Couldn't swim, aye. Couldnt vs Cant. I suggest that latter. Now I know why the whole thing felt off and the way it did.

Double-checking myself: No, you do not need to know how to swim to join the U.S. Army. While water survival training exists, basic swimming proficiency is not a strict entry requirement for most Army roles, and you will not be disqualified for not knowing how to swim.
