of wearing military uniforms before raiding the prison and freeing inmates. The RSF, led by Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, denied the allegations.
No, no! Certainly not!
and claimed that the military "forcibly evacuated" the facility as part of a plan to restore al-Bashir to power.

Haroun, a former official also wanted by the ICC, claimed that he had been freed from prison according to Sudan Television. According to him, they left prison because of fierce fighting and lack of food and water which are supposed to be provided by the government.

Haroun also said he was ready to appear in front of the judiciary whenever it was functioning and would take responsibility for his own protection. It was not immediately clear if Bashir, who has spent extended periods in a military hospital, was with him, Rooters reported.

For the last two weeks, the two groups have been fighting over the control of the capital Khartoum but on Monday, they all agreed to a 72-hour ceasefire to allow humanitarian assistance within the country. The ceasefire is also meant to allow several foreign nationals to leave at their will without coercion.

Kober prison held a number of screeching muppets detained after the coup. One of them who walked free, Ahmed al-Fatih, said he was willing to surrender at a cop shoppe but could not find any that were functioning amid the unrest, according to a statement released by his defense lawyers. Both screeching muppets said their lives were in danger at the prison as food and water ran low.

Al-Bashir created the powerful RSF in 2013 years after the Darfur war in which the group, formerly known as Janjaweed, was accused of killing thousands of people. After he was removed from power, al-Bashir was charged with several crimes in the country and would be imprisoned and he was found guilty.

Rapid Support Forces stormed five prisons, released inmates: Sudan's Interior Ministry

[AlAhram] Sudan's Interior Ministry accused on Wednesday the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of storming five prisons and releasing inmates from 21 to 24 April. The ministry added in a statement that the RSF stormed Kober Prison, resulting in the deaths and injuries of several prison administration employees, and released all inmates from the prison.

Late on Tuesday, Ahmed Harun, a top aide of former president Omar al-Bashir

, claimed that together with other members of al-Bashir regime he had beat feet from Kober Prison. al-Bashir had also been held in the same prison, but the army confirmed on Wednesday that the 79-year-old had already been transferred to a hospital before the fighting erupted on 15 April.

"Members of al-Bashir's regime, including al-Bashir himself, had been moved to military-run Aliyaa Hospital due to their health conditions... and remain in the hospital under the guard of the judicial police," the army said in a statement.

Harun claimed in a recorded address to the Sudanese television that he and other tossed in the slammer
Please don't kill me!
regime members had remained in detention at Kober for nine days, even after the jail was emptied of both guards and prisoners. He added that they had taken responsibility for their protection in another location.

The escape of leading figures from the ousted regime of al-Bashir, at least one of whom is wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur, has raised fears the conflict may take a turn for the worse.

Meanwhile,
...back at the wrecked scow, a single surviver held tightly to the smashed prow...
the Sudanese army confirmed that the RSF continue to violate the truce declared on 25 April by launching random artillery shelling on areas in the vicinity of the General Command building and the strategic facilities administration.

"Snipers have also been reported to be shooting in areas surrounding Khartoum Airport, the residential airport neighbourhood, and areas in Bahri and Omdurman," the Sudanese army said in a statement.

It also accused "the rebels" of stationing themselves inside residential areas to use residents as human shields.

"The theft of a large number of food distribution vehicles is another violation of the ceasefire. This action endangers citizens' property and makes them military targets," the army added.

The Grand Turk
Turkey arrests pro-Kurdish party’s parliamentary candidate
[Rudaw] Ottoman Turkish police on Wednesday arrested a parliamentary candidate of the pro-Kurdish Green Left Party for alleged links to Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Istanbul.

Ayten Donmez, who is running for The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
’s parliamentary elections on the ticket of the newly-established Green Left Party in Kocaeli province, was arrested in her house in Istanbul on Wednesday, for charges that include "membership in a military terrorist group" and "breaking the law regarding prevention of financing terrorism," according to the state-owned Anadolu Agency.

The pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) is fielding its candidates under the Green Left Party as the former is facing a closure case at the Ottoman Turkish constitutional court.

Both parties are yet to comment on the arrest.

The state media posted pictures of Donmez, wearing traditional Kurdish clothes with someone who is believed to be a member of PKK, in a mountainous background. The location and the time of the photos are unknown.

The independent news outlet, Bianet, reported that the candidate's arrest is part of a wider investigation into the activities of the pro-Kurdish party in Kurdish area.

Ottoman Turkish officials have accused the HDP of being the political wing of the PKK for years, and Ottoman Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu claimed on Tuesday for the first time that the new pro-Kurdish party is affiliated to the PKK as well.

HDP has denied any links to the PKK but it has said that the party respects the ideology of the group’s incarcerated
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
leader Abdullah Ocalan.

This is not the first time that Kurdish politicians in Turkey have been accused of having links to the PKK for their photos with alleged members of the PKK.

In January last year, Ottoman Turkish media published photographs of HDP politician Semra Guzel with a PKK fighter. She was accused of being a member of the group. The politician confirmed the photographs, saying she and the fighter were college colleagues and later got engaged, adding that the pictures were taken during the short-lived grinding of the peace processor between the PKK and Turkey in 2013.

She was arrested in September same year in Istanbul after going into hiding for months.

PKK is a Kurdish gang struggling for the increased rights of Kurds in Turkey. Ankara considers it a terrorist organization.

Ottoman Turkish police arrested at least 110 pro-Kurdish lawyers, journalists, screeching muppets and politicians, including a bigwig of the HDP, on Tuesday for alleged links to the PKK ahead of parliamentary and presidential elections.

Green Left Party is founded upon instructions from PKK: Turkish interior minister

[Rudaw] In a televised interview on Tuesday, the Ottoman Turkish interior minister slammed the Green Left Party (Yesil Sol) for having ties to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), hours after Ottoman Turkish police arrested over 100 pro-Kurdish journalists, politicians and self-proclaimed geniuss for alleged ties to the group.

Ottoman Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu, appeared as a guest on a program of the pro-government 24 TV, where he talked about the Green Left Party’s ties to the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP).

"The Green Left Party is founded after instructions from Qandil itself, in order to be an alternative party to HDP," he said. He referred to the Qandil mountains in the neighboring Kurdistan Region where PKK bases are located. The area has also been subjected to sporadic bombing by Ottoman Turkish forces.

The comments from the Ottoman Turkish minister came hours after Ottoman Turkish police arrested at least 128 people for alleged ties with the PKK, which Ankara considers a terrorist group.

"If we look at the candidate lists of the said party, includes turbans from the mountain [Qandil]," said Soylu, implying that the candidates of the Green Left were former PKK Lions of Islam who want to become members of the parliament.

However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
in order for a party to be established in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
, it requires approval from the ministry of interior, as well as a signature from the minister himself.

HDP is a pro-Kurdish leftist party that includes members of different backgrounds in Turkey. They mainly advocate for Kurdish rights, and the rights of the ethnic, religious and other minorities in the country.

HDP’s stance as opposition has attracted the ire of the Justice and Development Party (AKP)-led government, being subjected to several raids and arrests in the past few days. HDP’s former co-chairs Selahattin Demirtas and Figen Yuksekdag have been jugged
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
since 2016 for alleged terror crimes.

However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
HDP itself is facing the threat of being closed down as the Ottoman Turkish prosecutor’s office filed a case against the party at the Ottoman Turkish constitutional court for its alleged ties to the PKK. HDP refused to have a defense in the hearing of the case on April 11.

HDP will contest the elections as the Green Left Party, and they are viewed as the decisive factor in the elections. The party also expressed implicit support for the opposition presidential candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu to unseat current President His Enormity, Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
...Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey. In Anatolia did Recep Bey a stately Presidential Palace decree, that has 1100 rooms. That's 968 more than in the White House, 400 more than in Versailles, and 325 more than Buckingham Palace, so you know who's really more important...

Key Hezbollah financier, a ‘global terrorist,’ faces charges in New York
[IsraelTimes] Mohammad Bazzi extradited from Romania, arraigned in federal court for alleged financial fraud and conspiracy; Sherlocks say he funneled millions to Lebanese terror group

An alleged financier for the Hezbollah terrorist organization was arraigned in a federal court in New York City on Wednesday.

Mohammad Bazzi has been accused of funneling millions of dollars to the Lebanese terror group. The US Justice Department branded him a "key financier" of the organization.

He was arrested in Romania and indicted on US charges in February, and extradited to the US on Tuesday.

The US Treasury in 2018 classified Bazzi as a "specially designated global terrorist" for assisting in, sponsoring, and providing financial, material, and technological support and financial services to Hezbollah, the US Attorney’s Office said.

The US had offered a $10 million reward for information about his whereabouts.

Bazzi, 58, has been indicted on three counts related to conspiring to finance a terrorist group, and money laundering conspiracy. Each count carries up to 20 years in prison.

He allegedly provided Hezbollah with millions of dollars he made through business activities in Belgium, Leb

The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozeen flavors of Christians. It is the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
, Iraq and West Africa. Bazzi is a citizen of Lebanon and Belgium. It wasn’t clear why he traveled to Romania before his arrest.

Bazzi and another defendant in the case, Talal Chahine, allegedly first began a scheme in 2007 that involved using a restaurant chain in Michigan to conceal their assets.

Bazzi was designated as a terror supporter in 2018 and blocked from accessing his US assets or doing business with American entities.

He and Chahine then allegedly conspired to force someone in the US to liquidate real estate assets connected to the restaurant chain and covertly transfer the funds to Lebanon to evade the sanctions.

The defendants allegedly discussed concealing the transaction from US authorities in several ways, including by making fake purchases of restaurant equipment from a Chinese company, inventing a fictitious loan to family in Kuwait, faking a real estate deal in Beirut, or creating a fake franchise agreement for opening a Lebanese restaurant chain in the US.

In 2019, Bazzi and Chahine decided to fraudulently transfer around $860,000 to Lebanon for the fictitious restaurant chain, according to the indictment.

The defendants kept up communications about the illegal transactions with individuals in the US through the start of this year, Sherlocks said.

US law enforcement officials said Bazzi and Chahine were caught in recorded conversations proposing different methods to conceal the illegal transactions from US authorities.

The case is being handled in New York’s federal Eastern District Court. Some of Bazzi and Chahine’s communications and correspondence went through the court’s jurisdiction.

Romanian law enforcement took Bazzi into custody in February after he arrived in Bucharest.

Man who provided ‘shelter’ to Poonch attackers for two months detained

As a first substantial breakthrough in the Poonch ambush probe, security forces zeroed-in on a man, who allegedly provided ’shelter’ and ’support’ to the bully boyz for at-least two months before they carried out April 20 attack that claimed the lives of five soldiers.

Meanwhile,
...back at the shootout, Butch shot Black Bart's knife out of his hand......
the search operation to track down the ultras entered the sixth day.

Sources told news agency—Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
News Observer (KNO), that following leads and cross checking the statements of 50 detainees in the case, forces zeroed-in on one Nasir, a local, for his involvement in sheltering and supporting the bully boyz for more than two months, before executing the ambush in Tota Gali, Bhata Dhurian in Bhimbir Gali Secto, Mender Poonch.

Army Commander Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi visited the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch and took stock of the ongoing operation, the officials said, adding he asked the troops to be relentless in their pursuit. This was Army commander’s second visit in the region in less than a week.

Five Army personnel were killed, and another was maimed after their vehicle was attacked by bully boyz in Poonch last Thursday.

A massive search and cordon operation was launched after the attack and it has now spread to 12 areas across the twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri.

Sources claimed that after sustained questioning and cross checking the statements a local, Nasir confessed his involvement and told Sherlocks that he sheltered the bully boyz at his house for more than two months and "provided them logistic and material support."

"Some of the detainees were let off after questioning," they said.

Special Forces are also engaged in the search operation, the sources said, adding the agencies are backed by drones, sniffer dogs and metal detectors.

A large spread of forest areas, deep gorges, natural caves and dense growths have been searched and the operation is now covering other places, they said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the shootout, Butch shot Black Bart's knife out of his hand......
a balloon from across the border was noticed in Jhalas area of Poonch, they said.

Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi took stock of the search operation which entered its sixth day on Wednesday.

"He interacted with the troops deployed in remote areas and exhorted them to be innovative and relentless in their pursuit," the northern command tweeted.

This was the second visit of the army commander to the border districts within five days. Earlier on April 22, Lt Gen Dwivedi had visited the attack site at Bhata Dhurian, a notorious infiltration route for bully boyz from across the Line of Control because of its topography, dense forest cover and natural caves. Sources had earlier said seven to eight bully boyz spread in two groups are believed have engineered the attack.

According to initial investigation, the bully boyz reportedly hid themselves in a culvert on the road from where they launched the attack on the truck which was carrying fruits, vegetables and other items to Sangiote village from the Bhimber Gali camp for Iftar to be organised by the Rashtriya Rifles.

Over 50 bullet marks were spotted on the vehicle that shows intensity of the firing by terrorists, the sources said.

The troops involved in the operation are exercising utmost caution as the bully boyz may have planted improvised bombs (IEDs) in the densely forested area with deep gorges and caves, they added.

The slain soldiers were from a Rashtriya Rifles unit deployed for counter-terror operations.

Experts from various agencies including the National Security Guard (NSG) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) have visited the site of the attack, the officials said.

They said a sniper is believed to have targeted the vehicle from the front before his associates showered bullets and lobbed grenades on the vehicle from opposite sides, apparently giving the troops no time to retaliate.

"The bully boyz used steel coated bullets that can penetrate an armoured shield," they said adding, "Before fleeing, the bully boyz stole the soldiers’ arms and ammunition."

Turkey's artillery, warplanes strike PKK sites in the north of the Kurdistan region

The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
's warplanes reportedly bombed sites of the anti-Ankara Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in the north of the Kurdistan region's governorate of Duhok on Wednesday.

A source told Shafaq News Agency that "the Ottoman Turkish offensive primarily targeted the vicinity of the Skeiri village on the slopes of the mount Matin in the Amadiyah district, which lies in the northern reaches of Dohuk."

It was not immediately clear what damages or casualties have resulted from the attack, the source said.

There has been a long-running Ottoman Turkish campaign in Iraq and Syria against bandidos holy warriors of the PKK and the Syrian Kurdish People's Defense Units (YPG) militia, which are both designated as terrorist groups by Ankara.

Turkey regularly carries out air strikes into northern Iraq and has sent commandos to support its offensives.

In April, the Ottoman Turkish foreign ministry summoned the Iraqi charge d'affaires after Baghdad accused Ankara of violating its illusory sovereignty and called on it to withdraw its forces from Iraqi territory.

Iran seizes US-bound oil tanker in international waters
[NY Post] Iran’s navy seized an oil tanker as it traversed international waters in the Gulf of Oman, the US announced Thursday, the fifth such incident in recent years.

The US Navy’s 5th Fleet identified the captured vessel as the Marshall Islands-flagged Advantage Sweet, which issued a distress call during the incident.

The Navy statement made no mention of the tanker’s destination, but data from MarineTraffic.com showed it in the Gulf of Oman just north of Oman’s capital, Muscat, on Thursday afternoon local time.

It had just come from Kuwait and its destination was listed as Houston, Texas.

"Iran’s actions are contrary to international law and disruptive to regional security and stability," the 5th Fleet said. "The Iranian government should immediately release the oil tanker.

"Iran’s continued harassment of vessels and interference with navigational rights in regional waters are a threat to maritime security and the global economy," the Navy statement added.

"In the past two years, Iran has unlawfully seized at least five commercial vessels sailing in the Middle East."

Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency said the seizure came after an “unknown ship collided with an Iranian vessel last night in the Persian Gulf, causing several Iranian crew members to go missing and get injured.” It did not identify the other ship involved in the alleged collision.

Iran has made allegations in other seizures that later fell apart as it became clear that Tehran was trying to leverage the capture as a chip to negotiate with foreign nations.

The vessel’s manager, a Turkish firm called Advantage Tankers, issued a statement acknowledging the Advantage Sweet was “being escorted by the Iranian navy to a port on the basis of an international dispute.”

The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
