Iraqis rally to support protest leader for prime minister |
2020-02-17 |
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Hundreds of Iraqis rallied Sunday to support a protest leader they want as prime minister instead of current premier-designate Mohammad Allawi, who they see as too close to the ruling class. Appointed on February 1, Allawi has pledged to announce his cabinet lineup within the week even as he faces ongoing protests against his nomination -- and a new contender. In the shrine city of Karbala, dozens of students erupted into the streets carrying photos of Alaa al-Rikaby, a pharmacist who has emerged as a prominent activist in the protest hotspot of Nasiriyah, further south. "We’re here to show our support for Alaa al-Rikaby, the candidate of the people!" said Seif al-Hasnawy, a 20-year-old student. Rikaby, who has a round face and closely-trimmed beard, began demonstrating in early October alongside others fed up with rampant corruption, lack of jobs and poor public services. He has since risen to local fame with a series of videos posted on Twitter to his tens of thousands of followers, discussing politics and a path forward for the otherwise leaderless anti-government movement. In one video last week, he asked protesters who gather at squares across the country to show whether they would back him for the post of prime minister, in a novel approach for a political nomination in Iraq. "If the people decide so, I’d accept," he said in his latest video on Thursday. "This post has no value as such for me. I don’t see it as a prize, but rather as a huge responsibility," said Rikaby, who has a tent pitched in central Nasiriyah targeted in a recent stun grenade attack. In Karbala, university student Hassan Qazwini told AFP: "We protesters have numerous demands, and one of them is an independent prime minister without ties to parties -- like Alaa al-Rikaby." Before Rikaby, Faeq al-Sheikh Ali, a liberal critic of the ruling class, also declared himself a candidate but has not received mass public or political backing. Allawi was nominated on February 1 as a consensus candidate among Iraq’s fractured political parties but has only been publicly endorsed by holy man Moqtada Sadr, who has a cult-like following across the country. California Shia imam: ISIS or Daesh 'is the production of Israeli Intelligence'
2017-08-24 | |
![]()
In a June 23 sermon, Dr. Sayed Moustafa al-Qazwini, founder and director of the Islamic Education Center of Orange County, spewed the conspiracy theory that Israel was responsible for propping up the Islamic State after he explained that the terrorist organization was "anti-Islamic." Al-Qazwini’s statements about Israel were delivered during a lecture he gave at the center titled, "Islamic Shari’ah Means Tolerance and Goodness to Others." The sermon was translated into English by The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI). "Most of you -- all of you -- know who established ISIS, Al Qaeda and all these terrorist organizations," al-Qazwini said. "You know very well. You know who paid for them, who financed them, who helped them, who purchased weapons for them, who even trained them, who protected them. You know that."

New US Islamic institute prioritizes outreach, education
2017-05-24 | |||||||
[IsraelTimes] Shiite leader wants to build bridges through interfaith outreach, via preachers who understand American culture.
"We’re sending a message to non-Moslem visitors and friends -- particularly our interfaith community and Christians," Imam Hassan Qazwini,
"We use the same benches you sat on. We’re using the same stage your pastor used to disseminate our message, which is not too different from your message," he added. "The gap that exists between us is not that huge." Qazwini said reaching out to Christians, Jews and others has never been more important, with a US president who has said Islam hates the US and polls finding most Americans holding negative views of the faith. He sees education and outreach as the primary missions of the Islamic Institute of America in the bankrupt, increasingly impoverished, reliably Democrat, Detroit ... ruled by Democrats since 1962. A city whose Golden Age included the Purple Gang... suburb of Dearborn Heights, which has one of the largest and oldest Arab-Moslem communities outside the Middle East. Qazwini, who comes from a family of prominent American Shiite scholars and is of Iraqi descent, said he hopes to quell fears and misunderstandings through regular interfaith gatherings and a media division that will produce short videos and other internet-based programming.
Liyakat Takim, a professor of global Islam at McMaster University in the Canadian city of Hamilton, Ontario, said the US has one or two Islamic educational institutions, but "none with the same vision" offered by Qazwini.
Takim said Qazwini is "a man of great vision," and delivering on his plans for the institute will be "an exceptional feat and a great challenge," given rising anti-Moslem sentiment. A Pew Research Center survey conducted in 2014 found Americans view Islam less favorably than other major religions and atheism. Another Pew survey found 38 percent of Americans think Islam is more likely than others to encourage violence among its followers, while 50 percent think it is not more likely. President Donald Trump ...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States... ’s campaign was marked by anti-Moslem rhetoric and, since being inaugurated, he’s sought to enact a travel ban from several Moslem-majority countries. Qazwini said perceptions of Islam are hurt by acts of violence or terror committed by people who call themselves Moslem. He criticizes the media for rushing to associate someone’s crime with his religion if that person is or appears to be Moslem. Just because somebody acts "in the name of religion," it "doesn’t mean the religion is acting," he said. Still, he can understand the fears. "If I put myself in a non-Moslem’s shoes, I fully understand how they feel," he said. "There’s a massive, massive bombardment of anti-Islamic literature, imagery that leads viewers and readers to believe Islam is not compatible with the 21st century. It is our job as Moslems to change that and to contribute. ... Maybe we can’t do it all, but at least we try." Qazwini said his institute seeks to educate Moslems and non-Moslems alike, and make them feel comfortable in each other’s company. "We’re not your enemy," he said.

Aussie Muslims accused of attacking American Muslims at the Haj |
2013-10-25 |
![]() The Detroit Free Press reported that one of the American Muslims was strangled until his face turned blue and that women in the group were threatened with rape, according to witnesses to the assault that they say took place on October 16. According to American Shiite cleric Mothafar al-Qazwini, the group was confronted by as many as 200 men they later learned to be Australian Salafis. Qazwini said one of the Australians asked one of the Americans if he was Shiite. "He responded 'yes'. He was immediately attacked by three men, one grabbing him in a choke hold, the others punching him in the face," Qazwini said. Qazwini alleged that after the initial attack some of the Salafis ran to the women's tents, telling them "if they do not leave in 15 minutes, they will rape them all." The American group was led by Mr Qazwini's uncle, Sayyid Hassan al-Qazwini, imam of the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, Michigan, the largest mosque in North America. An official from the center declined to comment on the alleged incident until the imam returns home later this week. But the Australian Muslims took to Facebook to deny the claims, saying that the American Shiites who started the trouble. One Australian Facebook post said "this is nonsense ... the incident happened in my camp ... the [Shiites] came insulting the sahaba [the companions of the Prophet Muhammad]. My tent was right by the tent of the [Shiite] guys who got beat up ... not (sic) it shouldn't have happened but the whole incident was instigated by them and no-one said anything near what is being claimed here." The post added, "BTW, the police were not laughing ... there is a lot of zulm [oppression] in KSA [the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia] including against [Shiites], but this story is just idiotic." |

Metro Detroit Shias say they were attacked by Salafis at hajj in Saudi Arabia |
2013-10-23 |
A group of metro Detroiters visiting Saudi Arabia for the hajj, the annual Muslim pilgrimage, said they were attacked and threatened with death last week by a group of Sunni men from Australia because they are Shias, a minority sect within Islam. One of the members of the group was strangled until his face turned blue and women in the group were threatened with rape, according to people who witnessed the attack last week. They allege that authorities in Saudi Arabia did not take their complaints seriously and deleted a video one of them had made of the incident. A U.S. State Department official told the Free Press on Monday: "We are concerned by reports that a group of U.S. citizens was attacked ... at a campsite for Hajj pilgrims located outside of Mecca. We take these reports seriously and are committed to the protection of U.S. citizens traveling and residing abroad." Time to launch a Crusade? Oh, never mind.... Maybe State can issue a sternly worded warning to would-be hajjis planning trips to SA, telling them the US will not be responsible, etc... While Shias from metro Detroit have reported being harassed before on hajj, last week's incident was much more extreme and frightening, members of the group told the Free Press. The Salafis asked one of the Shia men if he was Shia, recalled Seyed Mothafar Al-Qazwini, a nephew of Imam Al-Qazwini. "He responded 'yes.' He was immediately attacked by three men, one grabbing him in a choke hold, the others punching him in the face." Al-Qazwini said the leader of the Salafis then shouted "Kill them all. Kill the Shia." Suehaila Amen of Dearborn said the attackers also yelled "Kafir" at the Shias, an insult that means "infidel" or "non-Muslim." Some of the Sunnis then ran to the women's tents, telling them "if they do not leave in 15 minutes, they will rape them all," Al-Qazwini said. During the attack, the leader of the attackers referenced a 7th century battle in Karbala, Iraq, where a leader revered by Shias was killed along with many of his family members, said Al-Qazwini. The leader told the Shias, according to Al-Qazwini: "We will make this day like the day of Karbala. We will kill all your men and take your women as captives." And after that, take on the entire infidel world! Jihad! Derka Derka! |

Dearborn Imam Demands Government Enforcement of Sharia Censorship |
2012-09-17 |
![]() As anger flared across the Muslim world Friday over an anti-Islam video from the U.S., the religious leader of Michigan's largest mosque slammed Islamic extremists for attacking U.S. embassies and urged Muslims not to react violently to attacks on their prophet. And he urged the U.S. to do more to stop the people behind the video and those who are promoting it. "Somehow, they should be stopped," said Imam Hassan Al-Qazwini of the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn. "The U.S. response should be much more stronger than verbal condemnation." I.e. free speech should be suppressed forcefully. "This is not what Islam preaches," Al-Qazwini said of the fatal attacks. "There is no way we can tolerate killing." At the same time, he said we can't "sit and watch" as the anti-Islam video is promoted. "Silence, I kill you!" "We can do more to stop inciting violence," he said. Allowing the movie has "broader ramifications for our troops, diplomats and Americans abroad." One could interpret this as a threat... The filmmaker and those who support the movie, such as Quran-burning Pastor Terry Jones of Florida, "have blood on their hands," he said. So the government should neutralize these criminals. Speaking during Friday prayers -- the most popular gathering time of the week for Muslims -- Al-Qazwini said he was dismayed to see Islamic extremists take down the U.S. flag at an embassy and replace it with an Al-Qaida flag. "Al-Qaida is the last organization that speaks for Muslims," Al-Qazwini said. I actually believe he was dismayed. He's an islamofascist of the Shi'ite persuasion. Al-Qazwini told the congregation that Muslims "should not be quiet" when their prophet is attacked. Infidels however are to be seen, not heard. But "we cannot be violent" in responding, he said. If the government enforces their will they don't have to be violent. This is not just a random crackpot. Even though he's strongly linked to the Iranian theocracy (studied in Qom 1980-1992) he's politically connected. On October 1, 2003 he delivered the opening prayer for the 108th Congress. This guy is mainstream US Islam. |

Ron Paul Panders to Anti-Semitism in Michigan
2012-03-01 | |
Ron Paul, who has consistently engaged in anti-Semitic nonsense over the course of the past few decades, has largely attempted to hide his anti-Semitism throughout his campaign. No longer. Ron Paul has issued this Arabic-language flyer outside the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, Michigan:
And thats the point. Pauls appeal to the Muslim community is strictly and completely based on his opposition to Israel. Pauls anti-Semitism is well-documented; see his section on Zionism in Pauls book Liberty Defined (better titled All The Weird Things Ron Paul Believes). His CYA maneuver, stating that he wants to cut all foreign aid, then determine to whom American should restore aid, is just that a CYA maneuver. His real target is and always was Israel. I dont see Ron Paul supporters handing out Hebrew flyers at my synagogue proclaiming his desire to cut off aid to Egypt, Libya, and the Palestinian Authority. The Islamic Center of America, by the way, is a moderate establishment run by Imam Hassan Qazwini, who has refused Saudi funding for his mosque. Hes also hosted Louis Farrakhan, who according to Debbie Schlussel, took the time to call Jewish Americans forces of evil with a Satanic mentality, and according to Schlussel, has expressed support for terrorist groups including Hezbollah and Hamas. So its no surprise that Paul sees his parishioners as rich ground for recruits.

Senior US Shiite cleric accused of embezzlement
2010-07-26 | ||||||
[Al Arabiya Latest] A group of Muslim youths accused the United States most senior Shiite cleric Qazwini target=_blank>Hassan Qazwini of the embezzlement of Arab donations and called for the immediate return of the stolen money.
According to the statement, Qazwini collected donations from the Arab community in the United States and transferred them to his father's company in California. The statement called upon Qazwini to immediately return the money, estimated at $350,000, to the center and laid the blame on the center's Board of Trustees for the negligence that allowed Qazwini to get away with stealing the money.
Arab residents of Dearborn said they are not familiar with the group that signed the statement and attributed the accusation to internal disputes between Qazwini and members of the center's Board of Trustees. According to sources from the center, there have been attempts to remove Qazwini from his post, yet they all failed since he had the support of Shiite youths, also called The Youth Movement. Qazwini's popularity, sources added, is basically due to his ability to preach in English, in addition to Arabic, which is not the case with several Shiite clerics in the United States. This, naturally, increased the number of his supporters.
"I am going to submit all the documents that prove the falsity of these accusations," he told Arab-American press in Dearborn. As for transferring donations, Qazwinin admitted to sending an amount, a quarter of the sum mentioned in the statement, to orphans in the Iraqi city of Karbala and specifically to a charity organization run by his father.
"I gave a receipt to every single person who donated and all those receipts are registered."

BO meeting or Why did he rebut so quick on May 15? |
2008-05-19 |
On May 14 Barack Obama held a private meeting at Macomb Community College with Hassan Qazwini. What else happened on May 14? Could it be President Bush called out someone for talking with Terrorists? Qazwini is the leader of the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn. Debbie Schlussel describes Qazwini as Hezbollah's most important imam and agent in America. Yep there it it the old Hezbollah = terorist connection. The stench of BO.... Kind of explains why he reacted so fast. Obama's meeting with Qazwini came to light because of a brief report in the Detroit Free Press (with the photo above) deriving from Qazwini and his mosque. The Obama campaign has not itself posted any news account or press release regarding the meeting on its Obama News page. A Google News search on "Obama Qazwini" shows that news of the meeting has essentially remained a closely guarded secret. The Free Press account states that the two discussed the presidential election, the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the Iraq war, according to Qazwini. Schlussel asks why "this open anti-Semite and supporter of Israel's annihilation" was afforded the privilege of discussing "the Arab-Israeli conflict" in a private one-on-one meeting with Obama. Perhaps they were discussing what Obama referred to as the "legitimate claims" of Hamas and Hezbollah in his chat with David Brooks. Schlussel has followed Qazwini's career for the past 10 years, decrying President Bush's meetings with Qazwini during the 2000 presidential campaign as well as in connection with the formulation of his faith-based initiative. Schlussel reports: Qazwini is very open about his support for Palestinian homicide bombings, HAMAS, and Hezbollah. And he's a good friend of Hezbollah spiritual leader, Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah--the man who issued the fatwa to Hezbollah terrorists to murder over 300 U.S. Marines and U.S. Embassy civilians in cold blood. Qazwini's mosque has held rallies and celebrations in support of Hezbollah, and many of Hezbollah's biggest money-launderers and agents in America are his congregants. When I went undercover to his mosque in 1998, he and others welcomed Nation of Islam chief racist Louis Farrakhan as "our dear brother" and "a freedom fighter." Qazwini applauded Farrakhan's anti-Semitic statements saying that Jews were the "forces of Satan" and that there needed to be a "jihad" on the American people. Schlussel has more on her 1998 undercover visit to Qazwini's mosque at the time of Farrakhan's visit in her October 2001 post. Via Gateway Pundit (with thanks to Bill Otis for the heading). So, when BO responds to this with the obvious, note that President Bush did meet with the same character as part of his "Faith Based Initiatives". http://www.debbieschlussel.com/archives/2001/10/radical_islams_1.html |

Detroit Hajjis complain about Northwest Airlines treatment in Frankfurt
2007-01-17 | ||
DEARBORN -- About 40 Muslim Metro Detroiters say they were stranded at an airport in Frankfurt, Germany, and given a series of explanations about why they could not board their Northwest Airlines flight to Detroit Metropolitan Airport. A spokesman for Northwest said Tuesday that the travelers, who were returning from a pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, reported to the gate about 20 minutes before their connecting flight was to take off. They were barred from making the trip by airline and international flight rules, he said. But the Muslim travelers, including two imams, and their advocates -- the Council on American-Islamic Relations -- adamantly rejected the airline's statement at a press conference Tuesday, saying flight rules were at least the third reason given for why the pilgrims could not board the Jan. 7 flight. "We arrived at the gate at least an hour and 30 minutes before the departure," said Imam Sayed Hassan al-Qazwini of the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn. "Others who came after us were allowed to board the airplane." Qazwini and other travelers said airline staff in Frankfurt told them to stand to the side and offered no explanation for why they were not processed for boarding. Some of them had boarding passes. Then, they say, they were told by airline and airport officials that the flight was overbooked. Subsequently, they said, they were told that because their flight from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to Germany was a charter flight, their information for the flight to Metro Airport was not properly recorded in computers. Some of the travelers were left in the Frankfurt Airport for more than a day.
The airline released a statement saying, in part, "Northwest Airlines policy states that passengers must check in for international flights at least 60 minutes prior to departure and be on board the aircraft at least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time." But the travelers said Tuesday they can't believe the airline would offer the explanation now. Several said that after landing in Frankfurt at 7:30 a.m. for their 10:20 a.m. flight to Detroit Metro, they proceeded immediately to the departure gate to check-in. "We were told to stand to the side an hour and 55 minutes before the plane took off, after a 45-minute security check," said Jennifer Zreik, 29, of Dearborn. "We were in line before everyone else was." Qazwini said he hopes the airline will apologize and compensate the travelers affected by the delay. Without a resolution to the issue, Qazwini said he will consider contacting other Muslim groups to urge a boycott of Northwest. The travelers are considering legal action.
