The **heat index** (HI) is a measure of how hot the air feels to the human body, combining **actual air temperature** with **relative humidity** to account for reduced sweat evaporation in moist conditions. Developed in 1979 by Robert G. Steadman, it estimates perceived temperature in **shaded areas** with light wind, noting that direct sunlight can increase the felt heat by up to **15°F**.

The **National Weather Service** classifies heat risk into four zones based on Fahrenheit values:
* **Caution (80–90°F):** Fatigue possible with prolonged exposure.
* **Extreme Caution (90–103°F):** Heat cramps and exhaustion possible.
* **Danger (103–124°F):** Heat exhaustion likely; heat stroke possible.
* **Extreme Danger (125°F+):** Heat stroke highly likely.

Current forecasts indicate dangerous conditions across the **Southeast** and **Texas**, with **Houston** and **Central Florida** (including **Walt Disney World**) experiencing heat indices between **108°F and 112°F**. **Northeast Florida** and **Southeast Georgia** are facing peak indices up to **115°F**, while **New York City** sees advisories for indices reaching **104°F**.
