Arrest and Charges: Vander Meer was charged with murder and insurance fraud on June 23, 2026.

So 20 years ago the original (lamely done) investigation ruled her death an accident.

Despite noted issues like:

Youth Pastor Vander Meer was already suspected of an ongoing sex affair with an underage girl.

The planned hike was on a trail listed as 1 of the 6 most dangerous trials in the USA.
Plus he increased her Insurance Policy, from $150K to $600K just prior to the trip, that resulted in her death.

So after 20+ years, a new group of investigators were finally now putting 2 and 2 together?

The initial hold on details was stated to be Court sealed, awaiting his court approved extradition to Utah.

But being held as a known pedophile in jail does raise certain other possibilities.
