1 Washington, D.C., February 5, 2026— Today the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for Ivomec (ivermectin) injectable solution against New World screwworm (NWS). The agency has concluded that based on the scientific evidence available, it is reasonable to believe that Ivomec may be effective for the prevention of infestations caused by NWS larvae (myiasis) in cattle when administered within 24 hours of birth, at the time of castration, or when a wound appears, and the known and potential benefits of the product outweigh its known and potential risks. Ivermectin also protects against heartworm and mites and a bunch of other diseases in animals.

In humans, it protects against head lice, roundworms and a bunch of other diseases.

Potential use in preventing cancer in humans also although that is preliminary.

5 Ivermectin is an antiparasitic medication.After its discovery in 1975, its first uses were in veterinary medicine to prevent and treat heartworm and acariasis. Approved for human use in 1987, it is used to treat infestations including head lice, scabies, river blindness, strongyloidiasis, trichuriasis, ascariasis and lymphatic filariasis.
