My German grandfather, the one who’d been a gunnery sergeant and earnt an Iron Cross in WWI, had a devoted hunting dog who he discovered classified SS men with poachers the day two of them came to arrest him for being the most prominent Jew in Hildesheim — he was barely able to hold her back. So they went away with plans to come back the next day with a larger team. He and my grandmother escaped across the border into Holland that night.

Later the Nazis forbade Jewish ownership of guns, but they thought of Jews as city folk — it never occurred to them that there were Jews living in the countryside, too, doing all the same things their neighbours did.
