Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief April 12, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • TALIBAN-RESISTANCE CLASH IN PARWAN – Taliban forces launched a raid on a suspected National Resistance Front safe house Parwan Province. Other sources said the raid occurred in the Shatel District of Panjshir Province. The raid was carried out at night and 8 NRF fighters were killed in the melee that lasted several hours. Among the dead were Akmal Amiri and Nasir Ahmad Andrabi, both of whom were Commanders in the NRF. Commander Amiri’s loss was, particularly disheartening as he was considered an extremely capable leader and had a long history of battling ISIS and the Taliban. It is not clear how many casualties the Taliban incurred during the raid. The operation was surprising for the way it was carried out. Typically, operational security has not been a hallmark of the Taliban forces and this operation appears to have achieved complete and total surprise. If future operations adhere to similar operating principles, the NRF and other Resistance forces could be in for a long Summer.

  • PAKISTAN’S DEFENSE MINISTER CALLS OUT THE TALIBAN FOR SHELTERING TTP, AGAIN – Khawaja Asif has not been bashful about stating the facts as he sees them. In a recent interview with the Voice of America, he reaffirmed earlier statements that the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) continues to use Afghanistan as a base from which to launch attacks. Historically, the Taliban respond to these claims by 1) denying that terrorist organizations operate in Afghanistan and 2) they make behind-closed-door pledges to deal with the problem. There is some evidence the Afghanistan Taliban have turned a blind eye to Pakistani terrorism operations in Afghanistan in the recent past. Some have even opined the Taliban may have provided crucial intelligence to Pakistan that is thought to have resulted in the murders of 2 prominent TTP Commanders in Eastern Afghanistan earlier this year. With the massive anti-terrorism campaign that was recently launched across Pakistan, it was only a matter of time before Pakistan began calling out the Taliban for their perceived inaction in dealing with the TTP.

  • TALIBAN LEADERS HEARING MIXED MESSAGES FROM THE UN – UNAMA and the United Nations as a whole are threatening to suspend aid to Afghanistan over the Taliban’s decision to enforce the December 2022 decree that bans women from working for humanitarian aid groups. The UN has ordered its staff to ‘work from home’ while it decides what to do but has continued to threaten the Taliban with a serious cut or total ban on humanitarian aid unless it reverses its policies. Sources in Kandahar say the ruling clique is not inclined to take these threats seriously and they point to recent calls made by the UN for donors to contribute more funds for aid programs in the country. The source said the consensus among the Mullahs in the Supreme Leader’s inner circle is that the UN is simply making empty threats. The source said that a call from leaders in Kabul to hold a meeting to discuss a potential halt of aid was denied by Kandahar. Leaders in Kabul are apparently furious over the lack of attention to the problem and that there is a sense that Kandahar is disconnected from reality because it doesn’t have to actually govern while Kabul must deal with the shortages in resources on a daily basis.

CONFLICT TRACKER
Parwan/Panjshir: Taliban forces conducted a night raid on an NRF safe house in either Parwan or Panjshir (location is not clear yet). 8 NRF fighters were killed in the battle. It is not clear how many others nay have been killed or wounded in the fray. A revered Resistance commander, Akmal Amiri, was among the NRF losses.

Tunisian Football Club Suspends Activities After 32 Players Illegally Migrate To Europe
[SAHARAREPORTERS] A Tunisian football club has suspended activities after 32 of its players illegally emigrated to Europe.

The fourth-division Ghardimaou club's president Jamil Meftahi blamed "clandestine emigration".

"We've halted activities and suspended our matches," Meftahi told AFP on Tuesday.

Over the past three years, 32 of the club's players have emigrated to Europe, he said.

Tunisia is in the grip of a long, worsening economic crisis that has pushed many of its citizens to take desperate measures in search of better lives abroad.

According to Meftahi, Ghardimaou players, aged between 17 and 22, "either left by sea or went via Serbia then illegally crossed the border into other countries".

Until last November, Tunisians were able to travel to Serbia without a visa, giving thousands of people an alternative to potentially deadly boat crossings in the Central Mediterranean, the world's deadliest migration route.

Those heading for the exit have disproportionately come from marginalised areas such as Ghardimaou, an inland rural district near the Algerian border but far from Tunisia's coastal economic hubs.

Meftahi blamed players' "lack of financial means" for their departures.

"We can't afford equipment, shirts or shoes, and the players aren't being paid," he said.

Parts of the Tunisian coast are within 90 miles (150 kilometres) of the Italian island of Lampedusa, and thousands of people — Tunisians and citizens of sub-Saharan African countries — alike have attempted the crossing already this year.

Terrorists Attack Nigerian Capital, Abuja Community, Kidnap Traditional Ruler, 13 Others
[SAHARAREPORTERS] Terrorists, locally known as bandidos, have kidnapped the traditional chief of Chida community in Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, John Kwayidami, and 13 residents of the community.

The button men who stormed the community last Thursday shot an 18-year-old boy named Solomon in the leg while attempting to flee.

Ishaya Musa, a Chida resident, said the kidnappers, armed with AK-47 rifles, stormed the community around 11:34pm, Daily Trust reports.

He claimed the kidnappers went to the chief's palace and kidnapped him before abducting 13 other people from their homes.

"Unfortunately, a young boy who, out of fear, as a result of the sporadic gunshots, tried to escape was shot on the leg by the kidnappers, and he is currently at the hospital receiving treatment," he said.

According to him, some of the victims were asleep outside their compounds due to excessive heat when the kidnappers invaded and surrounded the community.

Musa said contact was established on Saturday evening when the leader of the kidnappers called the families of the victims.

Forfeited Drug-linked $460,000 Decision Was Against Accounts In Tinubu's Name
[SAHARAREPORTERS] Nigerian ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC) has admitted that its candidate and ’President-elect’, Bola Tinubu, forfeited the sum of $460,000 to the United States government in 1993 following a drug trafficking allegation.

This was stated in a court document filed by the party before the presidential electoral tribunal in response to a petition filed by the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, who is seeking the annulment of Tinubu's victory in the February 25 election.

SaharaReporters exclusively reported in September 2008 how Tinubu was involved in a white heroin trafficking network which operated in reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
...home of Al Capone, the Chicago Black Sox, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel...
and some parts of Indiana, led by one Adegboyega Mueez Akande between 1988 and 1993.

The source of the white heroine was identified as one Mr. Lee Andrew Edwards who was incarcerated for attempting to murder a federal agent while the agent was executing a search warrant on him.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Armenian and Azeri soldiers clash near contested region, seven killed
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] South Caucasus rivals Armenia and Azerbaijan on Tuesday accused each other of opening fire around the contested Nagorno-Karabakh region in a clash that killed a total of seven soldiers.

The two neighbors - both formerly part of the Soviet Union - have fought repeatedly over the last 35 years for control of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan but home to a mainly ethnic Armenian population.

The Azeri defense ministry said three troops had died in a clash close to the contested Lachin Corridor, a key road into Nagorno-Karabakh from Armenia that crosses through Azeri territory. The Armenian defense ministry said four of its soldiers had died and another six had been maimed.

Yerevan had earlier accused Azerbaijan of opening fire on Armenian troops performing engineering work near the village of Tegh in Armenia’s southern Syunik province. It said its forces had taken "countermeasures," without providing details.

Tegh is the last village on the Lachin Corridor in Armenia before it enters Azeri territory.

Baku said its troops came under "intense fire" from Armenian troops stationed in Syunik province.

Russia dispatched a thousands-strong peacekeeping contingent to the region in 2020 as part of a deal to end weeks of fighting that killed thousands and saw Azerbaijan make significant territorial gains.

Moscow is an ally of Armenia through a mutual self-defense pact, but also strives for good relations with Baku. The latest stand-off has been seen as a key test of Moscow’s ongoing influence in the region as it wages its own war in Ukraine.

The latest stand-off is over control of the Lachin Corridor - the only road route linking Armenia to Nagorno-Karabakh.

Azerbaijanis claiming to be environmental protesters have been blocking the route since the end of last year, resulting in what Armenia calls a humanitarian crisis.

Baku denies those claims, saying essential supplies can get into the territory and has defended the protesters as rallying against legitimate environmental concerns. Yerevan calls them government-backed agitators.

AKP announces parliament candidate involved in attack on Syria's Afrin
[NPASYRIA] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) announced its list of candidates for the Ottoman Turkish parliament, which included a candidate from the southeastern state of Sirnak, who had participated in the attack on the Afrin region, northwest Syria.

The Kurdish news agency Mezopotamya reported that Arslan Tatar, one of the gunnies close to the Ottoman Turkish government who actively participated in the attack on Afrin at the beginning of 2018, is nominated by the AKP to run for parliamentary elections, representing Sirnak.

Ottoman Turkish parliamentary and presidential elections are scheduled to take place on May14. Analysts see them as "fateful" for Ottoman Turkish President His Enormity, Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
...Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey. In Anatolia did Recep Bey a stately Presidential Palace decree, that has 1100 rooms. That's 968 more than in the White House, 400 more than in Versailles, and 325 more than Buckingham Palace, so you know who's really more important...
.

According to the report, Tatar was a member of Turkey’s extreme Nationalist Movement Party. He later joined the ruling party and is the right-hand man of the Ottoman Turkish Interior Minister Suleiman Soylu.

Tatar participated in establishing Ottoman Turkish military posts and stations in Kurdish mountainous areas and cutting down trees. He owns mineral extraction projects in southeastern Turkey, according to the report.

The Ottoman Turkish candidate, Tatar, is the son of Mehmet Tatar who was close to Tansu Ciller, Turkey’s Prime Minister in the nineties.

At the time, the so-called "unsolved murders" emerged in Turkey, mostly targeting Kurdish figures, referring to his father’s involvement in those crimes.

Arslan Tatar supported the attack on Afrin in several media statements. At the time he said he would deploy armed military groups under his direct management, according to the report.

[NPASYRIA] Canadian authorities arrested two Canadian women who were repatriated from a camp for Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. (ISIS) family members in northeast Syria and they are expected to appear in a Brampton, Ont., court on Tuesday, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said.

The RCMP reported that the women are scheduled to appear for a bail hearing.

However,
ars longa, vita brevis...
the Mounties seek a terrorism peace bond against them under the Criminal Code.

On April 6, the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) handed over four women and ten children of ISIS families to a Canadian delegation.

This came in a meeting between bigwigs from the Canadian Foreign Ministry and the Foreign Relations Department of the AANES.

On Friday, another woman of the repatriated Canadian citizens was released on bail in Edmonton, pending a terrorism peace bond application.

A terrorism peace bond allows a court to order a person to enter into an agreement to keep the peace and be of good behavior or risk a prison sentence.

[Dawn] An intelligence-based operation in Quetta turned deadly in the early hours of Tuesday, with at least four coppers losing their lives in a gunbattle with terrorists, according to the police.

Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations) in Quetta Capt (retd) Zuhaib Moshin told Dawn.com that the operation was launched to neutralise bandidos hard boyz who had been involved in past attacks on security forces in Kuchlak.

Mine explosion kills two in Halabja province
[Rudaw] Two people were killed in Halabja province’s Tawella town on Tuesday after a mine went kaboom!, according to local officials.

Aso Kawis and Gashtyar Sharif were in Tawella, along the Kurdistan Region's border with Iran, collecting seasonal plants when a mine went kaboom!, according to Biyare district's mayor Hamid Baram.

Kawis died immediately, and Sharif followed shortly after in the hospital after succumbing to the injuries he had sustained.

A police source told Rudaw that the earth-shattering kaboom took place after the two men touched a mortar.

"The two people went to a contaminated area where the signs of hazardous areas are present," the mayor told Rudaw.

The area is known for being contaminated with remnant mines from during the eight-year-long war between Iran

3 Uzbek turbans blamed for fatal stabbing during escape from Indonesian jail; within hours 2 recaptured, 1 drowned
I think this is the last time we heard about this bunch of palookas.
[BenarNews] Three suspected Uzbek Death Eaters allegedly fatally stabbed an officer and injured four others when they escaped an immigration detention center in Jakarta before being hunted down, police said on Tuesday.

The trio, allegedly affiliated with al-Qaeda, escaped Monday, with two of them captured later in the day. The third suspect drowned in a Jakarta canal, also on Monday, while being pursued by police, according to Aswin Siregar, a front man for the police counterterrorism unit Densus 88.

"They incapacitated and attacked the officers using a kitchen knife or whatever they could get from the pantry," Aswin said at a news conference.

Officers found the two surviving suspects hiding in a vacant lot near the immigration office, Aswin said.

Police are investigating the case as a murder and a terrorist act, Aswin said, adding that officers seized a knife used in the attack and an autopsy was conducted on the victim.

The trio was among four Uzbek nationals detained by counterterrorism officers on March 24, Aswin said. Police said they had tracked down the suspects after receiving information from Uzbek authorities that they were spreading propaganda and recruiting followers on social media.

The fourth suspect, who did not join the escape attempt, remained in jug.

Aswin said the suspects had tried to flee because they did not want to be sent back to Uzbekistan.

"They did not want to be deported to their home country because they would face heavier punishments there," he said.

The police said the Uzbek suspects — whom they identified only by their initials - had entered Indonesia through Malaysia in February.

Aswin said the suspects were part of Khatiba Tawhid Wal Jihad, a bad boy group added in 2022 to the sanction list of the United Nations
...aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society...
Security Council for its links to al-Qaeda.

The group is a splinter faction of the Uzbek-led bad boy organization Jannat Oshiklari, which operates under the umbrella of al-Nusra

The group has about 500 fighters and operates in the Syrian provinces of Hama, Idlib and Ladhiqiyah, where it cooperates with other terrorist groups such as Khatiba Imam al-Bukhari and the Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Group, according to the U.N.

The sanctions imposed by the Security Council include a travel ban, an assets freeze and an arms embargo.

Police said two of the suspects previously traveled to Syria and joined a bad boy training camp there.

When they were arrested in March, police seized several items including passports, money receipts, iPads, cellphones and screenshots of their online posts.

(ISIS) claimed on Monday two operations; one against the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the other against the Iraqi army.

The ISIS-run Amaq news agency said the group’s bully boyz shot to death a fighter of the SDF, using machine guns, in the town of Jadeed Bakkarah, east of Deir ez-Zor.

However,

the SDF yet to comment on the incident.

On April 9, ISIS claimed an attack on a checkpoint of the SDF at the entrance of the town of Darnaj, east of Deir ez-Zor.

In Iraq, the group said its fighters managed to detonate an IED with a 4×4 vehicle in al-Mas neighborhood in Kirkuk city, vandalizing it and injuring those on board.

Although the SDF launches intensive security operations, the countryside of Deir ez-Zor has recently witnessed an increase in killing incidents carried out against SDF fighters, employees of the Autonomous Administration, tribal figures and civil residents.
