Badakhshan Officials Say Yaftal-e Payin District Retaken After Overnight Attack

Police spokesperson Ehsanullah Kamgar said the attack occurred while several Taliban fighters and commanders were on leave. He said reinforcements returned within hours and restored control over the district.
Kamgar said Taliban authorities arrested seven people in connection with the incident and seized weapons and military equipment. He did not identify those detained or specify which gang was responsible for the attack.
Following the incident, Taliban army chief of staff Fasihuddin Fitrat traveled to Badakhshan and said security forces would take action against anyone attempting to destabilize the province.
Local residents said security measures were tightened in Yaftal-e Payin after Fitrat’s visit and alleged that some civilians were harassed during subsequent security operations.
Earlier on Friday, local sources said the Maihan Soldiers Front,
… Sepahian-e-Maihan (literally "soldiers of country"), which seems to have newly appeared in the landscape… an armed group, had briefly taken control of the district and raised its flag over government buildings. Badakhshan has witnessed periodic festivities between security forces and gangs since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021.
