3 The question is not whether the law is on the books, Glenmore, but whether the district attorney chooses to prosecute it — either the hate crime piece or the underlying crime at all. The other day that distinguished Moslem computer professor was sentenced to something like 18 months for storming up to that old Jewish Zionist with his buddies and smacking him so hard with his megaphone that the man died.

5 Even with honest and objective investigation, it is often hard to tell whether a crime is motivated by hate.

Also the number of hate crimes doesn't necessarily correspond proportionately with the number of victims. Suppose a person invades a synagogue during the sabbath service and viciously threatens people. That's just one crime but maybe hundreds of victims.

If the investigation is not honest, the data isn't worth much.
