BND chief warns Germany at risk of 'violent conflict' with Russia amid 'shadow war'
[TT] Germany is in danger of being drawn into a violent conflict with Russia, which now treats Berlin as a main adversary, the head of Germany's foreign intelligence service, the BND, warned lawmakers Monday.

"Germany is in danger of becoming embroiled in a violent conflict with Russia. The attempted attack in Leipzig is only one example of that," BND President Martin Jaeger told parliament's intelligence oversight committee.

"No other country currently poses such a direct, comprehensive and concrete threat to Germany," he added.

The warning, delivered at the intelligence chiefs' rare annual public hearing, comes as European governments accuse Moscow of an escalating hybrid campaign of sabotage, drone incursions and cyberattacks against Ukraine's backers.

Russia denies any intention of attacking NATO countries. # id) ?>

1 Is the idea creeping in that Trump isn't willing to risk immolating the US to protect you anymore? The only difference between Russia and Brussels is that the later apparatchiks wear better suits.

Interestingly, they don't consider their aid to Ukraine to be an act for war.

9 NATO has been marching eastward for 30 years despite James Baker's vow to not move "one inch" eastward after the break-up of the Warsaw Pact/USSR.

11 Historians (such as M. E. Sarotte) and eyewitnesses like James Baker himself later emphasized that the statement at the time referred strictly to East Germany’s special status in the context of German reunification and did not constitute a general ban on the accession of other sovereign Eastern European states. Furthermore there was never at any time a formal consensus or treaty prohibiting Eastern European countries from joining an alliance. As a matter of fact, Russia did not object to Eastern European countries joining NATO.

Russia signed the NATO-Russia Founding Act in 1997, where Moscow formally recognized the sovereign right of European states to choose their own security arrangements.

At the end of March 2004, seven new members, including the Baltic republics, formally joined the NATO ranks. A few days later, a smiling Vladimir Putin stood by the side of German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and proclaimed that Moscow’s relations with the transatlantic alliance were developing in a positive direction. "As to NATO enlargement, we have no concerns regarding the security of the Russian Federation".
