2 US Army prepares for mass casualties with drill digging graves amid a looming war threat

After crews dug a trench in an hour and 15 minutes, planners estimated that an engineering company with eight bulldozers and four military excavators could dig and fill enough trenches to bury up to 2,400 bodies a day, working around the clock.

The US Army said in a statement: 'The exercise served as a critical test of concept to validate the feasibility of battlefield temporary interment, an operational reality the US Army has not executed at scale since the Korean War.' Nearly 37,000 US personnel were killed in the war from 1950 to 1953.

3 Doesn't mean that it'll be US mass casualties. Even the bodies of hostiles would need to be interred to reduce the risk of disease and other unpleasant consequences of large numbers of decomposing bodies.

4 I read somewhere that dog tags come in pairs — one to take with the tally, one to leave on the corpse. Is that true?

At the beginning of the 1967 and 1973 wars Israel prepared for that kind of mass casualties among her civilians. They got them in 2023 in the communities near Gaza. It would have been much worse had not the civilians swarmed like ants from all over the country to drive out the attackers — recall that they had over 100% turnout for the Reserves call-up as Israelis flew in from abroad as well to report for duty, being handed weapons for the next unit being organized to go south regardless of their usual assignment.

5 In a sober thought of what if. If there were a disaster that took the lives of hundreds of people, how and who would handle it? Only the military has the capability of dealing with it. Sad, sober, but true that they should have an idea on how to handle it.

6 The US military is used to recovering casualties without delay (both wounded and deceased). I'm trying to wrap my head around what circumstances would prevent that from happening for an extended period of time - I mean, I'd presume you'd only bury troops if your couldn't recover them within 7-10 days (or less depending on the heat / humidity). But apparently you could manage to bring specialized teams with bulldozers into the area. That doesn't make sense to me. Likewise, if you can't get the dead out, can you evacuate the wounded? We have become relatively complacent expecting we will always be able to take advantage of "the golden hour." I understand you have to have exercises to practice everything, but this one just has some odd presumptions about it to me.
