12 There is a button, Pic-a-Nic, which is, as far as anyone can tell, SUPPOSED to be used to change your "nym", whatever that is.

Precisely right, my dear, but that’s not website security. It’s just the option to accept an anonymous identifier or type in your own. In the old days we were Anonymous0001, Anonymous0002, Anonymous9996, etc, until we chose a permanent identifier, whether a nickname/nym or a proper name. Then Fred wrote a little bit of code that picked one randomly from a lengthy and silly column A and another randomly from an equally lengthy and silly column B to attach to the anonymous numeric identifier, and here you are: Uninens Thromonter9996.

Website security is handled at the back end, Fred having been in the programming biz after he retired from being an intelligence analyst for the Army. badanov has been building websites even longer than Fred, and the two of them have been having fun improving it over the years. DDOS attacks and suchlike rarely make it across the threshold anymore, and nobody has ever stolen information about our posters — so we’re doing much better than most sites. But because Rantburg doesn’t make people log in or share financial information, there is no data base of sellable information for bad guys to steal.
