Canfield man pleads not guilty after Amy Acton fair incident

A 38-year-old Canfield man pleaded not guilty to multiple misdemeanor charges in a Mahoning County court days after he allegedly charged Ohio Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton at his city's fair, injuring two people.

Patrick Havas appeared virtually from jail at his Sept. 8 arraignment before Canfield Court Judge Molly Johnson. Havas pleaded not guilty to one count of misdemeanor disorderly conduct and three first-degree misdemeanors: two counts of assault and one count of inducing panic.

Attorney J. Gerald Ingram represents Havas. Prosecuting the case is Mahoning County Prosecutor Lynn Maro. Johnson issued Havas a $5,000 bond.

PROSECUTOR SAYS PATRICK HAVAS ATTENDED EVENT TO ASK QUESTIONS
Acton was campaigning Sept. 6 in Northeast Ohio and attended the packed Canfield Fair, located southwest of Youngstown.

Maro said the two victims appeared in the Mahoning County Democratic Party tent to hear Acton speak. She said Havas had hoped to ask Acton questions.

Law enforcement arrested Havas at around 2:30 p.m. after he allegedly charged through a crowd and knocked down the two elderly individuals, injuring them. Officers found him carrying two handguns, a Taser and brass knuckles, which he did not use, according to the Mahoning County Sheriff's Office.

Democratic candidate for Mahoning County auditor Dalton Bosze said Havas wore all black with a cap emblazoned with the words "respect" and "honor."

Bosze said Havas yelled out Acton's name, charged through the crowd and lunged for her. Bosze did not think Havas made contact with the gubernatorial candidate.

The judge granted a no-contact order to Havas for the two elderly victims and Acton, who Maro said was a victim because of the inducing panic charge.

WHAT EVIDENCE DOES LAW ENFORCEMENT HAVE?
Havas consented to a phone search, Maro explained after the arraignment in a brief news conference with news outlets. Law enforcement is still searching his cellphone, but she said a keyword search turned up no evidence of threats or an obsession with Acton on Havas' phone.

The only footage of the alleged incident is from Havas' phone, which Maro said showed he yelled out Acton's name and pushed his way through the crowd. That's when a member of Acton's security detail approached him.

"There is never any close contact near the (candidate) for governor," she said.

WHO IS PATRICK HAVAS?
Patrick M. Havas, 38, lives in Canfield, according to authorities.

Public records indicate he graduated from Stow-Munroe Falls High School in 2006. His Facebook profile states that he attended Youngstown State University and the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center, although it is unclear whether he earned a degree from Youngstown State.

IS PATRICK HAVAS RELATED TO ANDREW HAVAS?
Public records list Andrew James Havas as a possible household member and possible brother of Patrick Havas.

Andrew Havas resigned from a volunteer position with U.S. Sen. Jon Husted's campaign in July after reports surfaced about a prior conviction involving accusations of sexual misconduct with a minor. Husted's campaign said Andrew Havas did not disclose the conviction and was asked to resign after it became known.

The connection has drawn attention because Acton recently criticized Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy over campaign donations totaling more than $10,000 from Andrew Havas, according to a report.
