Great fun to watch when it happens in early childhood — as it does for the 20% of Americans who grow up with more than one language in the home, a very different process for primary school children, and a third process, much more laborious because it involves a different part of the brain, for secondary school students and adults. None of these things have anything to do with race or class, except that the poorer are more likely to have the advantage of more than one language in the home, while those better off are more likely to have formal foreign language classes at school later, when it’s harder to learn the thing. One of the many things, like character building, where the advantage is with the less monied, though their surroundings might be less overtly comfortable.

I imagine the good professoress knows nothing about this, having been reared not to be aware of such things, along with a stunning lack of manners.
