3 Two reasons I can think of.

1. If the blades have a high rotational speed, they tend to be somewhat invisible like a conventional prop.

2. Most ducted fan propulsion has the blades completely within the shroud. This one doesn't. Combine that with near invisibility and accidents happen.

Bad design. Extend the shroud and see if it still meets operational criteria.
