1 Magnitude 6.1 earthquake reported near Cuba, shaking felt as far as Florida

A 6.1 magnitude was detected west-northwest of Mantua, Cuba, with shaking reported as far north as Tallahassee.

The Gulf has historically experienced relatively few powerful earthquakes. Before this event, the strongest quakes recorded in the region were magnitudes 5.8 and 5.9, both in 2006.

Earthquakes exceeding magnitude 5 are uncommon in the Gulf, making a magnitude 6.1 tremor one of the strongest ever documented there and virtually unprecedented in the region's recorded history.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said it was the second largest on record.

Floridians shared their surprise online, with one X user posting: 'I just felt an earthquake in Florida… what in the world.'

Another said: 'Our office building shook and scared us. We thought it was a sinkhole.'

The shallow earthquake, which struck about 16 miles beneath the surface, was the strongest ever recorded near Florida, though officials said it posed no tsunami threat.

6 I didn't know until recently but our biosphere and these solar events have a relation in that magnetic storm electrons help form molecular isotopes that do not normally form, for example Beryllium-10, which plants use.

It's cool b/c you can then use beryllium-10 accumulation in soil as a proxy for these types of solar events. What is scary is that the Carrigan Event spike is relatively low, and it takes an event ten times the size to register a huge spike, and there's been a few.

7 I don't think the solar electrons do much isotope formation by themselves. Both they and the solar protons are typically rather low energy. But if you change the atmosphere profile substantially you can get more cosmic ray showers happening lower, and the high energy particles from those do sometimes interact with nuclei.
