4 I've worked with a few of their members in commemoration projects across different states and this really surprises me. The ones I've talked with have been extremely traditional women. That leaves me wondering if this wasn't part of some "planned takeover" composed of individuals joining the DAR solely to corrupt the institution. You certainly don't bump into them in the organization's more public and normal activities.

7 To be fair, one of my fellow PTA moms had been presented by her mother to the DAR at sixteen. She put up with it until she went off to college, then never went back. But she was a hippy California girl by nature and nurture, a master gardener specializing in regional native plants despite having worked the sales side of a Boston white shoe investment company until she married and settled down — which meant charming rich, older gentlemen over expensive expense account lunches into putting their money wherever the quants in the back office told her it should go that day.
