I like how Trump is making this a group project. Skin in the game, baby. And it highlights the crux of the problem: Are you willing to let global trade be gated by the whims of a band of desert warlords? If not, what are you going to do about it?

Some random EU minister was whinging "If the mighty US Navy cannot handle the problem, what can us pitiful Europeans do?" (I'm paraphrasing. And it might have been Spain)
This is both wussified and untrue. Some EU countries have aircraft carriers. If you have a carrier, you also have destroyers and frigates for air defense. Otherwise, you will not have a carrier for long when push comes to shove. So send a frigate or two, at least for show. The Straits could use a bit more air defense nowadays.

3 I think Trump is mostly making the point that most of the European countries are unwilling to use their militaries for things that definitely affect their countries and in many cases they aren't able to do anything because they are under funding their military spending.
